June 2015
Presidents Message June has arrived in all its glory with flowering shrubs showing off a regalia of colours. What a spectacular time in the Comox Valley! The warmth and sunshine has beckoned many of us into the garden, onto the bike paths and water-ways, or even to one of the beaches for B-B-Q’s. Some of our spring cleaning in the sewing room has yielded a plethora of projects that have been tucked away for months and are now begging to be finished; just in time for some summer sewing. It’s a good thing that the Guild is open and run-ning all summer long! Taking a break from the garden, the grandkids, or the myriad of summer visitors is often just what we need and a few hours sewing with friends at the guild provides just such a break. I hope to see many of you taking advantage of a summer break over the next few months! Don’t forget the CVEx quilt show would love to show off some of your work; perhaps even an en-try into their special 100
th anniversary challenge!
We have had a busy year with interesting chal-lenge groups, workshops and special projects always on the go. The executive has appreciated your many words of encouragement as well as your support of the various activities happening around the guild. It is through participation that we are able to meet wonderful new friends, gain knowledge of many new sewing techniques and stretch our quilting world horizons.
As you enjoy all the adventures summer has in store for you, keep in mind how you might contribute to the guild come fall; there is a place for everyone!
“Works in progress- even dozens of
them- are a good thing. It’s life!” Anna Maria Horner

Committee Heads The executive would appreciate your year end reports covering the period of
September 2014 to June 2015.
This report should include the budget for that budget period and should be sub-
mitted to the treasurer by the June GM or June 15 2015 at the latest.
Thank you
Your Executive...
Please remember that we are a fragrance free location and respect the health of others,
not just at our General Meeting but every Thursday… it is not just perfume but also hair
and body products that affect those who are sensitive to scents.
On meeting nights please either put your cell on vibrate or turn the ringer off as this is
distracting to those attending and presiding at the meeting.

Book Review Two books by Yoko Saito:
1. House Warming Patchwork
Interweave Press 2013
Guild library # 524
2. New Classic Patchwork
Interweave Press 2014
Guild library # 525
Yoko Saito is a name very familiar among Japanese
quilters and is becoming a 'household' name else-
where in the world. She has recently published a
book, "Scandinavian quilts". Saito regularly appears on Japanese tv and if you wish
to look up her website, here it is: www.shop.quilt.co.jp
The above books are good representatives of Saito's work. She explores traditional
folk themes and interprets them with a vintage, yet modern feel. "House Warming"
includes original block designs ranging from traditional quilting motifs (stars, bas-
kets, flowers) to whimsical subjects (animals insects, robots). You may use these
blocks for your own creations or use them in one of the 10 projects in the book.
The color palette used in her work is limited to soft sepia and taupe fabrics (not nec-
essarily cottons!) along with pastels and colors with underlying grey tones. This
creates very restful results which appeal to a wide ranging audience. These books
are not merely blocks and projects (patterns included), but teaching aids for her
techniques. As well as traditional patchwork designs she includes applique, ma-
chine and hand stitching, as well as hand embroidery. Be aware of how the colors
play off one another without 'jarring' our perception of the project. Projects include
smaller projects - baskets, tote bags, purses, boxes, business card holders and
'pouches'. (Continued on page 5)

Saito uses beautiful and meticulous stitching while still embracing the "wabi sabi"
concept of imperfection. This consists of using odd shaped pieces or a bit of dif-
ferent fabrics added into the background (eg. the letter 'D' in "House Warm-
ing"). If you follow her lead, you will stray from conventional designs and create
one-of-a-kind quilts and quilted projects.
Current Japanese quilters begin quilting while attending quilt schools. These can
be small private classes or quilt classes in community or cultural centres. Japan
Handicraft Instructor's Assn. has established it's own licencing system and pro-
duces certified quilt instructors. This licence entails attending various courses for
150 hours over a two year period, and, to become an advanced instructor, even
further studies over eighteen months while working with a particular teacher, is
required. Yoko Saito is an instructor with Quilt Juku. This organization offers in-
tensive quilt seminars taught by leading quilt artists with their own unique styles.
Because patchwork quilting was established in a short period of time, many
quilters imitated American style quilting. There is now a tendency to view quilt-
ing from a Japanese point of view, hence the popularity of instructors such as
Yoko Saito. Smaller quilts, bags and purses seem to be most popular among Japa-
nese quilters, likely due to limited quilting space in their homes. It is difficult to
pin down exactly what makes the work of Yoko Saito so unique - perhaps her lim-
ited use of colors and how she uses her patterns in the projects included in each
book? The results, however, are soothing, seem timeless and would likely fit the
décor of almost any North American home.

CAMP HOMEWOOD RETREAT We would like to inform you of dates for our next two Camp Homewood retreats. The next
retreat is October 22nd – 25th, 2015 with sign-up at the June business meeting. We also have
confirmed dates for our first 2016 retreat which are February 18th - 21st, 2016.
The cost per individual ranges from $161. to $201., depending on the room you choose. The
starting range of $161 is a bunk style dorm room which sleeps up to 7, however on average
there are usually anywhere from 3 – 5 in these rooms. Individuals in these rooms have
shared bathroom/shower facilities. There is a separate handicapped washroom available to
any that may require ease of access to toilet or shower. There are also newer rooms available
which sleep up to 3 and have their own washroom, including shower/tub. These rooms are
either $187 with 3 sharing the room or $201 with only 2 sharing. All prices include 3 meals a
day along with snacks in the evening consisting of cookies/squares, fruit, coffee, tea, and hot
chocolate. The meals at Camp Homewood are excellent . . . and you will never walk away
hungry!
In you have never been to a retreat at Camp Homewood we urge you to give it a try. It is a
lot of fun and a great way to get to know your fellow quilters. Most quilters who have at-
tended previous retreats become regulars. If you wish to sign-up or for further information
please contact one of the retreat coordinators listed below.
We look forward to seeing some new members as well as all of our regulars at one of the up-
coming retreats.

