John Heywood, (English playwrightand poet, 1497-1580) said, “Romewas not built in a day”.

Depending on the date you read this, The Porticowill be about 120 days old, and, for us, it seemshighly relevant to look back to see just howmuch we have built in that short time.

Our Mission Statement set out that we wished,on behalf of family and independentbusinesses, to bring increased commercialawareness to everyone’s door, throughout theMalvern Hills District (and in addition thismonth, including Severn Stoke and Kempsey).

To deliver this message, The Portico hasformulated a marketing package thatincorporates a magazine, on-line internetpresence, social media and loyalty card schemethat brings information about businesses, products and services under one banner.

Since our launch, we have already been joinedby over 100 businesses, each with a dedicatedweb-page on the www.theportico.co.uk/malvernwebsite. More are joining each month.

• Our website has been visited thousands oftimes, and webpage visits are now in the tensof thousands.

• This, our 5th magazine, means that we haveprinted and distributed 175,000 magazinesthroughout the Malvern Hills District. Noother single issue covers our area with suchnumbers, so frequently

• Many of our clients are, through us, learningto link to facebook and twitter and invitingtestimonials.

• The Portico has issued most of thebusinesses with their own unique QR code

• The Portico is over half-way to achieving itstarget of 3000/3500 loyalty card customersby Christmas. Achieving that target wouldrepresent nearly 10% of households in theMalvern Hills District.

• There are now over eighty locations to collect loyalty card points, with this numbergrowing monthly

However, what has impressed The Portico teammost of all has been the strong message backfrom local shoppers – “ Thank you Portico forbringing news and details of our businesscommunity, and yes, we really do want tosupport our local shops”. Happily, we can reportthat you are doing so in your thousands!

Happy reading, Happy local shopping.

As a supplierworking within theHospitality and Leisure

Industry, China Boy was hithard with several key clients cancellingcontracts. Jag and Neeta foundthemselves faced with two choices, eithergive up and lose their life savings, orembark on a programme of becomingmore proactive in finding new business, and cutting their costs.

As well as cold calling and emailing togradually build their client base up again, two years ago they decided to reducetheir overheads by moving to moreappropriately sized premises based atMitre Farm in Corse Lawn. As part of areview of their costs, the Dhanaks alsofound that by investing in technology, theycould not only improve their service, butin the longer term, reduce labour costs…

Enter King William (no, not thatWilliam!)… a massive presence in theChina Boy Warehouse, this amazingmachine has the capacity to clean and dry1500 pieces of crockery or glassware inone fell swoop. Imagine the washing upequivalent of wi-fi – it all happens as if by

magic. Slide the crate of dirtyitems in, lift the clean items

out and they are ready tobe dispatched. No

wiping, polishing orre-packing.

King William has done awaywith the need for literallyhundreds of man-hours wipingand polishing which has had ahuge impact on labour costs, productivity and quality. However, the company is notwithout the human touch - inaddition to Jag and Neeta whoboth work full time, they retaina small team of dedicated staff

who cheerfully meet amazingly fastturnaround times (with the help of HisHighness of course).

Jag and Neeta have turned their businessaround. It hasn’t been easy but they haveworked very hard over the years, creatinga loyal client base. They cover a largegeographic area including the ThreeCounties, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire andbeyond, often meeting quite significantchallenges along the way. However, theyhave a superb reputation for meetingdeadlines and client’s requirements – thetestimonials on the Portico site highlightthe quality of service they deliver on aregular basis.

China Boy Catering Equipment Hireprovides a complete service to Caterers,Hotels and private clients to suit everyfunction from a small dinner party to agrand ball. And the best thing is, youdon’t have to do the washing up….. so it’sthree cheers for the King!

Jag & Neeta Dhanakspent many yearsbuilding up theirmobile cateringbusiness, specialising inquality Indian cuisine. However, in 2007, theydecided to change tack and became theowners of China Boy Catering Hire.

The saying goes that hindsight is awonderful science and as we all knownow, at the end of 2007 the UKdescended into the worst economicrecession in recent times.

The good egg life…Before having children, Sharon Goodridgeworked hard on pursuing her career in thebanking industry and for a while following thebirth of her two eldest children, she continuedto work travelling across several counties andSouth Wales, undertaking the juggling actmany working mothers will be familiar with. Not without a tinge ofsadness, she decidedto give up her highprofile role andconcentrate on heryoung family. However, she did make time tostudy for several years, gaining herqualifications insugarcrafting as she hadalways enjoyed cakemaking and decorating.Earlier this year, she setup her own business -Good Egg Cakes -designing, making anddecorating a wide rangeof bespoke cakes for anytype of occasion.

