1.2 Agenda
Notes:
In today’s session, we will start with an introduction to Primo Views. We will see how to access the Views List in the Configure Views area in Primo VE. Then, we will walk through the creation and customization of a view, starting with its General Attributes, then moving on to see how the Links Menu and Search Profile Slots are configured. We’ll see how Advanced Search, the Brief Results, and the Full Record displays are configured as well. And lastly, we’ll see where the View is branded in the Manage Customization Package area.

The View in Primo defines everything we want to show the patron, and it’s where they can conduct searches,
retrieve results, and access materials.
This is the default View before any searches have been conducted. At the top we have our logo, the Main Menu,
and My account area. The search bar is prominently displayed on the page, with the option to go to an Advanced
Search. And then the content of the page is below that - by default, we have some explanatory text and links to get
help or provide feedback.
Once I start typing in a search, the search box dynamically displays a list of search options that I can use to target
my search. And once the search results are retrieved, I can see a list of relevancy ranked results. Each result has a
brief display, with an icon or book jacket, the resource type, the item’s title, creator, publisher, and so on. Each
result also has a few services associated with it as well, whether it’s to form a permalink to the record, to email the
citation, pin it to your favorites, or more.
And to the side of the results we have the Facets, where we can tweak, or refine, our results and based on
conditions like availability, subject, author, library, location, and more.
Clicking on the title of the brief result brings us to the full record display, where we can see more information about
the item in the Details section, and links to additional information about the record in the Links section. While there
are more sections in this full display, in this session we’ll be focusing on those that are customized in the view’s
configuration.

1.5 Introduction
Notes:
It’s possible to have more than one view per institution - for example, one institution might have a test view, a demo
view, and a production view. Or perhaps there are multiple libraries that would want to have their own views.
Each view is defined in the URL with the parameter VID=. Then there is the Alma institution, a colon, and then the
View Code.
Let’s create a new view and see where this code is defined.

To configure Views, go to the Alma Menu > Discovery > Display Configuration > Configure Views.
1.8 Views List
Notes:
Clicking on Configure Views brings us to the Views List. In this case, we have a few Views already defined. From
here we can see the View Code for each view, and the name and description of the view. We can indic ate which
view is the default view for the institution here.
The default view is the view that is used to see the record in Primo when Alma staff use the "Display in Discovery"
link.
There are several actions available for each view we can edit the existing view, duplicate it, or delete it. The
Override option lets us replace the view with a different view, acting as a redirect to the new view. And the Go to
View option links directly to the user interface of that view.
In this session, we will be adding a new view to our list.

1.9 Adding a View
Notes:
Once I’ve clicked Add, I’m brought to the View Configuration’s initial page. Here we define the view by entering in a
code, a name, and a description. We can also choose to affiliate this view with a campus or library.
Remember that the View Code is used to form the URL of the View. In this case, we’re in the PRIMO_OAP_INST
institution, and we’re using the view code JC_TEST, so our URL is going to look like this.
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
Next, we determine the general attributes of the view. The default language for this view will be English. The Time-
out URL determines where the user goes after they log out of their session, or if they let their session idle long
enough to time-out. The side-bar includes the Tweak my results section - it’s possible to set the side bar to appear
on the left or the right of the screen. We can also enable auto-complete here, and set this view as the default view.
I can click the Views List to go back to the View without saving, or I can click Save to save it before returning to the
Views list.
Let’s click Save and Continue to move on to the next screen in the View Configuration.

1.11 General Attributes
Notes:
Just after I add and save the view, I am brought to a similar Views Configuration screen, with the attributes I just
defined still on the page. But notice the View Code is now fixed - we can no longer edit it, and now there are a
number of tabs at the top. If I were to go back to the Views List and edit the View, this is the screen that appears.
Here in the General tab, we can change anything but the View code itself.
Let’s move on to the Links Menu tab.
.

1.12 Links Menu

Links Menu
1.13 Links Menu
Notes:
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
The Links Menu tab contains a list of the links that are visible in the View.
Each of the links defined here is active. The Label determines what displays in the View, and the URL is either a full
URL or calling on a pre-existing function to link to that content.
In the user interface, we can see these links at the top of the screen. When there are more links than space in the
area, the View shows an ellipses that we can click on to see all of them.
Back in the View Configuration, I’m going to customize my links. The first time I customize this menu, I would click
on the Customize button - but I only need to do this once. Now when I come back to this page, I’ll be able to make
changes without this additional step.
By clicking on the mark in the active column, I can disable a few of the links so that they will no longer display. If I
want to change the Label on one of the links, I would click Edit, which would bring me to a new screen, and then I
could change the label and save.
Back in the list of links, I can see the label now reads New Search. It’s possible to restore the l ist of links to its
original settings, and it’s also possible to add more links if desired. Some of the links, such as browse, have
additional configuration options available for editing.
After making these changes, we can see them in the user interface. Notice that I no longer see the ellipses because
I have fewer links, and the label for Library Search is now New Search.

