chapel or regular prayer times because of work or family. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Although the giving of the rosary by Mary to Saint Dominic in 1214 is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to his followers - with the 15 mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. In 2002, St. Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light. The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it “a compendium of the Gospel.” The main focus is on Jesus—His birth, life, death, and resurrection.

The Catholic School is a place where these mysteries are lived out on a daily basis. In the normal course of quizzes and tests, as well as the bigger events of triumph and tragedy. Time and again our Pius X Fam-

Dear Friends of Pius X High School,

The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, whose feast day is celebrated in a particular way on October 7th, but whose mantle of protection we turn to in all our needs. Pope Leo XIII wrote about the Rosary, “It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary.”

The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the monastics who would pray the 150 Psalms every day. Then there was a parallel practice of praying the Hail Mary 150 times throughout the day for those who were unable to make it to

ily has turned to our Blessed Mother to ask for her intercession and to guide us through turbulent waters and dark days. These days are no different; and every good coach will tell you: “If you don’t practice it during the week, you won’t be ready for it come game-time.”

The rosary appeals to many for one basic reason: it is simple. It is a school of prayer: the constant repe-tition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. It is a family: we sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. It keeps our minds and hearts on bigger things: we grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever.

Last year, across the Diocese, Bishop Conley launched a Rosary Crusade. To help spread the message, the committee he formed invited Father James Kelleher, of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (S.O.L.T.) to speak at a number of our schools, including Pius X. In his article announcing the start of this crusade, Bishop Conley said, “The rosary is a powerful weapon. It is a weapon against the scourge of evil that is in our world and wages war on our hearts. In her apparitions at Fatima, Mary exhorted us to pray the rosary for ourselves and the good of the entire world, and she promised many graces to those who pray it. Praying the rosary allows us to meditate on the life of Jesus as we reflect upon the mysteries of the rosary, but with the assistance of the intercession of His Most Holy Mother.”

But, in order to be ready when tough times come, we need to practice now. Maybe the rosary is a part of our regular routine, a constant comfort in our purse or pocket. Maybe we pull one out of our car con-sole just before walking into a funeral liturgy. Maybe we have one draped around the end of our pews at school that has yet to be held in hand. Wherever we are at in our prayer life, it is never too late to start to pray the rosary.

Student Council Update

Read for the Fun of It

We can all agree that reading for enjoyment is a positive and beneficial activity for young adults. Strong reading skills translate into better performance at school, better preparedness for careers and overall well-being. But how can we inspire students to read for enjoyment? The ques-tion is nearly as old as librarianship itself.

The first step in helping students establish a reading habit is to create an awareness of available reading materials and provide convenient access to items in the library. During the first few weeks of classes, 9th grade English classes were introduced to the holdings of the Pius X library, including books, periodicals and online resources. Students were encouraged to browse the collection, ask questions, make suggestions and use the library for their school work as well as for entertainment.

During Teen Read Week, October 7-13, I will be reaching out to all students and inviting them to visit the library to check out books. Pius X library will join thousands of

school libraries, classrooms, and bookstores across the country in celebrating Teen Read Week through programs and initiatives that call attention to books and the func-tion of the library within the school community. Students will be encouraged to participate in reading activities, make suggestions and ultimately become regular library users.

Even though we all understand the importance of read-ing, the demands of our students’ academic and social lives do not allow much time for leisure activities. Pre-cious free time can easily be filled with mindless, empty activities unless we can help students encounter reading as a fun way to relax. The cumulative effect of even a few minutes of recreational reading every day can make a sig-nificant difference in their academic success and personal well-being.

If the Pius X library can be a place for students to conve-niently access great books, and if they become aware of what the library has to offer, maybe students will make the choice to read!

Schools, parents, care-givers and communities all play a role in providing supportive pathways for our youth as they navigate childhood and adoles-cence. SCIP (School Community Intervention and Prevention) is partnering with Lincoln Public Schools, Bryan Independence Center and the Lancaster Prevention Coalition to put on a series of valuable presentations about how to support the health and well-being of our community’s youth. These events are open to parents, students, school professionals and community mem-bers. Save the Date: 6:30 p.m., November 13, 2018- The Impact of Stress & Anxiety on our Youth - Lincoln High School: The-atre.

• Personalize it: Each family member should have their own Ro-sary. Children may play with it. Girls may wear it as a necklace. Boys will try to use it as a lasso. That’s fine. It helps them become familiar with a Rosary. Eventually they will learn and grow in reverence as they imitate and internalize what is taking place.

• Create a habit: Set a time that is comfortable for your family and that works without adding stress. When it doesn’t happen, don’t give up entirely, just pick it up again the next time.

• Start small: Be patient. Don’t try to complete an entire Rosary the first time you gather together in prayer, particularly if you have young children. Start with a decade and build over time.

• Keep it simple: The Rosary is a great way for young children to learn the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Apostle’s Creed and to learn about the lives of Jesus and His Mother Mary.

• Just start: There’s no time like the present and no place like home. (Adapted from “How to Pray a Family Rosary” – CNA Resources)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning statement on July 19, 2018 about serious health complica-tions, mostly in the Midwest, caused by the use of K2 or Spice (synthetic cannabinoid products) laced with brodifacoum, which is a blood-thinning compound commonly used in rat poison.

Despite all of these facts and recent happenings, many believe that synthetic cannabinoids are safe and a legal alternative to marijuana, which is not the case, and here are reasons why it is harmful.

K2 or Spice is a mixture of herbs, spices or chopped up plant material that is sprayed with synthetic compounds that are chemically similar to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

K2 is typically sold in small, plastic bags of dried leaves and marketed as incense or potpourri that can be smoked. These products are generally sold in head shops and gas stations.

It is also readily available for anyone to order and purchase online. And while law makers actively work on banning K2 in its most current form, the makers of the drug change the

chemical compounds just enough to keep ahead of the laws.

K2 is generally smoked in joints or pipes, but is also known to be consumed as a tea. K2 is also sold in liquid form and used in vaping pens, vaping pipes and e-cigarettes. Side effects associated with K2: • Agitation• Pale skin• Seizures• Vomiting• Profuse sweating• Uncontrolled/spastic body movements• Elevated blood pressure, heart rate and palpitations• Difficulty speaking• Severe paranoia• Delusions and hallucinations• Death

The effects of K2 occur within minutes of use and last from one to eight hours.

School Community Intervention and Prevention: SCIP is funded in part by: Lincoln Public Schools, United Way of Lincoln/Lancaster County, Region V Systems, Nebraska DHHS: Division of Behavioral Health and Region 4 Behavioral Health System.