Since then, her feethaven’t really touched the ground and much of her workcomes through personal recommendation. Sharon particularlyloves the creative design stage of bespoke cake making, asshe works with the client, sometimes on the briefest of briefsand the end result can often be viewed as a work of art!

Sharon doesn’t really see the supermarket standard birthdayor celebration cakes as direct competition as her clientsgenerally have a specific requirement and each product is anindividual labour of love. Clients with special dietaryrequirements, such as gluten free can also be accommodated.

We are delighted that Sharon decided to join the Portico rightfrom the beginning, She received orders almost assoon as the first edition of the Magazine was out andanother little known fact is that she kindly helped us with avoiceover for our promotional launch video – the best thingwas she turned up for the recording with some of her

delicious cupcakes!

Although her businessis very new, Sharon has beendelighted with the response todate and hopes to continue building on her second successfulcareer! Please contact her if you require a topquality bespoke cake for someone special!

BREAKING NEWS... HOUSEHOLDS INSTALLING RENEWABLEHEATING SYSTEMS WILL RECEIVE HUNDREDS OF POUNDS

A YEAR IN GOVERNMENT INCENTIVE PAYMENTS!The Renewable Heat Incentive will

help home and business ownersbeat soaring energy prices!

A heat pump is a fantastic investment if…

In July 2013, an announcement camefrom the Government whichconfirmed that Renewable HeatIncentive payments are due to beginin Spring 2014, Home-owners whohave had a renewable heatingsystem installed by an MCSaccredited installer from July 2009are eligible for these payments.Commercial properties have alsobeen taking advantage of thescheme, since it was announced fornon-domestic properties in 2011.

We spoke to David McCann –Director at Solar Solutions Malvern, who told us about one of theirtechnologies – The Air Source HeatPump and why it is a greatinvestment. ‘We are very pleasedthat the domestic RHI tariff has nowbeen announced as it encouragesmore people to turn to renewableenergy, and become greener in theirlifestyles. One of the systems thatwe install here at Solar Solutions isthe Air Source Heat Pump’. Davidexplained that the Air Source Heatpump is a fitted box which sitsoutside your property and extractsheat from the air outside, in thesame way that your fridge extractsheat from its inside. This heat is thenabsorbed into fluid, which passesthrough a compressor to raise itstemperature. Then this highertemperature heat can be passedaround your heating system and canbe used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, warm air

convectors and hot water. ‘We arevery pleased to be working withPanasonic and their range of Air-Source Heat Pumps, called Aquarea.Panasonic state that the Aquarea isthe most comprehensive, versatileand cost-effective range of Air-to-water heat pumps on the Market.

‘I am confident that our customerswill love the Panasonic products justas much as we do, and along withour bespoke package we are able tooffer our customers the bestsolutions for their homes. During asite survey we will weigh up alloptions to suit each individualcustomer to make sure that they getthe best possible service andoutcome that they require. In fact,we aim to exceed expectations, ascustomer satisfaction is the mostimportant factor in our business andif we find that your home isn’tsuitable for a particular technology,we will suggest other ideas. Forinstance if your home isn’t suited foran Air or Ground Source Heatpump,we might advise that a Biomassboiler is a better option as we offer arange of systems between 8kW and2mW covering both domestic andcommercial installations.’

Renewable Energy has a host ofsocial, environmental and economicbenefits, and with the new DomesticRHI being announced and fossil fuelprices constantly rising, there hasnever been a better time to invest ingreen technologies.

• Your property is well insulated. This will improve the efficiency of the heat pump

• You currently use oil, LPG, solid fuel or electricity to heat your property

• You have somewhere outside to put it – the pump itself isnot large, but it will need space around it in order to get agood flow of air

• You have under floor heating or are planning on installingunder floor heating – this is because heat pumps provideheat at lower temperatures over longer periods than traditional heating systems

• If the system is intended for a new development.Combining the installation with other building work canreduce the cost of installing the system

• You have Solar PV installed, as a Heat Pump and Solar PVare an ideal combination as heat pumps use electricity

Solar Solutions Malvern is a friendly, family runcompany operating as a social enterprise, with apassion for renewable energy.

