From the desk of

Father Flores If you look at the liturgical calendar for the first week of Christmas, known as the Christmas octave, you will notice something seemingly out of place. The Church finds herself in a time of intense joy and celebration as she celebrates the birth of Jesus and right away, we see the feasts of some significant martyrs. On December 26, we celebrate St. Stephen, the deacon, who was stoned to death as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. On December 28, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This recalls the biblical account of the boys under the age of three who were slaughtered at Herod’s command as he tried to get rid of the newborn Jesus. Then on December 29, we celebrate the Feast of St. Thomas Becket, who opposed the King of England and suffered martyrdom. We can rightly ask why we celebrate these bloody and disconnected events so close to such a happy feast as Christmas. Perhaps the Church in her wisdom is engaging us to consider what it means to accept the newborn King as Lord. To accept Jesus as Lord means that we live under His domain, in obedience to Him and loyal to none other. In return, the Lord offers us eternal life with Him in the kingdom of heaven. We who celebrate Christmas, acknowledge that He calls us to something more; He calls us to look for our complete happiness and fulfillment with Him in heaven. To be sure, we still honor, respect, and safeguard our lives, our bodies, and our souls. This is why Christians can set out with confidence setting the example for how to confront the adversities of life. We confront them knowing that no matter how bad things can get for us, our happiness lies with the newborn King of Kings. We can be shortsighted and live as though this life is all we have. If this life is all there is then we can expect to become paralyzed by fear in this time of pandemic, in our political situation, in economic troubles or just the plain difficulties of life. If this life is all there is then we would have to do everything and take any extreme to preserve this fragile existence. These martyrs' feasts of Christmas awaken us to the fact that we cannot live in fear, we cannot give into sadness and depression, and we confront them with hope, which is the reality that this life cannot be enough to satisfy our desire for life with Jesus.

Yes, you and I should take precautions and be careful in all matters of life, but we must live free as did the martyrs who have shown us the path to the fullness of life. Perhaps this can help us understand in part the mystery of suffering; it reminds us that we were not made for this world, because we were made for more. Happy New Year.

January 10, 2021 Baptism of the Lord “And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” - MARK 1:11 Through our baptism, we too, are daughters and sons of God. We are disciples of Jesus. As true disciples, we are called to actively participate in our Catholic faith, not just be mere bystanders. This means working in collaboration with the Holy Spirit and discerning how we are being asked to use our gifts—using our gifts for the benefit of others and not just for our own interests and comfort.
