With the recent ice storm many of us have had the chance to unfortunately test just how prepared we were for what was hopefully a once in a lifetime ice storm. With that being said, we are very likely to suffer another long term power outage at some point, hopefully not for some time, perhaps not even for years. While it is nice we don’t have to worry about this regularly, the longer we go between major outages the easier it is to forget about being prepared.
We did not publish an article on the original ice storm for a couple of reasons. We were trying to get through it on our own as we were just a few hours out of power short of not being able to print at all that week, and a reminder article like this is probably more helpful than many photos of the destruction most saw firsthand.
If you were like us and your generator wouldn’t start, then you’ve probably looked into either servicing it yourself or getting it looked at by a professional. We know we aren’t the only ones to count on a rarely used small engine to work when it’s sup-posed to only for it to not when we needed it the most. Unfortunately, these types of things need regular service even if you rarely use them. When it’s pitch black and your phone is at 10% power and the freez-ing rain is pouring down, it’s not a good time to figure out what is wrong with your small engine and what would take to get it running again. With that being said, if your generator worked as you expected it to, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work the next time if you aren’t going to touch it un-til the next outage. When was the last time
you changed the spark plugs? The oil? Have you checked the clean air filter? There are many things that need to be checked and checked regularly. Running for a few minutes with a load every few months will ensure it’s going to work when you need it. It’s also very important to not store gas in the generator for months on end.
It’s often recommended you should always be prepared for 72hrs on your own, but what exactly do you need? Sure that case of water you got last week may be enough to drink for a few days, but if you’re using it for washing and preparing food it’s going to go a lot faster than you think. It is recom-mended to keep at least a gallon per person in the house per day for 72 hours. If you put new batteries in your flashlights and other battery powered devices, it’s a good idea to restock so you have some extras at home. The same goes for your

candles - better to have a few extra than none at all. A battery powered lantern will make reading a book much easier on your eyes than a couple of emergency candles. A battery powered radio is a good idea, especially if you do not have a generator, but a small phone battery char-ger would also be a good idea so you can follow weather forecasts, check for updates and of course play your mobile games. Most people do have lighters or match-es somewhere, but if you don’t use them regularly and don’t remember when you last bought them, it might be a good idea to get some new ones.
You’re probably not going to starve even if power failures drag on for days, but you might get tired of peanut but-ter sandwiches. Keep some extra canned goods and other non-perishable food that you actually enjoy eating and don’t get stuck with whatever you don’t deem worthy of cooking on a regular day. If you do keep special food in case of emergency remember to periodically replace. Canned goods do not last forever.
Don’t forget about your pets. If you’re on a schedule buying their food, make sure you always have a few days supply in case you are unable to leave. Even if you’re not barbequing for many months of the year, it’s a good idea to keep some propane on hand, or even a small camping stove so you can still enjoy a hot meal.
While the main purpose of us publishing this is so you can be prepared for a worst case scenario, that doesn’t have to mean just making it through.
Hopefully it will be a long time before we experience another long outage, the longest we heard about was 153 hours (almost a week!). There are some simple things we can do to make these annoyances more tolerable. It’s best to think about that now, rather then when the next outage happens and you can really never be too pre-pared.
Take a mornnig off and get out of the house!Enjoy the warm company of friends and family

Creature Feature
Blue Jay
These gorgeous blue and white birds stand out whether in the dead of winter feeding on nuts and acorns and consuming all of the bird seed you put out into your feeder in a matter of moments, or creating such a ruckus with their noisy calls when predators are in their sight.
Blue jays are in the same family as crows and ravens, and are exceptionally smart, sometimes captive blue jays have been spotted using “tools” to retrieve food. They can mimic the sounds hawks make, especially red shouldered hawks, presumably to see whether or not one is in the area.
Blue jays, and other blue and green hued birds and among other things such as flowers and butterflies, are blue not because of pigment but because of the structure of their feathers. This is called structural colouration. The microscopic structure and tiny air pockets in the bird’s feathers scatter incoming light which produces the blue hue we see with our eyes. If you were to crush or back-light a blue jay feather, the blue colour would disappear and the brown colour of the feather produced by the melanin would be shown.