Donna is delighted to announce the launch of The Cambridge Satchel Co. at Kozihaus

If you haven’t already been to Kozihaus –the wonderfully multi-colouredhomeware and accessories shop ownedby the equally vibrant Donna, you reallymust. Especially since Kozihaus is nowproud to stock a selection of satchelsfrom the world famous CambridgeSatchel Company.

Kozihaus and the Cambridge Satchel Companydon’t only share a love of bold colours but alsosound ethics, clean living and good-quality,clever design. Donna Bird and Julie Deane (thefounder of The Cambridge Satchel Co.) havesimilar success stories of how mothers turnedentrepreneurs can create something amazingwith sheer drive and enthusiasm. As Donnasays “There’s always a place for good design.”

With their distinctive identity – colourful aswell as functional, Donna knew these satchelswould fit in perfectly. And they certainly do.She approached The Cambridge SatchelCompany who were very enthusiastic to giveher a range to sell. Malvern is lucky to havethem as their nearest stockists are inBirmingham. They now sit proudly on hershelves, reflecting the array of colours of allthe vibrant products around the shop, givingoff a wonderfully rich smell of leather.

Some may have heard about the beginnings ofthe satchels from the Google Chrome advertthis year(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0qDrRJT4zE) – an inspiring story of having an ideaand running with it. The company wasfounded at Julie’s kitchen table with theambition to preserve British manufacturing. After setting up the first factory that employeda couple local craftsmen, its success hassoared so far that the satchels are now sold inover 100 countries worldwide, in departmentstores such as Harrods and Bloomingdales.

Staying true to the history of the brand thesesatchels remain handcrafted in Britain, yetthey’ve kept their design fresh by addingmodern twists like bright colours. Donna’scollection ranges from the traditional “ox-blood” colour to more exclusivesummer colours such as fluorescentyellow which is perfect for cyclists in

the dark (noneed of ayellow jacketfor Jillian Klee, the luckywinner of the Morgan Bike)

As we sipped deliciousJames Gormet coffee(made in Ross-on-Wye, thehome of the country’s bestcoffee) Donna explained“you take out what you putin, and I hope mycustomers feel thatpositive energy and knowthey are welcome to comefor a friendly browse.”

Donna evidently loves thecustomer interaction – shetold me she is open to introducing newproducts that her customers recommend, such as the garlic twister, and she loveshearing all the different ways they plan touse her multi-purpose products (like theleaf-shaped teabag tray which doubles upas a soap dish.)

As you can imagine Donna is thrilled to bepromoting the launch of the iconicsatchels at the beginning of September. Itwill certainly celebrate the entrepreneurialspirit embodied by both The CambridgeSatchel Company and Kozihaus.

September – a great month to decorate! Potentially neither too hot or cold, and hopefully, not too wet!Warm and overcast is best. Recent talk from the Met officemay scupper these plans, however, I hear an Indian Summer ispossible this year.

When considering the exterior of your property, protection isthe most important consideration. Don’t rush exterior paintingprojects, you may live to regret it. Always prepare surfacesproperly. If you are using a decorator, please listen to them. Ifthey say they are moving your date due to the weather, theyare not fobbing you off, just being sensible.

Now, colour on the outside is harder to change if you get itwrong. So be cautious. Don’t offend the street by doingsomething alien to it. Yes, be different, but in the right way.Remember, an unusual scheme will often make the propertymore difficult to shift if selling down track.

Having said this, there is nothing wrong with a statement frontdoor. I just love these. The best one I saw recently was orange,on a black and white timber-framed building. Pewter doorfurniture, plus two glorious orange and green floralarrangements, in grey baskets, hanging either side, completedthe picture. Looked just wonderful. When using sample pots, try painting large sheets of paper, hanging on the door, thenwalk up and down the street to see how it feels. It is also agood idea to try this in daylight and evening light.

If you have a glazed front door, then consider stained glasspanels. I have commissioned some beautiful pieces from ourlocal man, Malcolm Witcherley. He has a great workshop inMalvern, and a hive of glorious pieces of glass.

Stained glass will also add beauty to your hallway, so chosecolours that reflect the interior as well as the exterior. Whenthe light shines through this can look truly delightful, adding anew dimension to the space.

If you have railings or gates, consider colours for these. Don’tstick to wood stain or black. Experiment. Out near TenburyWells is a white corner cottage. They have painted the railingright round the cottage in a pale pistachio green, and thesame colour around the door. Everything else is white. Nomatter what time of the day I drive past, or whatever theweather, it always makes me smile. Simple but effective!

