Progressing, sharing...Since our beginnings in caving, Petzls mission has remained constant: to design practicaltools that help people to operate in vertical and/or dark environments.
Ater the invention o the irst rope clamps by Fernand Petzl, the amily business began to
transpose caving tools to other vertical environments: irst to alpine activities, with climbingand mountaineering, then to proessional activities, with work at height and rescue in diicultlocations.
Each Petzl product is designed to meet a precise need ound in the proessional world.
For workers, reliability and quality o equipment are essential. Petzl creates solutions thatprovide simple, solid tools that are meant or intensive use. These solutions consist notonly o products, but also o an array o technical advice and inormation modules that areavailable through our communication resources and our distribution network. Part o thisinormation is also available at www.petzl.com
By its very nature, progression has no limits: we are constantly inventing new solutions, andthere is no reason for this to stop.

General principles or working at height
RestraintThis technique aims to keep the worker romentering a zone where there is a risk o alling(leash principle): lanyard + work positioningharness (the length o the lanyard is chosen tokeep the worker away rom a all hazard area).
Fall arrestThe all arrest system is designed to prevent therisks associated with a all:- Striking an obstacle or the ground- Excessive impact orce- Inert suspension: aggravates the personscondition
Reduce the distance required to arrest the fallYou must anticipate the required clearance. Thisclearance is the space required under the user sothat he doesnt hit any obstacles during a all (seediagram).Notes: Lanyards or energy absorbers should be no longerthan two meters the length of the fall should always be minimized The clearance required depends on the system youare using: lanyard, energy absorber, mobile all arrestdevice, reel...
Absorb the energy of the fall in order to limit theimpact transferred to the human bodyDuring a all, the worker should never be subjected toa orce greater than 6 kN. Two means are possible: Be sure that the lanyards always remain attached tothe anchor points, above the head, so that the length
o the all and the orce generated by the all areminimized if it is not possible to limit the fall, a shock absorbershould be used. The most common PPE (personalprotective equipment) with shock absorption areenergy absorbers
Maintain the victim in a position that limits theeffects of inert suspensionThe all arrest system is designed to minimize theeects o gravity on the human body during a all(reduces the orce o impact, avoids or reducesimpact against an obstacle). Despite this, theconsequences o a all are oten serious. Hangingimmobile in a harness, regardless o the model used, can cause serious physiological harm. This is not the
case when the hanging victim is conscious, as he isable to continually shit the pressure points o hisharness by himsel. In conclusion: Teams must beknowledgeable, trained and independent enough torescue an unconscious worker or a worker incapableo sel-rescue.

Fall factor and clearance
The all actor is the relationship between theheight o the all and the length o the rope orlanyard available or absorbing the energy o theall. It is calculated with the equation:
Fall actor =Length o all / length o rope or sling
Clearance is the minimum distance required toprevent the user rom striking the ground in caseo a all. The energy absorber limits the impactorce on the user. With a signiicant impact, theuser risks serious injury i he has no absorber. The system extends in order to absorb theenergy o the all. This elongation must be takeninto account when calculating clearance.(Example o clearance calculation page 73).
Mastering the techniques
To optimize saety and eiciency in workat height, great precision and excellenttechnique are required. These skills shouldbe acquired through speciic training andregular practice appropriate or each stageo the operation. Petzl recommends using
a specialized training organization or alltraining activities. The examples on theollowing pages illustrate some o thepractices used in the vertical world.

Rope access and confned spaces
Rope access
This progression technique is used when thereis no collective protection (railing, protectivenets, etc.) or when overhanging structures orworksites do not allow or mobile platorms, outdoorscaolding, etc. to be used. This is also the case or temporary operations whereit is not practical to set up collective protection. The work area is accessed with ropes by operatorsspecialized in rope access techniques. A site can beaccessed rom the top (saer and simpler to set up,this is the technique o choice), or rom below (orexample, a leader throws a rope up and around aixed point, and then climbs up the rope, or he usesmountaineering progression techniques). Once theleader has installed all the progression and saetyropes, the other workers can saely climb up theseropes.
Confined spaces
Work done in conined spaces carries speciicadditional diiculties related primarily to the lacko space and to the lack o means o autonomousprogression. Besides, the worker may face numerousadditional constraints: length o the intervention, air quality, temperature, etc. Since he cannot moveabout or ensure his own saety, someone workingin this type o environment must have assistance.Conined spaces are generally accessed rom the top.The workers saety is ensured by a reversible haulingsystem, which is independent and reliable, allowing a
quick evacuation in case o an accident.

