INTRODUCTION
With hostile weather conditions battering Australia over the six months to December 2010,
there is no doubt that the nation’s agriculture industry struggled through a tough end to
2010. Figures released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), highlights the
performance of our agricultural sector over the past three years.
According to the ABS, the value of agricultural commodities produced within Australia has
softened marginally over the past three years. Representing an estimated national fi gure
of just under $39.5 billion ($39,472 million) through the 2009 to 2010 twelve months, the
production of agricultural commodities has declined 11% from the 2007 to 2008 twelve
months fi gure of just over $44.5 billion ($44,581 million). Victoria remains the primary
contributor to the nation’s agriculture sector, accounting for 25.2% or $9.95 billion of the
$39.5 billion industry. This was followed by Queensland and New South Wales, which
contributed a further $9.15 billion and $8.44 billion respectively.
