2. PotentiallyExplosiveCompoundsInformationApotentiallyexplosivecompound(PEC)maybedefinedasanychemicalcompoundormechanicalmixturethat,whensubjectedtoheat,impact,friction,detonation,orothersuitableinitiation,undergoesrapidchemicalchange,evolvinglargevolumesofhighlyheatedvaporsandgasesthatexertpressureonthesurroundingmedium,possiblyleadingtoacatastrophicfailureofthevessel.
Beforeusingthepotentiallyexplosivecompounddeterminewhatistheinitiatingmechanismortriggerthatcouldleadtoanexplosion;thiscouldbefriction,pressure,impact,light,orheat.Thisknowledgewillbeakeyindetermininghowtohandlethechemical.RefertotheSDSofyourcompoundtodeterminepotentialtriggerstoavoid.Note:Mostexplosionsoccurwhilepurifyingordistillingmixtures.IfyouareplanningonisolatingorpurifyingPECs,pleaserefertotheIsolatingPECsSOP.
3. PotentialHazards/Toxicity
ThedangerofPECsarisesfromlacerationsduetoshrapnel(metal,glass,ceramic,etc.)andburnsduetofiresthatmightaccompanyorfollowtheexplosion.
PECsmayalsopresentadditionalhazardssuchascorrosivity,toxicity,pyrophoricity,orwaterreactivity.Safeuserequiresassessingallpotentialhazards.
ItisthePrincipal Investigator’s responsibility toensureactivity-specific laboratoryproceduresand/orprocessesaretakenintoaccountwhenusingthisChemicalClassSOP.
Please,reviewtheSDSofanychemicalbeforeuse(seeSection11–SDSLocation).
Anexplosionmightalsoleadtoexposuretootherhazardouschemicals.SeetheappropriateSOPsandSDSsforanyotherchemicalsusedintandemwithPECstodetermineifthereisthepotentialofexposuretotoxicchemicals.
4. EngineeringControlsLab-specificinformationonengineeringcontrolsmaybeincludedintheProtocol/Proceduresection.
ThefollowingisthesetofengineeringcontrolsrequiredwhenhandlingPECs:
• WorkinaproperlyfunctioningchemicalfumehoodwhenhandlingPECs.Workwiththesashaslowaspossible.
• Whenthefumehoodsashdoesnotprovideadequateprotection,useaportableblastshield,insidethehood.
• Whenworkingoutsideofafumehood,aportableblastshieldmustbeused.• LaboratoriesandroomswherePECsareusedmusthavegeneralroomventilationthatis
negativepressurewithrespecttothecorridorsandexternalenvironment.Thelaboratory/roomdoormustbekeptclosedatalltimes.
