All of us atPerkins Schoolfor the Blind are pleased to
share with you another
successful year.
Message from the Chairman and the President
The Perkins School for the Blind 2002 Annual Report documents the close of aneventful year and provides a moment for us to reflect on our accomplishments and to prepare for the challenges ahead. Perkins continues to help 40,000 people inMassachusetts, New England and around the globe lead rich and independent lives in the face of physical obstacles. Our dedicated teachers and professional staff workwith courage, wisdom and passion. They never stop learning, growing and giving. It is because of this remarkable spirit and dedication that our aspirations become areality. Despite all of the wonderful strides we have made, this represents only a fraction of what we would like to accomplish.
The most significant event this past year was the retirement of Kevin J. Lessard whoserved Perkins for 35 years. Kevin’s career as teacher, counselor, and mentor preparedhim well for his 18 years as Director of the school. Kevin’s vision and energy haveenabled Perkins to strengthen our core campus programs in Massachusetts. His commitment to the worldwide community of people who are blind has enriched our educational outreach to students and teachers throughout the United States and overseas. Kevin’s many contributions to Perkins extend from creating our infant and toddler program, to initiating outreach programs for our elderly blind population, to the development of the Hilton/Perkins Program. These initiatives will be a constant reminder of Kevin’s leadership in shaping the mission of Perkinstoday and for the future.
We are grateful for the invaluable efforts of all who support Perkins in so many ways.Thank you for giving, sharing and working so effectively to ensure Perkins’ success.

Building Programs for Children in ChinaChina has the world’s largest blind population, but until recently had nopreschools for blind children and noschools at all for multi-handicapped blindchildren. After four years of planning withthe Hilton/Perkins Program, six schoolsfor the blind are now serving as modelsites for China’s first preschool. Theseschools are also hosting the first programsfor multihandicapped blind students. Perkins staff is working with Chineseagencies to open 60 additional programsthroughout the country.
Fine Arts Festival For an entire month at the Mall at Chestnut Hill, art by Perkinsstudents hung on museum-quality displays, their quilts were suspended from ceilings, and students gave musical concerts. PerkinsFine Arts Festival offered an unprecedentedopportunity for Perkins students to celebrate their talent and to share theiraccomplishments with such a large andappreciative general public.

www.Perkins.org Perkins new Web site opened to great success. Designed to accommodate Web userswho are blind, have low vision or aresighted, www.Perkins.org meets the Web Accessibility Initiative guidelinesand received accolades from trade maga-zines, The Boston Globe and the generalpublic. Over 3,000 users visit the site eachmonth, and Perkins is currently developingphase two, which will nearly double thecurrent content.
Training Future Leaders A partnershipbetween Perkins and the University ofMassachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) has created New England’s only graduateprogram for educators of people who areblind. Perkins staff helped develop the curriculum; students attend classes at theUMass Boston campus; and Perkins servesas a site for internships. Perkins andUMass Boston are developing a distance-learning component to address the direshortage of teachers, not just in the Bostonarea, but across New England.
Braille & Talking Book Library Authors’ BrunchPerkins hosted its first Authors’ Brunchfor patrons of Perkins Braille & TalkingBook Library and the general public.Three notable local authors, Robert Parker(Spenser and Jesse Stone novels), MichaelPalmer (nine New York Times best-sellingmedical thrillers) and Barbara Neely(Blanche White mysteries) spoke to thecrowd about the importance of readingfor everyone, including people who read braille and recorded books. Especially inthis time of decreased funding for ourlibrary, it was heartening to come togetherand recognize the importance of libraryservices for everyone.

“Monica is so proud of her work. She has learned what she can do, and I have learned what
she will be capable of in the future.” ~ Marcelia Garcia, mother of Monica,
a student in Perkins Deafblind Program
Independence means different things to different people. To some Perkins
graduates, it is attending college. To others, it is living in group homes and working
in supported work environments. On-the-job experience helps students at all levels
know the expectations of the workplace and understand that they can succeed,
whatever their next steps may be. At Perkins, in addition to the vocational
placements of students in the Deafblind and Secondary Programs, our Outreach
Program, which provides support services to Massachusetts kids in public schools
who are blind or have low vision, runs a summer employment program for
teenagers. Vision problems, as Perkins students and clients well know, do not need
to be obstacles to success in the world of work.

