Now in its fifth edition, the Project Management
Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a collection of
processes and knowledge areas accepted as best practice
for the project management profession. As an internation-
ally recognised standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2008 and IEEE
1490-2011) it provides the fundamentals of project manage-
ment, irrespective of the type of project be it construction,
software, engineering, automotive, etc.
PMBOK recognises 5 basic process groups and 10 knowl-
edge areas typical of almost all projects. The basic concepts
are applicable to projects, programmes and operations. The
five basic process groups are:
1. Initiating
2. Planning
3. Executing
4. Monitoring and Controlling
5. Closing
Processes overlap and interact throughout a project or
phase. Processes are described in terms of:
• Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.)
• Tools and Techniques (mechanisms applied to inputs)
• Outputs (documents, products, etc.)
The ten knowledge areas are:
• Project Integration Management
• Project Scope Management
• Project Time Management
• Project Cost Management
• Project Quality Management
• Project Human Resource Management
• Project Communications Management
• Project Risk Management
• Project Procurement Management
• Project Stakeholder Management (added in the 5th
edition)
Each knowledge area contains some or all of the project
management processes. For example, Project Procurement
Management includes:
• Plan Procurements
• Conduct Procurements
• Administer Procurements
• Close Procurements
Much of PMBOK is unique to project management, for exam-
ple, critical path and work breakdown structure (WBS). Some
areas overlap with other management disciplines including
planning, organising, staffing, executing and controlling the
operations of an organisation. Financial forecasting, organi-
sational behaviour and planning techniques are also similar.
The Project Management Institute has created a suite of ac-
crediations, but by far the two most popular are:
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) - A
project manager with this certification has demonstrated a
common base of knowledge and terms in the field of project
management. It requires a secondary degree (high school
diploma or global equivalent) and either 1500 hours of work
on a project team or 23 contact hours of formal education in
project management.
Project Management Professional (PMP) - A project man-
ager with this certification has met specific education and
experience requirements, has agreed to adhere to a code
of professional conduct and has passed an examination
designed to objectively assess and measure project manage-
ment knowledge. In addition, a PMP must satisfy continuing
certification requirements or lose the certification.

Who should attend PMI® training?
Making projects workPMI global standards provide guidelines, rules and char-
acteristics for project, program and portfolio manage-
ment. These standards are widely accepted and, when
consistently applied, they help you, your global peers
and your organisation achieve professional excellence.
The PMBOK guide identifies a subset of ten knowledge
areas that the project management body of knowledge
generally recognised as a good practice.
In PMBOK, the term ‘generally recognised’ means the
knowledge and practices described are applicable to
most projects most of the time and there is a consensus
about their value and usefulness.
The term ‘good practice’ means there is a general agree-
ment that the application of the knowledge, skills, tools,
and techniques can enhance the chance of success over
many projects.
Anybody can apply for a Project
Management Institute certification
that matches their qualification and
experience; no certification serves as
a prerequisite for another. There is no
need to be a PMI member but there
are member discounts on application
and credential maintenance costs. But
which certification should you target?
The Certified Associate in Project Man-
agement (CAPM) is designed for less
experienced project practitioners look-
ing to demonstrate their commitment
to project management, improve their
ability to manage larger projects and
earn additional responsibility. CAPM
demonstrates your understanding of
the fundamental knowledge, terminol-
ogy and processes of effective project
management. The audience for the
PMI CAPM course may include:
• Project Team Members
• Managers
• Project Leaders
• Senior Management
• New Project Managers
The Project Management Professional
(PMP) credential is one of the most
important industry-recognised certifi-
cation for project managers. Globally
recognised and demanded, the PMP
demonstrates that the holder has the
experience, education and compe-
tency to lead and direct projects. The
audience for the PMI PMP course may
include:
• Project Managers
• Project Leaders
• Project Directors
• Senior Project Officers
• Program Coordinator/Managers
• Development Managers
• Planning Managers
• Professional Consultants

TACT is Syzygal’s pro-prietary methodology for developing courses and courseware
As part of doctoral research,
Syzygal have developed a unique
approach to developing and
designing professional education
courses and courseware. Rather
than utilising tired and over-used
methods such as working straight
from a syllabus, Syzygal decided to
research the key elements of effec-
tive learning. What we found was
that although dynamic and flexible
delivery methods were essential to
the overall experience for students,
it was the approach to content
formulation and positioning that
was critical to maximising learning
up-take and knowledge retention.
The THEORY of a subject is obvi-
ously critical to success, but ensur-
ing it is positioned in contextual
alignment is the pay-off. We then
ensure students ABSORB the the-
ory by placing them in real-world
scenarios and role-plays, ensuring
the theory connects to practical
application. To support this we
CONSOLIDATE the learning by us-
ing innovative games and exercises
to further develop understanding
and retention. Finally we ensure
TESTING takes place throughout
training events which prepares
the student to take their formal
certification.
