PlanningMattersESTATE PLANNING NEWSLETTER FROM THE DANA-FARBER SOCIETY
Fall 2015
After Ginny and Marc Packin moved to Western
Massachusetts from New Jersey in 1990, they
quickly became involved in the area’s active
fundraising community for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy
Fund, led by Barbara and Jim Sadowsky, Dana-Farber
Trustees and co-chairs of the Dana-Farber Society (DFS).
Jim and Marc were college roommates, and the Sadowskys
introduced the Packins to many fellow Dana-Farber and
Jimmy Fund supporters.
“The people we met were just fantastic and
hardworking, and they have kept us involved,” Marc said.
At the time, Ginny and Marc’s family had not been
touched by cancer, but they were eager to help with
events like Chefs for Jimmy and the Jimmy Fund Golf
Tournament/Jeffrey Vinick Memorial. A trip to
Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic greatly affected the
Packins and deepened their commitment.
“We realized we could be a part of helping these
children on their journey,” Ginny said.
In addition to their decades of volunteer work, the
Packins will leave a legacy of helping others affected by
cancer through a gift to Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund
in their will. With this recent addition to their estate
plans, the Packins join many of their fellow volunteers
as members in the DFS, a group of dedicated individuals
who have made a planned gift to Dana-Farber and the
Jimmy Fund.
“We didn’t find it difficult to balance taking care of
Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, as well as our family, in
our estate plans,” Marc said.
“We know our gift will have a positive impact in the
future, and it will be handled well,” Ginny added.
Over the course of Ginny and Marc’s involvement,
family members in other states have been diagnosed with
cancer, and the Packins feel their support of Dana-Farber
and the Jimmy Fund makes a difference beyond New
England and will continue to do so for years to come.
“The research that’s going on at Dana-Farber doesn’t
stay local—it’s shared with the cancer-fighting community
globally,” Ginny said. “That means a lot to us.”
Making a gift to Dana-Farber that helps change lives is as simple
as placing the following language in your will: “I bequeath (a
specific amount, a portion of your total or residual estate) to
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Inc., 450 Brookline Avenue,
Boston, Massachusetts 02215.”

The Dana-Farber Society’s incredible community of
donors and a quarter-century of progress against
cancer were cause for commemoration at the DFS 25th
anniversary recognition dinner in June. What began as a group of
90 forward-thinking individuals in 1990 is now an engaged group
of more than 900 DFS members of all ages from 32 states and
three countries.
The Society welcomed the Honorable
Stephen G. Breyer, associate justice of the
Supreme Court of the United States and
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Trustee, as
keynote speaker for the evening. Justice
Breyer shared interesting details on “a
day in the life of a Supreme Court Justice,” and spoke of his
connection to Dana-Farber: his wife, Joanna Breyer, PhD, is a
retired psychologist who worked in Dana-Farber’s pediatric
psychosocial services for decades.
The evening was a chance to join together and refl ect on the
strides at Dana-Farber that planned gifts have made possible, and
look to a future of promising advances.FormerDana-FarberSocietyCo-ChairSandyGardnerwithherhusband,formerDana-FarberSocietyCo-ChairandTrusteeDozierGardner

As physicians trained in Boston, Martha and
Arthur “Art” Bobruff always knew of Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute. Their knowledge of Dana-Farber
drastically changed in 1997 when their 22-year-old son,
David, was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
After an extraordinary college career at Amherst College,
David obtained a promising and challenging financial
position at Goldman Sachs in New York City when he
suffered a seizure. After what the Bobruffs describe as a
“most horrible experience” at the hospital where David
was first diagnosed, they contacted Dana-Farber and
David was transferred by ambulance to Boston.
At Dana-Farber, the Bobruffs found care that was a
“class above” and a new treatment plan for David was
implemented. Nearly two decades later, he is healthy and
married with a young son.
“We support Dana-Farber because we are so grateful for
where our family is at this point—compared to where we
could have been,” Art said.
To express their gratitude, Martha and Art established
a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) using appreciated stock
to benefit Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. The CGA
provides the Bobruffs with a steady income for life and
an income tax deduction, and will ultimately benefit
Dana-Farber’s lifesaving mission.
“The financial benefits of the CGA are valuable, but
for us, there is no greater reward than knowing we are
helping Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund in the fight
against cancer,” Art said.
The Bobruffs found the CGA easy to set up, with
assistance from Dana-Farber’s Gift Planning office, and
are pleased with the financial benefits of the gift.
“We had strong feelings about giving back to a
meaningful and valuable organization, and Dana-Farber
and the Jimmy Fund was at the top of that list,” Martha
said. “Dana-Farber’s wonderful doctors and staff were
amazing, and, in our minds, it’s also the top institution
in the world to discover new treatments.”
Martha and Arthur Bobruff, pictured here with their daughter-in-law, Yael (left); daughter, Rachel (center); and son, David (far right); created a CGA to benefit Dana-Farber in gratitude for David’s care.