My favourite paints for exteriors are Farrow and Ball, and alsoLittle Greene Paint Company. Quality is excellent, and thecolours are a joy to choose from.

We carry Farrow and Ball at Sarah-Jane’s. Have fun. I will bringyou some of my interior painting tips next month. If you needany decorators, just email me and I will recommend.

Harper’s BazaarLaurence Harper says, “ I met my wife Joan, at theMalvern Winter Gardens, 48 years ago. Overthose years we have founded a family businessand, as all such businesses do, worked long andhard to get to where we are today.

Our original premises, a large yard and aseparate hop warehouse, were in Worcester. Westarted out with second-hand furniture, butquickly progressed into Government Surplusfurniture, as that allowed us to acquire thequantities we needed to export to countries, such as Southern Ireland. We grew to bewholesalers, exporters and retailers ofGovernment Surplus. In those days, it was easyto buy thousands of items at a time.

Thirty five years ago we decided to move toMalvern, the more easily to supply the manyboarding schools that were here at that time.Empty premises were difficult to come by then, sowe bought Fisher`s coal-yard, and later the fishshop on the main road. We added Governmentclothing about this time and not long afterwards, new clothing and footwear from EastGermany. Today, our customers areamazed to enter such a narrowshop and find such a cavernousbuilding behind! Not to mentionthe range and quantity of stock!

In 1978, the MoD passed ourdetails to the BBC, as possiblesuppliers of government furniturefor films and television. Over the yearswe have been fortunate to supply itemsfor films such as “The English Patient(which won the set designer an Oscar), TheAvengers, and bits and pieces for each ofthe Harry Potter films.

Today, life and times have moved on. Chris, our son, runs the business now, and we nolonger do furniture. Surplus clothing hasgiven way to new outdoor and workplaceclothing, camping equipment and so muchmore. Because of our long experience oftrading and connections, we are able tosecure good deals. This in turn, linked toour depth of product knowledge, enablesus to offer customers the ability to visit, see, discuss and buy at competitiveprices. Please call in, we would loveto see you”.

SAS is an arboricultural machinery business, andcaters for the needs of tree surgeons, as well as thegeneral public. They supply a wide range of servicesand forestry equipment.

Malvern Mowers and Tractors needs the lion’s shareof the premises, as they are Associated Dealers for anumber of suppliers, such as John Deere, Stihl, andWolfgarten. Alongside this, they stock lawn tractors, mowers, chainsaws, strimmers, woodchippers,

stump grinders and consumables from oils tostrimmer line.

A major part of the weekly workload is servicing andrepairing all of the above equipment, including oldtractors and farm machinery. Paul has noticed anincreasing need for welding and fabrication and bothhe and Alan are happy to both discuss and quote forthis service. Paytons was established almost thirtyyears ago, first opening in an upstairsoffice tucked away above Lloyds Bank, near the Post Office in Malvern Link.Recently we outgrew those offices, andin June we moved down the road - justbeyond the BP garage as you go out toWorcester.

At the same time we changed ourname, and we are nowQualitySolicitors Paytons.

So what’s that all about?

Well, in the last few years the solicitor’sprofession has changed quite a bit.Solicitors aren’t known for modern thinking(it’s not that long ago that we weren’t evenallowed to advertise!), but new laws andregulation and the advent of the internethave altered the legal landscape.

Many consumers now think in terms of“brands”. Where would you to go buy yourspectacles? And your insurance? What’syour favourite sports car? What names leapto mind?

What about legal services? Which nationalbrand do you know? That’s what occurred tothe founders of QualitySolicitors – there ISno “brand” for solicitors – until now.Consumers want things like clearcommunication, a quick response, directaccess to a lawyer, transparent pricing, andflexible opening hours. That’s what we aim tooffer, and we have joined with the other 250QS locations across the country in promisingyou that level of service.

But shouldn’t there be more to a purchasingdecision than a simple brand name? Whatabout the small business, owned by locals, where reputation is a matter of personalhonour?

I couldn’t agree more. For some things, wewill always get a better experience by goinglocal, and independent. For instance, for myDIY shopping I always go first to HandymanHouse in Malvern Link, where I know I getproper advice and prompt service. I muchprefer Steve and his staff to the “national”alternatives.

In fact, that’s what made joining QS soattractive. Unlike some other “brands”,each QualitySolicitors firm is independent –there is no “head office” telling us how todo our work. Our existing clients still thinkof us just as “Paytons”; but for others whoare maybe using legal services for the firsttime, or who weren’t happy with their lastexperience of the legal profession, ourQualitySolicitors membership is additionalreassurance that we subscribe to valuesthat really matter to consumers.

