Personal Biography
Prof. Mahmoud EL-Meteini MD The President of Ain-Shams University
Prof. of HPB & Liver Transplantation Ain-Shams University, Cairo, Egypt
Prof. El-Meteini is currently chairing the HPB and liver transplant program in Faculty of Medicine, Ain-Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. He graduated from Ain-Shams University in 1985 where he completed his surgical residency program in 1990 after obtaining his MS degree in general surgery in 1989. Prof. El-Meteini received his training as a transplant fellow in the liver transplantation program in Cochin University hospital in Paris, France between 1990 and end of 1991 where he finished his MD thesis. In 1992, he spent one year as a senior surgical resident in the general surgery department in Saint-Louis University hospital in Paris, France. Upon his return to Ain-Shams University hopitals, in 1993, he was responsible for the initiation of HPB practice as a nucleus for a liver transplant program. Prof. El-Meteini obtained his MD degree by the end of 1993. In 1996, he received an advanced training program in HPB including living donor liver transplantation in Tokyo and Kyoto University hospitals in Japan. In 2001, he initiated and directed the first living liver transplant program, both in adults & pediatrics, in Wady El-Neel hospital in Cairo, Egypt. In 2008, he founded the Ain-Shams Center for Organ Transplant (ASCOT) in Ain-Shams University, which is leading the country in LDLT. Over a decade, he has been working hard at all levels, with his colleagues, for the legislation of an “Organ Transplant Law” regulating the practice in Egypt. He was a permanent member in the committee for drafting the law and its executive regulations till its approving by the Egyptian parliament in March 2010.
Prof. El-Meteini has published in peer reviewed journals and has chaired and presented in many national, regional and international meetings. He is a member in numerous national and international professional organizations and a founder member and current secretary general of the Pan-Arab Liver Transplant Society (PALTS). He is currently a member of the “Supreme Committee for Organ Transplant” and chairing the “Ethical Committee” within the Supreme committee.
Prof. El-Meteini’s leadership and administrative philosophy pivots on team-building and individual empowerment with attention to multi-disciplinary, multi-organizational and at times multi-governmental approach to accomplishments and achievements at faculty, hospitals and community level. All while keeping in mind the dynamic nature of such processes and the need for on-going development, and with a focus on system approach to problem solving and program building.