When it is not possible or appropriate to use anexterior means (elevating platorm, ladder, etc.),the arborist uses a rope progression technique. To do this, he sets up a rope rom the ground and
installs an ascending system which is determinedby the coniguration and height o the tree. Oncethe arborist is in position, he must stay balancedand comortable (harness with attachment bridgeand adjustable lanyards). The work positioningsystem should always be backed up during a cuttingoperation.

Technicaltrainingisessential.
Hanging immobile in a harness, even or a short time, can cause seriousphysiological harm. In case o an accident, it is important to intervenequickly with the appropriate technique.
Self-rescue:On sites where the main access could be cut o by ire, people mustbe ready to evacuate the building quickly. They have evacuation kits. These kits are either portable or installed permanently on the structure.Where there is no identiied anchor possibility, these people can use ahook-based system. In both cases, teams are regularly trained so as notto panic in case o a ire.
On-site rescue:When a worksite is being set up, the company must establish a riskprevention plan (inventory o risk situations):1. It must protect the personnel rom alls rom height. The solutions, whether collective or individual, must protect the teammembers while they work.
2. In the case o an incident, the company must be prepared with rescuesystems or accessing, releasing and evacuating the victim. Thesesolutions are established with:- ready-to-use rescue kits, adaptable to many situations and simple touse- personal equipment or the worker at height (solution requiringexperienced and precisely trained teams)In both cases, the teams undergo regular training in order to be able tointervene rapidly in case o an accident.
Technical rescue:Technical rescue teams must be able to intervene rapidly in any situation. They must quickly assess the situation and know all the techniques orprogression and saety on a rope.- When access is diicult, these people must be able to intervene with
their own equipment. They have light, versatile equipment- When access is easier or possible by motorized means, they use morespeciic equipment
Ski lift evacuation:Operations evacuating ski lit users ollow an evacuation plan. Rescuekits are put together to respond exactly to the needs o each ski centre.
Access the victim
Accessing the victim can sometimes be complicated. Rope accesstechniques are used in such a case. When access is possible rom above, rescuers use rope descent techniques.I an access rope is in place, rescuers can ascend the rope using handledventral rope clamp techniques. In other situations, rescuers are obliged to
use climbing techniques to reach the victim.

Release the victim
HaulingThis involves using a mechanical advantage pulley system in order to easilyraise the victim. When the rescuer is alone, he will create such a system toconserve energy. The inconvenience is that a long rope is required. I thereare enough rescuers, a lower mechanical advantage is used to hasten the
operation.
Balancier techniqueThis is a counterweight system. The rescuer is on one side, the victim on theother. The rescuer unweights the rope on the victims side by pulling on it.The victim ascends and the rescuer descends. The advantage o this systemis that it is easy to do with little equipment. Engaging the counterweightis the step that demands the most energy. Ater that, it is important to becareful to keep the system under control. Be careful when there is a bigweight dierence between the rescuer and the victim.
Evacuate the victim
Downward, the evacuation is carried out with a descender. This is the easiesttechnique currently in use. When evacuation downward is impossible, thevictim is evacuated upward or horizontally.Upward, rescuers use either the counterweight or the hauling technique.Horizontally, several ropes are stretched taut. One rope is used or carriage,
another is used as a back-up belay, and another to move the litter.

EXO sel-evacuation
Following a tragic accident in 2004, the FireDepartment o New York (FDNY) wanted to equipeach ireighter with an individual system oprotection, allowing emergency sel-evacuation
rom a burning building. To do this, the FDNYconducted a very speciic study o their needs. Overorty technical solutions were proposed and morethan 5000 tests were carried out in their trainingcenters. During this study, the FDNY approachedPetzl to request the development o a device basedon the GRIGRI (descender/belayer) and to ine-tune anew emergency evacuation technique. The EXO wasthe result o this association o experts and is nowcarried by all o New Yorks ireighters. This systemallows each ireighter to quickly escape a burningbuilding, with a high level o saety.
EXO: personal escape system with anchorhook adapted or locations where thepossibility o inding an anchor point isuncertain. This solution applies particularlyto ireighter operations in a burning building(e.g. attachment to a window sill as a lastresort).