Barnard’s Green traders servingtheir community...The Barnard’s Green Traders Association has a motto

– “Traders serving their community”, and, throughoutthe year, they participate in events such as theMalvern Carnival. This year’s bucket collection, andvarious other proceeds from that weekend, were inaid of Home Start. Jane Knowles, of Just So, reportsthat some £1700 was very generously donated thisyear. But what do we know about Home Start? Whoare they and what do they do?

Based in an office at Barnards Green, Home-StartMalvern Hills, as part of Home-Start SouthWorcestershire, belongs to the nationwide network of independent local charities which make up the Home-Start organisation.

Manager Jess Bird says “each Home-Start scheme isan independent voluntary organisation which workstowards the increased confidence and independenceof the family. Set up in 2001 by local people whoworked with families and children, closer links wereforged in 2010 with the neighbouring scheme atWorcester, and now operates under the name Home-Start Worcestershire. We expect to support over 50families this year in the Malvern Hills District, with thehelp of 25-30 volunteers. Each family receives anaverage of 6-9 months of weekly home-visiting, andvolunteers offer a combination of emotional support, friendship and practical help. Families may ask forhelp because of challenges, such as illness, bereavement, financial stress, relationshipbreakdown, or may just simply need a helping handor listening ear”

The scheme is operated by a small team of trainedand qualified staff, under the direction of the SchemeManager. Overheads are kept to a minimum, and over80% of the charity’s income is used directly to recruit, support, supervise and manage the team of dedicatedvolunteers in Malvern and the surrounding area.

Donors to Home-Start in South Worcestershire can becertain that any money raised by Malvern people willbe used specifically for supporting Malvern families.

Summing up, Jess says “we are extremely fortunateand grateful to the Barnard’s Green TradersAssociation and people in Malvern for their fantasticsupport. It means so much to me and my team, andsupporting volunteers. Through your generosity wereally can make a difference to people’s lives”

• Full diagnostic, medical, andsurgical facilities• Friendly and approachable staff• Spread the cost of routine treat-ments with our new health plan• Free Parking•24 hour emergency care

A chance visit into the surgery from aconcerned member of the public,

started a small thoughtexperiment in the practice. The member of the public

brought a snake skin that shehad found in her garden into us,and asked what sort of snake it

had belonged to. A quickglance at the size, shape of

the head and the shape of thescales made it pretty clear that it

had belonged to an adder. Now I,having spent most of my youth in

a snake infested part of Botswana, have a well foundrespect for these creatures, and since it has been severalyears since we last saw a bite, it was time to run a ‘what if’experiment in the practice.

Adders are increasingly common in andaround Malvern, with sightings especiallyon the hills and surrounding countryside. The problem is that the adder areas arealso popular dog walking areas, and it isonly a matter of time before we will see theresult of an overcurious dog sniffing thewrong end of a grumpy snake! The symptoms are usuallyvery clear – our dog will develop a severe swelling over thesite of the bite, and a combination of pain and distress afterthis. If left untreated, a dog will die from a combination ofliver and kidney failure over a 5 day period. Treatmentwithin half a day of the bite will almost always besuccessful – the problem is getting hold of the antidote. Aspart of our little simulation, we have discovered that thelocal human hospitals no longer stock the antidote, as it isexpensive and has a short shelf life. It is also clear that wewould find it hard to stock for the same reasons. We have, however, discovered a source of the antivenom locally thatwe should be able to get hold of in the golden half dayperiod. This, and a quick look on our pharmacy shelves toensure we have other necessary medications, andthe simulation was finished. Wesincerely hope that adders don’t bite anydogs in Malvern this autumn but at leastwe can count ourselves as suitablyprepared for the worst.

Although not all of us have been around for the pasthundred years or so, we have all witnessed howfashions, buildings, lifestyles and the whole range ofbusinesses that supply us with these things, haschanged in our own time.

There are shops and family businesses in Tenbury Wellsthat remain independent, and have been trading for, insome cases, as many as five generations. The bakeriesrun by the Swift family are a wonderful example of thislongevity. Alongside them are many shops that havebeen trading in excess of twenty years. In fact, it wouldbe fair to say, Tenbury Wells can boast of up to a 1000years of collective experience of retailing.

