But the show isn’t quite over yet. Across corporate America, costly checks are still being issued for everything from paying employees, to paying pensions, to bills. This is surprising when you consider the many disadvantages of checks:
• An average administrative cost of $6 or more per issued check.1 (The cost can be much higher when check disbursement isn’t part of an automated process)
• The administrative inefficiencies associated with checks (including the scope for error and waste)
• The cost to overnight checks to retail or satellite locations
• Their snail-like speed
• The expense of replacing them if lost or stolen
• The fraud risk
• The many inconveniences for receivers – including: Having to pick up checks or wait for them in the mail; time-consuming bank visits to cash them; annoying cashing fees; the inability to shop online with cash

Cutting out cutting checks in favor of a prepaid solution can be a straightforward process. But there’s a list of things to do to make sure your program is successful:
1. Take inventory of all the instances you issue checks. Then figure out an alternative payment solution for each. You’ll probably find prepaid suits many, if not all of them. A practical step could be to list all your check-disbursement channels. You might end up with a list that looks like this:

2. Establish goals and success criteria for a new disbursement program.
3. Communicate the benefits of your new program to everyone in the company. For procurement, the main benefit might be working with a single trusted vendor instead of numerous vendors providing check-cutting services. For finance, the lure might primarily be cost and resource savings. For HR, there’s the attraction and retention of personnel. For sales, the chance to please existing customers and win new ones.
4. Choose a prepaid solution provider with scale and experience, as well as an understanding of prepaid-specific fraud together with the systems and processes to combat it.
5. Work in conjunction with your disbursement partner to ensure payees receive the most efficient and economical prepaid product.
6. Educate employees about how to optimize benefits and avoid paying fees to access cash.
7. Federal and state laws can be complex. Work with a partner that understands the regulatory and compliance landscape, and can provide appropriate ongoing guidance.
8. Communicate to payment recipients why, how and when you are changing their payment method. Clear communication will mitigate uncertainty and inform stakeholders of benefits.

Checks are on their way out. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. But companies will have to stop issuing them in the near future. Meanwhile, prepaid solutions are just getting started.
And they’re already extremely popular with young adults. When mobile and prepaid become fully integrated, expect the appetite for prepaid to go through the roof.
