The Foundation in Arts is an exclusive pre-university programme at Sunway University College. It is an idealprogramme to prepare post-secondary school students to go directly into Sunways own undergraduate
programmes which are validated by Lancaster University, UK.
This oundation programme emphasises the development o well-rounded students in both numerical and
communication skills through structured subjects in Mathematics and English throughout every semester.

National Institute or Youth Development ResearchThe National Institute or Youth Development Research was set up by the Minister o Youth and Sports to provide proessional
advice on youth issues. Dr Teoh Hsien-Jin, Ms Woo Pei Jun and Ms Cheong Sau Kuan have been involved in the development
o research projects on youth which has contributed towards policy or Youth Development in Malaysia. Current projects
include projects that involve youth mental health, liestyle and attitudes. The collaboration with many government think-tanks
and ministries has made development o the projects possible.
Parenting at Work, Ministry o Women, Family & Community DevelopmentThe Ministry o Women, Family & Community Development has recently launched the Parenting at Work programme aiming
to assist working parents with skills to manage a healthy liestyle at work and at home. Ms Woo Pei Jun played an active role
in the development o the training modules and together with her colleagues, Ms Cheong Sau Kuan and Ms Elaine Yong,
assisted in running some o these training programmes or ministry sta and the participant activity modules.
Nutrition Society o Malaysia/Malaysian Paediatric Association The society has been set-up to promote healthy living and nutrition amongst young children. The sta regularly assist
programmes through public talks on children mental health, eating habits and positive parenting.
Emmanuel Care CentreThe Emmanuel Care Centre was set up to assist children with learning and developmental disabilities. Ms Woo Pei Jun has
assisted with services in the centre through providing expert advice in diagnosis and rehabilitation or children. Some o our
students have also had their internship placement at the centre.
National Autism Society o MalaysiaThe National Autism Society o Malaysia is concerned with the services that are being provided or autistic children.
These services include assessments and diagnosis, training in sel-care skills, motor skills, speech and early intellectual development.
Ms Woo Pei Jun assists in the society through her involvement as a consultant to the National Advisory Council.
Contributing to Society
At Sunway University College, sta and students are encouraged to get involved in a variety o
community projects.
They do this either via providing community inormation, research or through skills training

Amway One-By-One Campaign or ChildrenThe Amway One-By-One Campaign or children was set up in Malaysia to promote positive mental health amongst Malaysian
Children. The campaign includes parenting workshops, social skills training or children, parent-child interaction camps, and a
series o mental health education articles in the English, Malay and Chinese newspapers. The sta and students o the Department
o Psychology have been regularly involved in running this programme, with the support o Amway Malaysia.
IT Shared ServicesDr. Priyadarshini Srinivasan and Dr. Lin Mei-Hua conducted a survey to analyse the reasons or eective perormance among
employees, especially in terms o increasing motivation and lowering the turnover intentions. The survey was carried out with
a sample o 60 employees on various organisational concepts and employees reaction and well being. Concepts which aect
turnover intentions, work motivation and job satisaction were identied and a detailed report was prepared and presented
to the Director o the organisation.
Wellness ProjectDr. Lin Mei-Hua, Dr. Priyadarshini Srinivasan and Ms Cheong Sau Kuan are involved in a wellness intervention programme
or employees o a hospitality organisation. The client is concerned by the high medical claims and increased level o job
turnover among their employees, thereore, as consultants, Dr. Lin, Dr. Priya and Ms Cheong conducted a careul, thorough
observation o the work setting and conducted ocus groups. To ollow is a survey to be administered to all employees.
Based on the survey results a suitable intervention programme will be recommended.
Diversity Awareness ProgrammeDr. Priyadarshini Srinivasan and Dr. Alia Azalea are in the process o conducting a Diversity Awareness Programme or a
major pharmaceutical organisation. An assessment and training will be conducted to address the issue o stereotyping and
unconscious biasness among the employees o the organization. Such programme will help the organization to understand
the possible process o their hiring decisions.

