Father Flores

Purposefully Catholic (PC) is not a faith formation program. It is admittedly challenging to explain outside of the frame-work of faith formation because, for the most part, that is how we have experienced opportunities for advancing in the faith. Purposefully Catholic is about engaging our religion and the faith that underlies it; in a word, Purposefully Catholic is about encountering Jesus, and how He meets us in the life and ministry of the Church. It is in and through His Church that Our Lord has established as the normative way that we encounter Him, as the Gospels so clearly relate. One aspect of encountering Jesus is through faith formation or catechesis which is all about learning how to know, love and serve the Lord in this life. I want to emphasize that learning about Him is a tool for experiencing Him and learning to love Him. Our relationship with Him cannot be only about faith formation, which has been a common error over the years. One of the goals of Purposefully Catholic is to facilitate our encounter with Jesus in the Church but also in the home. This is a very important goal especially as it pertains to passing on the faith from parents to children. The Church has held, and continues to emphasize, that the parents are the primary teachers of their children in the faith. Sadly, many parents have handed over the majority, if not all, of that responsibility to the parish, and parishes have allowed this to happen. This is the fourth point that we are addressing through Purposefully Catholic. The parents’ involvement in catechesis for many families consists in simply dropping off the children at religious educa-tion classes and picking them up afterwards, often without benefit of Sunday Mass. It seems that in the typical Ameri-can home, parents have forfeited their role as spiritual heads of the household, and the results are disastrous. By sheer force of example, generations of children have grown up without spiritual leadership in the home. This in turn leads to families without a spiritual head where the faith is forgotten until eventually it dies in the home, and so often with the family still fully convinced that they are Catholic and proud to proclaim that faith. One of the principal goals of Purposefully Catholic is to face this by encouraging and equipping parents to be the spiritual leaders of their home including the responsibility of teaching and passing on the teachings of our religion to their children. I think that many parents could be intimidated at this prospect. Through Purposefully Catholic, we want to make it achievable and life giving to the parents. Purposefully Catholic is certainly a family-wide initiative; but regarding catechesis, it is aimed squarely at the parents and not at the children. Our aim is to give parents witness of the faith, encour-agement in living it themselves, and finally, the resources and support in handing on that faith to their children. All families (no matter age or stage in life) registered with Purposefully Catholic will receive a guide that we will use to lead topics and conversation. The guide will be heavily referenced in the PC H@ME Tuesday livestreamed programs and at a monthly in-person gathering at the church. Parents of young children will receive additional resources to guide their teaching and prayer at home. Additionally, children up to the fifth grade, along with their families, will have a gathering one Sunday a month which is geared to support and back up what the children have been learning at home. Families with children preparing for First Holy Communion will have additional support classes in the form of a couple of ‘retreats’ throughout the year. It is important that youth engage with their peers in important aspects of life such as faith, and so our youth group will retain its traditional framework. Our youth, those from 6th to 12th grade, will meet weekly on Thursdays and preparation for Confirmation will be incorporated into this so youth preparing for Confirmation must be a part of the youth group. I am happy to say that we have teamed up with the parishes of St. Thomas and St. George to form a single tri-parish youth group. I hope this is only the beginning of collaboration and joining of resources for more effective ministry.

In summary, there is a faith formation program, but it is based in the home and led by the parents, the spiritual heads of the household with support by the parish. Please join me in praying for the parents of children and youth as they become Purposefully Catholic and are invited to take seriously their God given role as spiritual heads of their family.

† Be Purposeful † A message from Tim Simunds Faith Formation & Evangelization Team (Youth & Adult)

SO, WHAT IS “RCIA”?

This term refers to the “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” which is often called “the RCIA process” or even just “RCIA.” It is designed as a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful, through which a non-baptized per-son prepares for and then receives the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist; thus becoming a Catholic person. By joining the catechumens (those who are becoming Catholic) in reflecting on the value of the Paschal mystery and by renewing their own conversion, the faithful provide an example that will help the catechumens obey the Holy Spirit more generously. The following sections will help make the 4 stages of the RCIA initiation process clearer. Period of Evangelization & the Precatechumenate. This period is a time for questions to be answered and for the Gospel message to be delivered to “inquirers.” It has no fixed beginning nor fixed end because the Holy Spirit works in a highly personal way to move each heart to conversion, and every person’s response to His promptings must be a free choice. The RCIA process is flexible enough to allow an individual to take the time he or she needs to find God, fall in love with Him, and resolve to seek the fullness of life in Christ and His Church. Once inquirers have experienced an initial conversion and the desire to become Catholics, they are ready to move into the next period. This period culminates with the “Rite of Acceptance” wherein inquirers become “catechumens.” Period of the Catechumentate. Catechumens are taught the full Deposit of Faith and are strengthened through blessings and other minor rites. Once they have progressed sufficiently in faith that they are ready for the sacraments of initiation, they might participate in the parish Rite of Sending to the local bishop. Therein the bishop presides over the Rite of Election for catechumens who are thereafter called “the elect”. Period of Purification & Enlightenment: This period is one of intense spiritual preparation for the sacraments of initia-tion. It coincides with Lent and culminates in the reception of the sacraments of initiation, normally at the parish Easter Vigil. This reception of the sacraments results in another name change; the elect are now fully-initiated Catholics. For the following year they are called “neophytes.” Period of Mystagogy & the Neophyte Year: The seven weeks between Easter and Pentecost are devoted to mystagogy, a deepening of the experience and understanding of the sacramental life of a Catholic Christian. The remain-der of the neophyte year is to be devoted to learning how to live a sacramental life, growing in spiritual understanding, and becoming fully part of parish life. If you know someone considering the Catholic faith, I’d love to hear from them!! The parish is here to help guide them on their journey of the sacraments and live in the fullness of relationship with Jesus and the Church He founded. You can reach me at [email protected] or call 208-765-5108 x.12. I look forward to our journey together.

To Jesus through Mary and St. Joseph,

Tim

September 27, 2020 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Do nothing out of selfishness; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves…” Philippians 2:3

Pride and ego are hard things to control. We see how others act or dress and think we are superior to them. We idolize our own self-image. But, in stewardship, if we truly believe everything is a gift from God, we recognize all the people that God has put in our lives as gifts!
