SUCCESS.
OUR MBA GRADUATES ARE SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS, EMPLOYEES OF FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES AND NONPROFITS, BANKERS, DOCTORS, NURSES, SOCIAL WORKERS... AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.
WHATEVER THE CAREER, THE RESULTS ARE RELIABLY INSPIRING: PLU GRADS DO AMAZING THINGS WITH THEIR DEGREES—AND FOR THE WORLD.
DOREEN BEARD-SIMPKINS ’11
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AND ENGAGEMENT FOR THE AVENIR MUSEUM OF DESIGN AND MERCHANDISE
CURIOSITY MATTERSBeard-Simpkins completed her MBA at PLU while working full-time and raising teenagers. She now lives and works in Fort Collins, Colo.
“The words of writer Saul Bellow speak strongly to me: ‘Boredom is the shriek of unused capacities.’ We each are responsible for remaining curious throughout our lives, and if we are lucky as well as attentive, we look around and optimize opportunities for filling that ‘unused capacity,’ even when the prospect is daunting. Then we turn around and encourage others; there is no time to be bored. I have no doubt that the combination of my curiosity, the PLU School of Business faculty and coursework and the MBA credential were significant factors in the attainment of my opportunity at Colorado State University.”

“I love the fact that PLU lets students go at their own pace! I was able to chip away at the graduate program and take classes when they fit my schedule. It’s all about persistence and not quitting. If you keep moving forward, you’ll eventually earn the prize!”

W W W. P L U . E D U / M B A
“The vision that physicians needed to be more involved in (and accountable for) the business side of healthcare—together with the realization that healthcare needed to learn from other industries to take the lead at addressing its own cost issues—led to my personal goal to obtain an MBA. I am truly thankful I lived in the same community as Pacific Lutheran University.”

MIKE JORGENSEN ’13
PLAN ADMINISTRATOR
ENTHUSIASM MATTERSJorgensen works at Panagiotu Pension Advisors, Inc. in Tacoma, where he oversees legal and compliance work for more than 75 employer-sponsored retirement plans. He also owns a small business that turns wood pallets into high-quality home furnishings and décor.
“Enthusiasm is learned. It is a deep belief—or a call to action—that stems from persistence, goal-setting and knowledge of oneself. It is a journey that transcends all failures and successes with the hope of making a difference. It is this hope, in combination with the support of family, peers and PLU faculty, that has energized me and helped me take an active interest in my education, career and community. As individuals, being enthusiastic about what we do is an obligation that we have to society. It will make the world a better place.”
DR. MARK MULDER ’93, ’00
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS
COMPASSION MATTERSDr. Mulder is an Assistant Professor of Business who teaches marketing courses in PLU’s undergraduate and MBA programs. An active researcher, Mulder also is deeply engaged in the business and nonprofit communities and was selected for a professional development program at Harvard University.
“At the heart of compassion is passion, and I am interested how the passion for business can include social change. I believe in the triple bottom line with business: Profits are essential, though the environment and communities are also vital stakeholders to consider. In our MBA program, students and faculty together explore ways one can improve the world by being compassionate and passionate about business.”
