Since its formation in 2001, Novalima has been breakingdown boundaries, uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres,communitiesandgenerationstocreateaninspiringmovement

thathasrevolutionizedthemusicsceneintheirnativePeru.FoundedbyfourfriendsfromLimawithasharedpassionforbothtraditionalAfro-PeruvianmusicandmodernDJculture,Novalimasearches forthe common ground between past and future, between traditionand innovation. Their efforts have also helped bridge the dividebetweenthePeruvianmainstreamandtheAfro-Peruviancommunity,aminoritypopulationthathasstruggledagainstdiscriminationandthethreatofculturaldissolutionforgenerations.

Whiletheirsoundisfuturisticandcutting-edge,therootsofNoval-ima’smusic stretchback hundreds of years to the times of slaveryandSpanishcolonialrule.Inafar-too-familiartale,AfricanslaveswerebroughttoPeruasearlyasthe1500suntilthemiddleofthe19thCen-tury,establishinganoutpostofAfricancultureinSouthAmerica.Overtheyears,thesoulandrhythmsofAfricablendedwiththemelodiesandinstrumentsofEuropeandtheAndes.TheresultisrichmusicalrepertoirethathasexistedforgenerationsontheperipheryofPeru-vianpopularculture.

In1995,AmericanpopstarDavid ByrneintroducedtheworldtothetreasuresofAfro-PeruvianmusicwithacompilationCDentitledThe Soul of Black Peru. Thecollection helped giveinternational recognitionto Afro-Peruvian iconsSusana Baca,Eva Ayllón,Chabuca Granda, Nicó-medes Santa Cruz andothers, while sparking arenewed interest back inPeru for a musical scenethathadoftenbeenover-lookedbythebroaderso-ciety.

The founders of Novali-ma,Ramon Perez-Prieto,Grimaldo Del Solar,Rafa-el Morales, andCarlos Li Carrillo, became friendswhile in high school inLima.Thechildrenof art-ists and intellectuals, Ra-mon,Grimaldo,RafaelandCarloswerewell-educatedandwelltrav-eled,andwhiletheygrewuplisteningtothepopularandfolkmusicofLatinAmerica,theyalsosharedafascinationforrock,pop,reggae,salsa,danceandelectronicmusic.

Indeed,withoutmoderntechnology,Novalimamightnothavedevel-oped,asthegroupcametogetheratatimewhenthefourfounderswereeachlivingindifferentpartsoftheworld.FromtheirhomesinLondon,Barcelona,HongKongandLima,theystartedemailingsongideastoeachother.Theselong-distanceexperimentsresultedintheir2002debutalbum,theself-titledNovalima.

The reception to the album exceeded their wildest expectations,eventuallyreachingplatinumsalesstatusinPeru,andfortheirnextalbum they invited more Afro-Peruvian musicians to join their re-cordingsessions.TheoutcomewasAfro,analbumthatwasreleasedworldwidein2006totremendousacclaimandputNovalimaontheinternationalmusicmap.TheLondonMetro Evening Standardraved,“NovalimahasmorethansucceededinbringingthespiritandsoulofPeruvianbluesintothe21stcentury.”Afroheldthe#1spotontheUS

The foundersofNovalimahavesince returned toLimaand invitedsomeoftheirfavoriteAfro-Peruvianmusicianstobecomepermanentmembersoftheirband:Juan Medrano Cotito,Mangüe Vasquez,Mi-lagros GuerreroandMarcos Mosquera,aswellasConstantino Alva-rez,arenownedlocaldrummer&percussionist.

The partnership between the original cosmopolitan quartet andmembersoftheAfro-Peruviancommunityhasgeneratedagreatdealofattentionathome,mostlybecausethedividebetweenblackandwhiteinPeruhasmadethesetypesofcollaborationsunfortunatelyrare.AJanuary2008articleintheChristian Science MonitorfocusedonthewaysinwhichNovalimawasintroducinganewgenerationtoAfro-Peruvianculture,asserting,“Byupdatingtraditionalblackmusic,Novalimaisbridgingracialdivides insidePeru.”Whilethissocial im-pactwasnotnecessarilytheirintentionattheoutset,themembersofNovalimacherishtheuncommonfriendshipsthathavedevelopedthroughplayingmusicwithpeopleofdifferentethnicandeconomicbackgrounds. Ontheirnewalbum,Coba Coba,Novalimaexpandsonthecritically-acclaimed formula theydevelopedwith their twoprevious record-

ings, while taking their in-spiring fusion in new andexciting directions. The al-bum’s title is derived fromanAfro-Peruvianexpressionused to incite musicians,much like shouting“Go forit!”or“Takeit!”toamusicianinthemidstofagreatsolo.

On Coba Coba, Novalimadelves further into theAfri-can roots of Afro-Peruvianmusic,bringing in influenc-es from itsmusical cousinsreggae,dub, salsa,hip-hop,afrobeat and Cuban son.They take a more organicapproach this time around,and the songs more accu-rately reflect the livesoundoftheband,thankstotime

spentworkingtogetherasanactualbandratherthanastudioproj-ect.SpecialguestsincludeNewZealandnujazzkeyboardistMark de Clive Lowe,thepopularCubanhip-hopgroupObsesiónandSpanishalternativerockerGecko Turner.BritishproducerToni Economides,aregularcollaboratorofNitin Sawhney,Da Lata,Bugz in the Atticand4Heroamongothers,addshisspecialtouchonthealbum’smixes.
