SIWESThe Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a
skills development programme initiated by the Industrial Training
Fund (ITF), in 1973 to bridge the gap between theory and practice
among students of engineering and technology. It provides for on-
the-job practical experience for students as they are exposed to
work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery that may not be available in their Institutions.
•provide students the opportunity to test their interest in a
particular career before permanent commitments are made.
•students will develop skills in the application of theory to
practical work situations.
•will increase a student's sense of responsibility.
•To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to
meet after graduation

Kopek Construction Limited is a part of The ZARD group of
companies based in Ibadan, Oyo State of Nigeria. The group has
strong roots in different business areas like, Manufacturing,
Distribution, Construction, Packaging, Farming, Live stock,
Furniture, Education etc.,
Kopek Construction Limited was established in 1987, specialized in
roads and bridges construction and has about 40 professional and
2,500 non-professional staff.
Engaged in Road construction for the Government, World Bank
and other international organizations.
Presently they are working on :
Rehabilitation of 67km Ilesha to Akure road using Geotextile.
Construction of 6 km road in Ado- ekiti
Construction of ife, State of Osun.

ASPHALT SECTION
This section deals with the production of Asphalt overlay and
laying of Asphalt cement.
Production of Asphalt concrete:
Material used: different sizes of aggregates, stone dust, filler and bitumen as the binder
Process Description:First, aggregates travels through the cold feed bins,
where initial proportioning of the aggregates takes
place, The aggregate is then sent to a drier, where the
moisture is removed and is heated in the pug mill. It
continues to the hot elevator by screens to the hot
bins. The screens provide the final separation of the
aggregate. The aggregate is dropped into the pug mill
for mixing with the bitumen. The mixture is then
dropped into a waiting truck or moved to a storage
silo.

LAYING OF ASPHALT OVERLAY USING REINFORCEMENT.
First in the laying of the Asphalt, after the sub base has
been compacted, primed with bitumen emulsion, and
blinded. It will be opened to traffic for at least 24 hours
after which asphalt concrete can be placed on it. The
first step that was taken in laying of asphalt is to use a
sweeper, to sweep away all the blinding and dirt’s on
the surface we want to place the asphalt and then the
bitumen tanker spray bitumen emulsion at a spray rate
of 0.9 sq/m which the spraying will be monitored by
the laboratory technician, the bitumen will be allowed
to dry for some minutes then the binder asphalt
(asphalt with larger aggregates) will be placed on it at
a temperature ranging from 120°C to 140°C then it
will be compacted at a temperature of about 90°C, then
it will be open to traffic for about 24 hours before
laying the final layer wearing course.(Engr. Agboola

Bitumen is the first applied layer used to protect and stabilize the surface of the
base. We make use of Bitumen Emulsion .
The maximum amount to be applied between 0.9 and 2.3 l/m2
The temperature of the asphalt concrete leaving the plant should not be less
than 135°C nor more than 163°C

1. Adequate compaction of asphalt is essential to ensure the mix
design performance expected service life and required density is
achieved.

The industrial training has helped me with the basic practical and
theoretical knowledge that I may not have gotten from the lecture
room. It also gave me the opportunity to have a feel of what it would be
like after graduation when I start working.
After my internship with Kopek Construction Company:
• I can effectively carry out a borrow pit test on any site to determine
the suitability of the soil.
• I can effectively assist in laying of Asphalt concrete with the use of
Geo-synthetics.
• I can easily identify different types of heavy duty machines used in
construction.