UCS 1000 STUDY SKILLSThe objective o this subject is to prepare students to
be more organised and sel-reliant in their learning
by developing a set o speciic skills necessary

through collaborative learning (or learning through the

UCS 1003 ENGLISH FOR PSYCHOLOGY
An important aspect o advancing proessional
education in the eld o psychology is to be able to keep
up-to-date with scientic publications. Many o these
publications are in English. Hence, a strong oundation in
English is necessary. This subject ocuses on ew aspects
in the learning o English or psychological studies. It
helps students to improve their reading strategies or
processing academic texts. It also develops the ollowing

PSY 1014 INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY This introductory subject covers methods, data, and
theoretical interpretations in areas o learning, sensory
psychology, and psycho-physiology. Developmental,
social, personality and abnormal psychology are also
included.
PSY 1024 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Social Psychology looks at how individuals are aected
by their social environment. Topics include attitude,
conormity, riendship ormation and group dynamics.
Tutorials include projects that require students to
research social situations in greater depth.
PSY 1034 DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
This subject examines the dierent stages that humans
go through in their development process. It also explores
how some o these processes change during ones lie
span. This unit examines aspects o human development
such as memory, attention, intelligence, speech and
language, social and moral values, and motor abilities. In
addition to lectures, there are tutorials and small projects
that require students to pay attention to various aspects
o human development.
PSY 1044 ORGANISATIONAL PSYCHOLOGYTopics include recruiting, selecting, appraising and training
employees, motivation o work, work perormance and
its measurements, job satisaction, occupational stress,
leadership and group communication. It also includes a
section on Occupational Health and Saety that considers
the rights o employees, saety and health programmes,
eective communication and sexual harassment.
PSY 1054 MOTIVATION AND EMOTION
What keeps people motivated? This subject examines the
various theories o motivation. The perspectives taken
include: need theory, instrumentality theory, comparisontheory, goal setting theory and reinorcement theory.
In addition, the subject examines how emotions are
ormed and what aects them. In this context, the role
o emotions in bringing about mental health disorders is
similarly examined.
STA 1014 INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS
This subject examines the nature o statistical data,
ordering and manipulation o data, measures o central
tendency and dispersion, and elementary probability.
Concepts o statistical inerence, estimation and
hypothesis testing are explored as well. Special topics
include means, requency tables, standard deviations, t-
tests, correlation, analysis o variance and non-parametric
methods.
RSM 1014 RESEARCH METHODS The prerequisite to developing a thesis or students
involves a thorough understanding o how experiments
are developed. With this in mind, students are required
to understand the construction o surveys and survey
methodology, single case-study designs, matched
subject designs and repeated measure designs. In
addition, an understanding o the kinds o analysis
employed in each experimental design is explored. This
unit instructs students on how to write research reports
in a systematic and standardised manner.
PSY 1063 PET BEHAVIOURAL STUDIES
Almost all theories o psychology originated with
observations and studies o the animal world. The aim
o this module is to introduce the student to the world
o domesticated pets. During the course, the student will
be exposed to a wide variety o topics on animals that
are aimed at improving their sensitivity and awareness
to the animal world. Through this course, they gain a
healthy respect or these animals that also have eelings.
The course covers a variety o topics, ranging rom
perception and cognition, health, abnormal behaviours,
animal assisted therapy and education, to human-animal
relationships.
PSY 1073 COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH
All proessional psychologists will eventually contribute in
some way towards educating the community on a wide
range o mental health issues. This module introduces
the student to a wide variety o general mental health
issues. Many o the applications o these concepts are
to concern amily and working environment that the
student may encounter in the uture. Through a mixture
o theoretical principles and public health inormation,
this module intends to equip the student with a variety
o positive mental health skills which they can eventually
impart to the general audience.