Technical rescue
Technical rescue teams intervene in particularlydiicult or dangerous situations. Intensively trainedand taught, they operate in any environment whereconventional rescue teams cannot intervene saely.
These specialists master all the techniques orprogression and belaying on ropes, including themore complex ones: evacuation downward, upward,or by Tyrolean traverse, etc.
Downward evacuation
Easier to install, this type o evacuation is avoredwhenever possible. Downward evacuation takesplace using gravity, applying dierent techniquesdetermined or speciic types o terrain.
Upward evacuation
Upward evacuation requires techniques which are
sometimes particularly complex (hauling with amechanical winch, creating a hauling system builtrom lightweight pulleys, using counterweighttechniques, etc.). Upward evacuation is a teameort and requires perect coordination by everyoneinvolved.
Evacuation by Tyrolean traverse
When evacuation o the victim is diicult (urbansites, industrial sites, conined spaces, canyons, etc.)or impossible due to the presence o an obstacle, victims can be evacuated via Tyrolean traverse. These complex systems can only be installed by
rescue workers who have been specially trainedto make suitable decisions about the choice otechniques (Tyrolean traverse set up with transportrope and back-up saety rope, cable-car system, special Tyrolean traverse or moving the victim in alldirections while adapting to the terrain, etc.).
A ALVEO VENT: lightweight and ventilatedhelmet or rescue with strong chin strap tolimit risk o the helmet coming o during a all.
B ULTRA: powerul headlamp.
C FALCON: lightweight seat harness orrescue.
D ID S: versatile sel-braking belay device/descender with integrated anti-panic unction
allows the speed o the descent to be easilycontrolled. Can also be used to make areversible haul system.
E MICRO TRAXION: ultra-light, ultra-compactprogress capture pulley that is exceptionallyeicient.
F ASCENSION: ergonomic handled ropeclamp (right- and let-handed versions) orrope ascents and hauling (pulling aid).
G PROGRESS: dynamic rope lanyard or ropeprogression.
H TRANSPORT 45L: durable large-capacitypack.

Ski lit evacuation
I ski lit equipment ails, the person in charge mustevacuate passengers according to the evacuationplan. This document explains precisely how all theoperations should be carried out and what human
and material means must be employed. In most cases, these operations are carried out bythe operating personnel. The maximum projectedtime allowed or evacuating all passengers is3.5 hours (rom breakdown to evacuation o the lastpassenger). This time can be reduced and adaptedto the situation according to the weather, the type oinstallation, etc.In case o diiculty, the operator may call inorganized rescue squads (mountain rescue, civilemergency services, etc.). Evacuation o a ski litrequires speciic techniques or movement along acable. For maximum eiciency, these operations areled simultaneously by several independent teams, generally composed o two people (one suspendedon the cable or evacuation, the other on theground to receive the passengers and to guide themovements o his colleague). The success o theseoperations hinges largely on the instruction, trainingand practice o the operating personnel (at least oncea year).

ComortOn harnesses or suspended work, comort is assured by wide waistbeltsand thicker oam in high pressure areas. The materials used (peroratedoam, thermoormed supports, etc.) assure good ventilation, optimal lightweight and excellent rigidity where required.
Attachment pointsThe ventral attachment point distributes the weight more evenly betweenthe waistbelt and the leg loops during suspended work. The lateral pointsdistribute the load on the waistbelt or suspended work with a supportingsurace or the eet. The dorsal and sternal points on ull body harnesses areused to connect all arrest systems.
Petzl makes several types o harnesses to respond speciically tothe dierent needs o workers at height. These products providemaximum eiciency and security or workers at height. They aresimple to use, comortable and technically adapted to the needs o
the tasks or which they are designed. Petzl also suggests variousaccessories that allow supplementary unctionality to be integratedinto the harness, as well as rescue equipment.
HARNESSES
AdjustmentsAll Petzl harnesses have adjustable waistbelts, leg loops, and shoulderstraps ,as applicable. Each adjustment point is equipped with DoubleBacksel-locking buckles. These do not require re-threading to be locked: the
harness adjusts easily in seconds. To acilitate donning while keeping theeet on the ground, or with large shoes, certain harnesses also have FASTautomatic buckles on the leg loops and waistbelt. Once adjusted, thesebuckles open and close easily and quickly - the harness can be put onwithout adjusting all the buckles.