1.14 Search Profile Slots
Notes:
Search Profile Slots
1.15 Search Profiles and Search Profile Slots
Notes:
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
Previously in the Search Profiles training session, we explored how Search Profiles are configured, and what scopes
are. In this session, we will see how these Search Profiles are used to populate Search Profile Slots in the Configure
Views area.
Search Profiles are groups of records used to search. Search Profiles contain at least one scope - or group of
records that meets specific conditions. Several search profiles can be configured for an institution - for example we
could have a search profile for the entire repository, a library, a collection, and more.
Search Profile Slots are configured in the Configure Views area of Primo VE. Search Slots are used to narrow down
or target searches in the user interface. In other words, they allow you to divide the data search into different
sections in a Primo View. Search slots are visible to the user when they start typing their query. Search Slots can
contain one or more search profiles, and the Primo View can contain one or more search profi le slots.
Let’s see a few examples.
1.16 Example – Single search profile in a slot
Notes:
In our first example, the Search Profile Slots appear in the initial search when the user types in their search terms.
After the results return, it’s possible to see the search slots in the drop down at the end of the search box. In this
example, we have the Everything search slot selected, and it has only one search profile in it.
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
Our next example shows how multiple search profiles appear when they are in a search slot. Here we have
selected the Libraries search slot. If we click on the down arrow, we could see the other search slots. However with
the Libraries search slot, we have multiple search profiles - the Main Library search profile, the Graduate Library
search profile, and so on.
Let’s take a look at how this was configured in the view.
Example – Multiple Search Profiles (Slide Layer)
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
1.17 Search Profile Slots
Notes:
The Search Profile Slots tab contains the configurations that determine how the search options appear in the View.
By default, we have a few search profile slots already configured; one that contains everything, or the local data and
the Central index, another slot for just the library catalog, a third for just Articles in the Central index, and the last a
course reserves slot. The slots that are active have a mark in the active column. Notice that the only inactive slot is
the course reserves slot.
Here in the user interface, we can see the default slots - Everything, Library Catalog, and Articles. And after the
search is conducted, we can access the search slots again in this drop down. Let’s walk through adding another
search slot for the libraries, as we saw in the previous examples.
Back in the View Configuration, I’ll need to click on the Customize button once, and that will enable me to make
changes to this tab moving forward. Now I can Add a Slot, change the position of the slots in the View using these
arrows, and take actions on existing slots.

1.18 Adding a Search Profile Slot
Notes:
By clicking on Add a Slot, we’re brought to the Define a Slot screen.
First, I would create a code, name, and a Description for this new slot. We are going to create a new search slot that
will allow us to search the collections at individual libraries in my institution.
To do this, we will want to activate the search profiles for each library. These search profiles were defined earlier in
the Display > Search Configuration > Search Profiles area of Primo VE.
Each active profile has a mark next to it. I can change the position of each of the profiles here, and I can cl ick View
to see the scope or scopes that are included in this profile.
Let’s save this Slot. Now we can see the slot in the Search Profile slots list.
Now when we view the search options in the user interface, we can select the Libraries search slot, and then get a
drop-down containing the list of libraries.
Let’s move on to the next tab in the Views Configuration, Advanced Search.

1.20 Advanced Search Configuration
Notes:
The Advanced Search Configuration tab allows us to customize several components of the Advanced Search. We
can select the fields that display in the Any field drop down, the Material Type drop down, and the Language drop
down.
Here in the configuration, we can see the list of indexes that are used in the Any fields drop down. We can also
control which fields display based on the Search Slot. For example, we would not necessarily want to include course
reserve-specific fields in every drop down. These can be customized by clicking on the row actions list. It’s also
possible to change the order of the fields in the drop down by using the arrows to move them up and down. To add
a new field to the list, click on Add index, and a list of available indexes will become available for selection.
The List of Resource Types and Languages can also be configured on this tab.

1.21 Brief Results
Notes:
Brief Results
1.22 Brief Results
Notes:
Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com
The Brief Results configuration allows us to customize components of search results screen. Here we can change
the way the sorting and facets work.
In the Brief Results tab, the first section is devoted to facets configuration. Facets that are currently visible in the
user interface have a mark in the Active column. The Values to Display column determines how many options can
appear under the facet without having to expand it. Here we’ve set the Availability facet to 5, and the rest at zero,
so in the user interface, this is what we see. It’s possible to expand each of the facets by clicking on the teal arrow -
after we do so, it looks like this.
The items within the facet can be sorted several ways. In most cases we’re sorting them by size, but occasionally it
makes more sense to sort by Alphabetical Order. Similar to the Advanced Search Configuration, we can determine
whether or not each Search Profile Slot will have the same set of facets. And we can control the order of the facets
as they appear in the view.
The next section in Brief Display is Sort - here we can activate or deactivate different types of sorting that are
available, and we can control the order in which they appear in the Sort by drop down.
Lastly, we can determine how manifestations of the same work display in the search results. By default, if we
conduct a search and find different versions of the same work, we’ll see a generic record and be prompted to click
on View Versions to see the itemized list. If we select Preferred, however, we will see the record with the most
metadata associated with it as the preferred record. We’ll still see a link to view all versions.

The Brief record display tab allows us to customize the fields and actions that appear for e ach record in the brief
results.
While the number of lines is static, it’s possible to edit each line and add, change or delete the fields that appear.
By clicking on Edit, I can add or edit the delimiters in this line. If I click Add, a popup appears with additional fields.
The next section in the Brief Record Display tab contains the available actions for the record. These include adding
and removing records to the Favorites list, emailing the record, generating a permanent link for the record, creat ing
a citation for the record, and printing it. This is also where the push to actions for various citation managers can be
configured.

In the Full Record, we can customize the order in which each of these elements appear, as well as several of the
sections within the display.
Notice we have a list of the full record services here, along with a description, and the ability to reorder these
elements if desired.
We can also configure the Details, Links, and Citation Trail sections. Let’s see the configuration options for Details
by clicking on Configure.
From here, I can reorder the fields displayed in the Details section, I can use the row action’s list to edit or delete
fields, or I can add a new field for display.
When you click add, you get all the metadata elements that can be used for display. If you have added additional
local fields in the "Manage Local Fields" area, it will be seen here as well and can be added for display.

Notes:
The last tab in the Configure Views is Manage Customization Package. Each view contains its own set of CSS, HTML,
and image files that control the look and feel of the user interface. Since this functionality is covered in a different
training, I’ll just briefly mention that from here we can download the set of files, edit them, and upload the files
again from this tab.
