A Texas Ranger, an internandpolicedetectivesprovedthatinvestigators should “never saynever”whenitcomestosolvingcold cases. In 2008, Sgt. Matt Cawthon, the Unsolved CrimesInvestigation Team (UCIT)Ranger assigned to Company F,helpedclose theoldestunsolvedmurderinthehistoryofSanDi-ego,Calif.

On Dec. 28, 1971, GeraldJacksonwas stabbed todeath inhisapartmentinSanDiego.Thecrime remained unsolved for 37years,untilaninternworkingforthe San Diego Police Department was reviewing old case files in2007anddiscoveredthatalatentfingerprintwaspreservedonevi-denceinthecasefile.

Investigators submitted theprint to the Automated Finger-printIdentificationSystem,whichhelped identified the fingerprint

as belonging to GeraldMetcalf,now 62 and living in Chandler,Texas.

In 2008,Cawthon began as-sistingtheSanDiegoPoliceinthecaseandlocatedMetcalf.OnAu-gust27,CawthonandSanDiegoPoliceHomicideDetective JohnTeft interviewed thesuspectandobtainedfingerprintandDNAev-idence.Facedwithevidencelink-inghimtothehomicide,Metcalfconfessed but claimed self-de-fense,eventhoughthevictimhad

beenstabbedmorethan50times.CawthonarrestedMetcalfonOct.14,2008,andMetcalfiscurrentlyawaitingtrialinSanDiego.

“Cold case investigation, al-thoughnotnewtotheRangers,isoneofthemostimportantjobswedo.Itisachancetogivethevic-tims’ families some closure andcomfort,” saidCawthon. “And IlovedthelookonMetcalf’sfacewhenItoldhimwhyIwasthere.Itjustdoesn’tgetanybetterthanthat.”

Academy hosts class on spotting child abduction, abuseIdentifying a childwhomay

havebeenabductedorabusedcanbe difficult for law enforcementofficerswhodon’tknowwhattolookfor,soDPShostedthefirst-everclassthatwillteachofficershow to recognize these at-riskchildrenduringcontactswiththepublic, either in traffic stops orvisitstohomes.