Retailing is now totally different from the early days thatmany of the above traders experienced. Perhaps themost significant has been the need to adapt to the car-borne, out-of-town retail park and on-line shoppingcustomer of the modern generation. Traders can nolonger just open their doors and hope that customerswill respect tradition, limited opening hours or even findthem in the first place! Modern consumers seek value formoney, convenience, choice, with readily availableinformation as to stock and offers available. However, itis not all doom and gloom. The wealth of experience thatis on offer in Tenbury holds strong appeal for localshoppers and visitors. Recently, there has been agradual return to the high street, as customers re-discover the delights of good service, not alwaysavailable in large retail parks!

Of course, there is much more to a town than just itsshops, and Tenbury has a special quality and uniquenessof its own. There are a number of major attractions thatreflect the area, none more so than the annual Applefest, and also the Mistletoe Festival.

The Applefest is held on the Burgage Recreational are,(next to the swimming pool) and is held in October. TheApplefest provides everyone with the opportunity tocelebrate the Mighty Apple, in all of it glorious varieties.Great family entertainment is provided withdemonstrations on grafting, cooking with apples, andtrade stands of all types.

Later in the year, you can experience the MistletoeFestival, with a day packed full of activities basedaround the mistletoe theme. This year, there is to be aspecial evening performance by Carole Ann Duffy (PoetLaureate) in the Regal.

The easiest way for fraudsters to access your accounts isto uncover your PINS and passwords. It is surprising, therefore, that the most popular PIN number is still foundto be 1234. Other popular combinations include 1111, 0000,1212 and 7777. Research also suggests that most peopleuse memorable combinations derived from relatives’birthdays or anniversaries, phone numbers, date of birth orhome address numbers. As a consequence, fraudsters arefinding it increasingly easy to get your information andwork out your PIN. There are a number of simple steps youcan take to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud:

1. Do not share your pin number with anyone

2. Never send your pin number over email or bytelephone

3. Shield your pin at a cash machine or inside a shop

4. Do not use an obvious pin combination such as thoselisted above.

5. Never write your pin number on your card

6. Do not use the same pin numbers for all of your cards

7. Make sure you sign your cards or write “picture IDrequired” on the back.

8. If you suspect your card has been stolen contact yourbank immediately.

9. Regularly check your bank statements and make surethere are no unauthorised transactions.

Better to be safe than sorry!

At this time of year, many families will haveyoung people making plans for their futuresafter weeks of waiting anxiously forexamination results. The Gap Year concepthas its origins in the UK, and since the1990's taking time out has become a right ofpassage for tens of thousands of UKstudents. Studies have been conducted byleading universities like Harvard whichconclusively show that students who take ayear out before college are more focusedand motivated when they arrive on campusthan those who don't take this detour.

We are delighted to welcome Lydia Thurlowwho is doing just this, prior to continuing herstudies at Durham University in 2014. Lydiawill be working with the team at The Porticoover the next few months as part of her planto gain a broad range work experience, whichwill help her to discover where she should goafter university. Lydia explains thebackground……

“I loved my sixth form subjects (English,French, Art and Classics) so languages, writing and design are areas I have put a lotof time into and would like to take further.Over the next year I am planning to take a

couple of art classes, volunteer at theCollege of the Blind in Hereford, helping outwith their thriving art department, and spendEaster working with a community project inthe south of France. I also have a couple ofplacements in PR and Marketing but at themoment Advertising interests me the mostand is something I hope to go into in thefuture.

Living in Malvern, I was aware of The Porticoand contacted the team to see if I could beinvolved. Chairman David Ebsworthexplained how the project aims to inform thelocal community about what is available onour doorstep, but also works alongside localfamily and independent businesses toenhance their accessibility. The Magazineprovides an opportunity for local businessstories to be told in a way thatadvertisements simply can’t. I was surprisedthat this fantastic idea hasn’t been thoughtof before! It’s been amazingly successful sofar – only in its 4th month and over 100businesses have become part of The Portico.

It seemed a brilliant project to get involvedwith, so I was delighted when Davidgenerously took me on to work with the team

over the next few months and feel sure theknowledge I gain will be invaluable when Iconsider my future plans.

I will be undertaking a wide range of workexperience that should give me insight intothe various areas of the business includingwriting, design, sales and customer service.I’ve had a little practice in writing articles andcarrying out interviews for the schoolwebsite and magazine so I was very happy tomeet Donna Bird and do my report on herwonderful shop, Kozihaus on page 10. – I hope you enjoy reading it!”

Don’t mind the Gap...