This brings back memories. In Canada, Maple Leaf Mills packed their Cream Of The West flour in 98 pound patterned bags until about 1950. There were about eight different patterns. In 1944 I began working Saturdays in a farm supply outlet. Sometimes a farm wife would point to a bag near or at the bottom of a pile and explain that the print design was the one she needed to finish making an item she had started. It was part of the learning process that the customer is queen or king. Submitted by Careen with permission from the author
1930’s flour sacks
BY COLLEEN B. HUBERT
IN THAT LONG AGO TIME WHEN THINGS WERE SAVED,
WHEN ROADS WERE GRAVELED AND BARRELS WERE STAVED,
WHEN WORN-OUT CLOTHING WAS USED AS RAGS,
AND THERE WERE NO PLASTIC WRAP OR BAGS,
AND THE WELL AND THE PUMP WERE WAY OUT BACK,
A VERSITILE ITEM, WAS THE FLOUR SACK.
PILLSBURY'S BEST, MOTHER'S AND GOLD MEDAL, TOO
STAMPED THEIR NAMES PROUDLY IN PURPLE AND BLUE.
THE STRING SEWN ON TOP WAS PULLED AND KEPT;
THE FLOUR EMPTIED AND SPILLS WERE SWEPT.
THE BAG WAS FOLDED AND STORED IN A SACK
THAT DURABLE, PRACTICAL FLOUR SACK.
THE SACK COULD BE FILLED WITH FEATHERS AND DOWN,
FOR A PILLOW, OR T'WOULD MAKE A NICE SLEEPING GOWN.
IT COULD CARRY A BOOK AND BE A SCHOOL BAG,
OR BECOME A MAIL SACK SLUNG OVER A NAG.
IT MADE A VERY CONVENIENT PACK,
THAT ADAPTABLE, COTTON FLOUR SACK.
BLEACHED AND SEWN, IT WAS DUTIFULLY WORN
AS BIBS, DIAPERS, OR KERCHIEF ADORNED.
IT WAS MADE INTO SKIRTS, BLOUSES AND SLIPS.

FROM THAT HUMBLE BUT TREASURED FLOUR SACK!
AS A STRAINER FOR MILK OR APPLE JUICE,
TO WAVE MEN IN, IT WAS A VERY GOOD USE,
AS A SLING FOR A SPRAINED WRIST OR A BREAK,
TO HELP MOTHER ROLL UP A JELLY CAKE,
AS A WINDOW SHADE OR TO STUFF A CRACK,
WE USED A STURDY, COMMON FLOUR SACK!
AS DISH TOWELS, EMBROIDERED OR NOT,
THEY COVERED UP DOUGH, HELPED PASS PANS SO HOT,
TIED UP DISHES FOR NEIGHBORS IN NEED,
AND FOR MEN OUT IN THE FIELD TO SEED.
THEY DRIED DISHES FROM PAN, NOT RACK
THAT ABSORBENT, HANDY FLOUR SACK!
WE POLISHED AND CLEANED STOVE AND TABLE,
SCOURED AND SCRUBBED FROM CELLAR TO GABLE,
WE DUSTED THE BUREAU AND OAK BED POST,
MADE COSTUMES FOR OCTOBER (A SCARY GHOST)
AND A PARACHUTE FOR A CAT NAMED JACK.
FROM THAT LOWLY, USEFUL OLD FLOUR SACK!
SO NOW MY FRIENDS, WHEN THEY ASK YOU
AS CURIOUS YOUNGSTERS OFTEN DO,
"BEFORE PLASTIC WRAP, ELMERS GLUE
AND PAPER TOWELS, WHAT DID YOU DO?"
TELL THEM LOUDLY AND WITH PRIDE DON'T LACK,
"GRANDMOTHER HAD THAT WONDERFUL FLOUR SACK!"
All these girls' dresses were made from flour sacks.

quilt or a large bed size quilt. The workshop is available at the OAP hall from 10 am to 4 pm.
Nancy's method utilizes templates and the arcs of the wedding ring are machine appliquéd
onto a background.
Cost of the workshop is $51.00 and this includes your own templates.
There will be pictures and a sample of the project at the June meeting. Sign up will commence
at the June meeting!

Comox Valley Exhibition (CVEx) Quilt Show August 28, 29 and 30, 2015
Theme ‘100 Fair Years’ The Entry Book for the Exhibition is available in May. Entry forms for the Quilt Show will be available at the June meeting and Thursday Quilt Days through to August. Also, the Volunteer Sign Up sheet is available at the Meeting and will be visible until August. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) neither Margaret nor I will be available at the June meeting because we are at Quilt Canada in Lethbridge but Marilyn will be able to answer any questions you might have. Schoolhouse Quilters has always been supportive of the CVEx Quilt Show, both in the Volunteer aspect and in the number of quilt entries. Thank you in advance for your help.
