PROBUS CLUB OF MUSKOKA LAKES
February 2018
Meetings - Third Tuesday of the Month - Bracebridge Rotary Centre
President’s Message
A belated Happy Valentine’s Day. I am writing right now from Toronto where it is +6! I think it is a similar temperature in Muskoka. Maybe spring is not so far away after all! I was sorry to miss January’s General Meeting. I heard good things about the presentation on Chautauqua and rave reviews of Walter Ried’s presentation on his experience navigating by the stars. We were in Huatulco Mexico for a week with my brother and his wife. It was our first time there and it was a pretty interesting place. My brother and I took a Mexican cooking class one day and, not only learned how to make some classic dishes, but also learned about the history and lifestyle of the area. Our teacher had grown up there and was full of stories. It was the first time my brother and I had done anything together for a very long time so that was memorable. The rest of the remaining winter is going to be busy. The March meeting will include a pot luck lunch to celebrate St Patrick’s Day as well as some interesting activities. The Chinese New Year Lunch is next week, the ‘Spring Fling’ lunch is coming up and the Theatre opportunities are numerous. We can choose to celebrate Probus month in March or April. We have decided to celebrate in April at the ‘Spring Fling’ lunch. Our Social Committee has many new ideas for fresh activities in the next year. Their committee has new members but is always ready to welcome more new members. I think they have a pretty good time at their meetings! We were reminded at our Management Meeting that we will have some vacancies next year. Judi Brouse and Linda Dix-Gibson are two that will be at the end of their terms in the fall. Judi writes our newsletter and Linda is our treasurer. They are both doing great jobs and we will miss them, but we don’t want to deprive other people of the chance to participate! Fall seems far away but time does seem to fly faster and faster. I am mentioning it now, so you can think about these opportunities. Please talk to Judi and Linda and learn more about their positions if you think you might be interested.
See you I hope at the meeting February 20.
Anne

Hiking HAPPY WANDERERS We hike throughout the year every Thursday morning (we snowshoe in the winter). Together with Central Probus we offer two levels of hiking: an easier pace with a shorter distance and a faster pace over a longer distance. January 25: Rainbow Ridge On Thursday, January 25, we had 17 Happy Wanderers out to hike the Rainbow Ridge trail led by naturalist, Bill Dickinson. Bill showed us how to identify numerous coniferous and deciduous trees using their needles or buds, respectively. He shared with us the history of the trails and properties we explored. Isn’t it wonderful to have a trail like this in town and people like Bill who share their expertise?!
February 1: Skating Party
18 skaters and 4 snowshoers gathered at the Ried's lakefront home to take advantage of rare perfect ice conditions on Lake Muskoka. Many shovelers arrived a half hour prior to the skating to clear the ice in many imaginative ways. After an hour and a half, the frosty-nosed gang went indoors for warm beverages, home baking and more camaraderie. No injuries of significance reported! The singer/songwriter who wrote and performs the music in the skating video (click picture) is Lily Frost. She is the daughter of Probus member Martha Davis.

February 8: Taboo
Twelve snowshoers met at Taboo on February 8 to hike the Big Pines trail. It was the perfect winter day....fresh sparkling snow in the sunshine and crisp air. Seven hikers continued on to complete the additional 2.2 km challenging loop of the Twin Ponds trail.
Limberlost Retreat
It was a great time again this year at Limberlost. 26 people made the trip and enjoyed lots of the laughter and friendships, as well as the food and snowshoeing.

Healthy Herbivores The first Healthy Herbivores luncheon of 2018, hosted by Gloria Rowe, was well attended by a rejuvenated group of folks interested in whole food, plant-based cooking. A variety of appetizers, including faux devilled eggs, got the lunch started. Then we moved on to delicious soup, salads, lasagne, curried lentils, and side vegetables. Desserts of chocolate pie and berry crumble topped up the meal. Needless to say, we were well fed! Great conversation and lots of laughs made for a very enjoyable break in the day.

THEATRE GROUP
Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and that your 2018 is off to a good start.
For those of you (42 PCML members and guests) who booked tickets for the Tartan Terrors performance at the Gravenhurst Opera House on January 24, you can pick up your tickets either at the PROBUS meeting on January 16, or, from me, at the theatre just before the show. Come to the theatre early and, for an additional charge, enjoy a Scotch nosing (tasting) to celebrate Robbie Burns Day!
Despite the cold and snow, there is still lots happening in Muskoka during the winter months, and we have two more performances on offer for all you theatre goers.
On Saturday, February 24, the Gravenhurst Opera House has a Toronto-based female musical group called Dirty Dishes. http://www.dirty-dishes.ca/music.htm This group has been described as a kick-in-the-pants, harmony-driven roots trio. Their show consists of delicious harmonies, washboard, fiddle, guitar and ukulele, sassy song writing and killer charm. A PROBUS group discount has been arranged for this performance.
"A fun, witty, delightful band...The Dirty Dishes will have you laughing one minute, dancing another, and having so much fun with you, you will want more!" -- Julia Phillips, Blue Skies Music Festival
Then, on Friday, March 2, a PROBUS group discount has been arranged for this performance only to watch this year’s Rotary musical, the Tony award winning, Cabaret, in Bracebridge, at the Rene M Caisse Theatre.
“ Wilkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome” to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd – and to leave their troubles outside. Set in 1931 as the Nazis begin their rise to power, will the decadent allure
of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times? Come see if life is a Cabaret, old chum.
You can sign up for either, or both, performances at the January 16 PROBUS meeting. As always, please respect the deadline dates, and remember that only your payment guarantees your ticket. Thanks.
