MIGUEL SEABRAPresident of the Fundao para a Cincia e a Tecnologia
Towards the end of 2000, Portugal became a member state of the European Space
Agency, thus paving the way to full parcipaon in ESA technology and applicaons
programmes. The success achieved by Portuguese companies and research instutes
in the European Union programmes, namely in FP7, Copernicus (formerly known
as GMES) and Galileo is proof that Portuguese companies and academia are both
compeve and reliable partners.
Indeed, Portugal contributes to most European Space programmes, covering key
domains of space applicaons, ranging from satellite telecommunicaons, global
navigaon systems, Earth observaon, space technology, space sciences and roboc
eploraon. The Portuguese Space Community is an acve member of internaonal
networks, developing comple space technologies and parcipang in space science
and eploraon missions. This community is made up of innovave, knowledge-
intensive companies, specialised research instutes and modern public instuons,
all strongly engaged in advancing space science, technologies and their applicaon
in non-space sectors. Indeed, one of the s uccess factors of the Portuguese SpaceCommunity is precisely the close links between companies and academia.
The pivotal and growing role of Space-based systems, services and applicaons
in modern society is undisputable. The increasing ubiquity of space technologies
in everyday modern life has been essenal for the success of European Space
Programmes, but has also led to a signicant growth, in number and investment,
in space research acvies in China, India, and Brazil. These changes present new
challenges and urge the need to prepare for new opportunies.
Portugal has already reaped the benets of its investment in space programmes, as
reected in a signicant economic mulplier eect, a parcularly high-growth added
value and an important internaonalisaon leverage eect. Furthermore, space
science and technologies provide a powerful source of inspiraon, encing people to
learn more about the Universe and engaging youngsters in scienc and engineering
careers.
The Portuguese funding agency for science and research, Fundao para a Cincia
e a Tecnologia (FCT), has a pivotal role i n encouraging parcipaon of Portuguese
companies and research instutes in space acvies and space missions. FCT
supports advanced training of engineers in ESA and promotes technology transfer
and business incubaon. FCT also plays an important role in the coordinated acons
of several Ministries contribung to ESA and other European space programmes.
The Portuguese Space Catalogue portrays a representave overview of the
Portuguese Space Community, describing their main competencies in space sci ence,
space technologies and their corresponding applicaons. We hope that you will
nd it a useful guide for a deeper understanding of the varied and rich landscape of
Portuguese companies and research instutes in the space domain.

Capacitors are fundamental components that store, lter, andregulate electrical energy and current ow. They are found in allelectronic applicaons and products used today, including computer, telecommunicaon, automove, military and aerospace, medical,industrial/instrumentaon, and consumer market segments.
High Reliability versions of KEMET Corporaon capacitors wereused in every important military and aerospace eort from the rstTelstar to Viking, the Apollo moon landing, the Patriot missile, andthe Mir and Internaonal Space Staons.
The market for capacitors covers a large and diverse group of originalequipment manufacturers (OEMs), electronics manufacturingservices (EMS) providers, and electronics distributors around theworld.
For KEMET Portugal, the main area of experse, has been telecomand automove segment, including safety applicaons as ABS orairbags.
KEMET Electronics Portugal, SA, is a 100% subsidiary company fromthe US Company KEMET Corporaon that manufactures TantalumCapacitors Surface Mounted Devices with MnO2 and Polymercounter-electrodes and more recently Aluminum electrolyccapacitors.
The plant is located in vora, south of Portugal and had the ocialopening at 4th September 1998. In April 2012 KEMET Portugalexpanded the range of experse starng up with aluminumelectrolyc capacitors technology, with the introducon of a snap-in line followed shortly by a screw terminal line, being actually infast ramp up.
Solid Tantalum SMD Capacitors
Solid Ta capacitors are one of KEMET s main products, produced in Portugal with MnO2 and conducve polymercathode technology.
Surface mount technology tantalum capacitors keep beingused in new circuit designs due to their volumetric eciency, basic reliability and process compability.
The steady-state and dynamic reliability of a Ta capacitor areinuenced by several factors under the control of the circuitdesign engineer, such as voltage derang, ripple currentand voltage condions, maximum operang temperatureand circuit impedance, as the electrical characteriscs aredetermined by its structure, and are very dependent ondesign and materials.
As part of KEMET strategy, vora plant is developing projectsto start mass producon of high reliable solid Ta capacitorsfor Military and Aerospace industries, including the EuropeanSpace.
Aluminum Electrolyc Capacitors
The aluminum electrolyc capacitor consists basically of twofoils interleaved with an absorbent paper wound ghtly into
a cylinder. Their main advantage is the high capacitance perunit volume due to its internal construcon which consists ofa very thin dielectric layer and large eecve surface area.
The reliability, low cost and wide selecon of package size andcombinaon of properes, have made them the starng pointfor capacitor selecon in many applicaons.

Founded in 2003, Omnidea is an SME performing R&D in Spaceapplicaons and energy concepts. Strategy focuses on technologyownership and tailor-made soluons. Main facilies are in Lisbon,PT.
Our team is made of engineers and sciensts, with workexperience in presgious instuons such as ESA, VW, or EC/FPprograms.
Omnidea is an exporng company, whose revenues now reachalmost 1Mn/year. Having ESA as the preferred partner andclient, other clients include Astrium, Magna Steyr, Swedish SpaceCorporaon while partners include EDP, MCG Automove, Rappand Lankhorst Euronete.
INNOVGAS
Due to very high launch costs, storage of Xe and He forsatellite propulsion, is complex and expensive, mandanglight pressure vessels and high storage pressures. INNOVGASaims to replace the tanium liner in COPV, with space gradealuminum, providing almost similar performance at half thecost, by using innovave producon methods capable ofproducing the desired shape in a single operaon and withoutstructural welds.
ENERGON
The sharp increase in atmospheric CO2 creates useopportunies for this gas such as recycling, deemedunaracve before the current emission restricons and highfuel prices. Electrochemical reducon of CO2 into energydense hydrocarbons is possible and has been demonstrated, with a real possibility for usage in baery substuon bystoring energy as hydrocarbons. Successful system integraonis now the challenge at Omnidea.
BOREAS
Although satellites are the preferred choice for EO, Telecomand Navigaon tasks, high altude plaorms allow muchhigher image resoluon at lower costs and can replace
terrestrial base staons, in remote areas, through on-boardcommunicaon equipment. Using a hybrid (buoyancy plusdynamic li) tethered plaorm, this technology lis muchlarger payloads while oering unrivalled endurance, remainingairborne and under staon keeping condions, for severalweeks.