From a house without electricity in the African country of Chad to attending
Perkins School for the Blind, performing piano with the Cambridge Symphony
Orchestra and earning an honorable mention in the Concerto Competition for
High School Students from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Yegué’s journey is far
from typical. Yet his determination, accomplishments and the joy of his success are
similar to the successes that 185 Perkins on-campus students achieve daily.
Whether it’s a young child first learning that a raised bump on a piece of paper has
meaning that will grow into braille words, or a teenager recently arrived from
public school navigating a computer and the web through voice translation systems,
Perkins students in every program, every day, are reaching beyond expectations.
“I am learning everything. Not just the music. This is my first time with an orchestra so I’m learning how to find my way on stage as well.
I think blind people take more precautions than othersand prepare more thoroughly for everything.”
~ Yegué Badigué, graduating senior from Perkins Secondary Program

“Working with other teachers at Perkins has helped uswith knowledge and practical experience that we canbring to the community. We have a different visionand will be able to do more when we return home.”
~ Marilene Silva, a teacher from Brazil studying for a year in Perkins Educational Leadership Program
Teacher training is a cornerstone of strengthening services and bringing hope to
children who are deafblind in the developing world and has helped create a
brighter future for these underserved children. In 1989 when the Hilton/Perkins
Program was established, only four schools served deafblind children in all of Latin
America. Now there are 36 schools and agencies in 15 countries, four university
programs to educate teachers of deafblind children, and numerous parent groups
and professional associations. Perkins international success extends well beyond
Latin America. In sub-Sahara Africa, where there was one program for deafblind
children in 1989, there are now 27. In Central and Eastern Europe where 10 teachers
served 40 children, now over 60 teachers in 16 schools serve multitudes. In Poland
alone, 150 deafblind kids receive services. In Asia, our work has expanded to
39 sites in 7 countries, including national projects in China and the Philipines.

Despite State budget cuts, Perkins is determined to continue providing quality
services through Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library (BTBL) to the 17,000
people who do not have the luxury of patronizing a local library, bookstore or
newspaper stand. Perkins BTBL patrons themselves are similarly determined; they
contributed $35,000 to a recently established library fund. But the success story is
not over. More than weathering the budget storm, Perkins BTBL, which currently
serves only 10% of the eligible population, hopes to find ways to reach thousands
more people throughout New England who have no access to braille books or
unabridged books on tape. Reading connects people to the world. Perkins Braille
& Talking Book Library is doing all it can to keep that connection alive.
“I know from my work at Perkins Braille &Talking Book Library that many patrons are elders who are adjusting to losing their sight.
I understand firsthand when they tell me abouttheir fear of emptiness and isolation if they didn’t
have our library to help them read.”~ Anne Donna, Perkins graduate and Patron Services Specialist at
Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library

Perkins success is built on the foundation of people reaching out to others. In
1829, our founders championed the radical idea of educating people who are blind.
Today, thousands of thoughtful members of the public are continuing that tradition.
Some come to Perkins through volunteering. They help children in the
Infant/Toddler Program, while parents attend support groups. They help
Preschool students on field trips and Lower School kids in gym class. They read
textbooks to high school students and the mail to Perkins staff who are blind. They
build equipment in the Assistive Device Center and repair tape machines for
Perkins Braille & Talking Book Library. Other members of the public offer
job training to our students. A stunning 30,000 people contribute financially.
Their impact is immense. Perkins depends on the public and hopes you will
continue helping to bring independence, joy and success to so many. With your
help, there is so much more we can do.
“When I started volunteering, I couldn’t believeeverybody’s dedication. There is joy over every
child’s every change. This is so profound in a worldwhere the most vulnerable are often left behind.”
~ Ruth Reddington, one of the 40 volunteers in Perkins Infant/Toddler Program
