PLUTO PLUS ONE YEAR
It is hard to believe that it was just a yearago, on July 14, 2015, that New Horizonsswept past Pluto. It has taken almost thatlong to transmit the data the spacecraftgathered during that brief encounter. So,what have we learned, and what is stillpuzzling as planetary scientists pour overthe data?
Before New Horizons, Pluto wasexpected to be a dead, cold, inert ball ofices. Scientists expected to learn muchabout the origins of our solar system fromsuch a pristine object by looking at its icesand their compositions. Ironically, it may bedwarf minor planets that yield the mostinformation about how we got here.
As usual, the experts were confoundedeven before the closest approach. Imagesstarted showing geologic features on thesurface as the spacecraft approached thatwere never expected. S. Alan Stern, the mis-sion’s principal investigator, said of theexperience, “It’s much more complex thanpeople, ourselves as experts included, expected. It rivals Mars.”
“You’d expect to see a boring crateredball,” said William M. Grundy of LowellObservatory in Arizona, who leads theteam analyzing the composition of Pluto’ssurface.
The first shock was seeing a smoothheart-shaped region, now called Tombaugh
Regio after New Mexican Clyde Tombaugh, the discovererof Pluto. One side of the region is covered in nitrogen ice(which freezes at -346°F), the other with methane ice(which freezes at -295.6°F). There were few craters in theregion indicating ongoing processes to reshape the area andcover up the impacts.
New evidence also finds that Pluto probably had, andlikely still has, a subsurface water ocean. The cracks seenacross the landscape are indicative of the planet slowlyfreezing. Since water expands as it freezes, the surface ofPluto has also expanded and cracked. Other indications aremountains of water ice, as high as 11,000 feet high. Whilemuch of the surface is nitrogen and methane ices, water iceacts like bed rock here on Earth. At Pluto’s frigid tempera-tures, somewhere between -400°F and -360°F, ice is veryhard.
There are also blocks of water ice jamming together toform mountains. These may be similar to icebergs on Earth, except the icebergs are floating on a denser sea of nitrogenice.
A mountain, named Wright Mons, is somewhat con-founding. It rises two miles above the terrain, spans ninetymiles across and has a hole at the center. Wright Mons isthought to be a volcano spewing not hot lava, but nitrogen. If nitrogen is transported deep enough underground, thewarmer water ice would melt the nitrogen and create thevolcano as the nitrogen erupts to the surface.
Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. Yetthe moon is much less dense, indicating it is mostly waterice and much less of the other ices. As Charon cooled andfroze, it too expanded and left a gaping six hundred mile-long crack on its surface.
The rest of Pluto’s tiny moons, four small ones, spinwildly as they orbit, likely created in a collision between aninfant Pluto and similar sized object. This collision createdthe dwarf planet and all of its moons. Finally, Pluto has onething in common with Earth: a blue sky.
NEW HORIZONS
The spacecraft that flew past Pluto in July of last year isnow on a new mission. Extended through at least 2019,when New Horizons will encounter 2014 MU69—just thirtymiles wide and probably more pristine. Along the way, wemay get a long-range view of dwarf planet Eris and per-haps many smaller bodies. New Horizons has a lot left toshow us.