PSY 2014 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEARNING AND
EDUCATION
This subject introduces the theoretical basis o learning to
students. It begins with the study o Classical Behaviourist
Theory and moves towards Operant Conditioning. In the
context o the environment, the Social Learning Theory
is introduced and ollowed by more recent models
o learning such as the Inormation Processing Modeland the Cognitive Learning Theory. This course will also
examine methods o curriculum design, motivating
students, controlling class behaviour and maintaining
students attention.
PSY 2024 PERSONALITY PSYCHOLOGY
This subject concerns the study o personality. It
examines each o the major theories o personality. In
addition, it looks at the actors that aect personality
development. There is also emphasis on measurements
and practical applications o personality to medical and
industrial settings.
PSY 2034 THEORIES OF COUNSELLING
An overview o the various theories o counselling
is provided in this subject. Theories covered include:
Cognitive Theories, Behavioural Theories, Rational
Emotive Therapy, Psychoanalysis, Family Therapy
(Systems Theory), Client-Centred Therapy, Gestalt
Therapy and Group Therapy.
PSY 2044 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY
This subject studies the orms o abnormal behaviour,
aetiology, development, interpretation and nal
maniestation. It is research-based and provides studentswith an understanding o the current approaches to
treatment. Topics covered include personality disorders,
schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and mood disorder
based on the DSM-IV. This unit also examines the
importance o proessional issues such as ethics and
malpractice. The unit is essential or those intending to
pursue Clinical Psychology at the graduate level.
PSY 2054 APPLIED DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
This is a nal year subject which introduces students to a
range o applied issues in developmental psychology. It
examines children in dierent settings (amily, school, peergroup and hospital) and discusses important inuences
on childrens lives (the media, law, health and drugs).
In addition, it examines the plight and predicament
o the elderly when their physical and mental abilities
begin to deteriorate. The prescribed readings, lectures
and practical work cover applied aspects o normal and
typical development rom birth to old age.
PSY 2064 BRAIN AND BEHAVIOUR
This subject ocuses on the eects that biological and
chemical processes have on behaviour. The topics
covered include brain damage, sensory deprivation,
psychopharmacology, attention decit, visual system,
memory, sleep, hormones and sex, and substance abuse.
It also examines the chemical processes associated with
motivation.
PSY 2074 PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING
The purpose o this subject is to introduce students
to psychological tests that are commonly used in
applied settings: IQ tests, Adaptive tests, Language
tests, Mathematics tests, Personality tests, tests o
Aect and tests o Behaviour. It is also the intention o
this unit to make sure that students clearly understand
the meaning o concepts such as percentiles, standard
deviations, means and clinical cut-o scores. Tutorials
and practical work are designed to provide studentswith basic skills in interviewing, testing, systematic
observation and report writing.
PSY 2084 COGNITION AND PERCEPTION
This subject is an introduction to Cognitive Psychology
and Sensory Perception. Cognitive Psychology concerns
how humans acquire, process and represent inormation.
Lectures on cognition ocus on theories, concepts, and
empirical ndings related to topics such as language
and reading; contemporary models o memory; thinking
and reasoning; and decision making. It also examines
the structure and unctions o the sensory systems such
as vision, hearing and touch. The perception lectures
address how sensory abilities are measured and their
limitations. Attention is also paid to the use o measures
o sensory capacity in understanding more complex
problems such as reading disabilities.
PSY 2094 CROSS-CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY
Understanding how local culture interacts with and
subsequently aects human behaviour is crucial when
trying to solve behavioural and emotional problems. This
course examines the way cultures dier, and how humans
perceive, think, eel, strive and relate to others. During
the lectures, the social and inter-personal interactions,industrial practices and values between Malaysian and
other cultures are examined through project work,
research and lectures.

PSY 3013 ADVANCED TOPICS IN PSYCHOLOGY
This consists o a series o lectures on a wide range o
topics that are typical to the eld o psychology. These
lectures examine the psychologists perspectives on the
ollowing areas: aviation, divorce, health, and ethics.
PSY 3024 BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION
Many things within the environment shape a childsbehaviour. I behaviours are not brought under control,
the result is Oppositional Deant Disorder. This lecture
series looks at the role that Operant Conditioning and
Social Learning plays in shaping a childs behaviour. It
then ocuses on how behavioural techniques may be
used to control the childs behaviour. These procedures
include play, praise, rewards, ignoring, time out and
logical consequences. In addition, it also looks at
techniques that are used to shape the behaviour o an
autistic child. The emphasis here is on techniques o
Applied Behaviour Analysis.
PSY 3034 LEARNING DISABILITIES
Many things can result in a child having difculties in
assimilating and learning new inormation. This unit
introduces the student to some o the most common
causes o learning disabilities. Amongst the topics
covered are visual-perceptual problems, attention
decits and mental retardation.
PSY 3043 HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY
This subject examines the philosophical and historical
development o knowledge within psychology and
how these critical issues impact on the current belies
concerning the objective nature o psychology as a
discipline, together with its limitations. It also compares
and contrasts the development o Western-based
and Eastern-based knowledge, and their relevance ormodern psychology. Topics will include philosophy o
the mind, metaphysics and philosophy o science as
they relate to the development o the various paradigms
within psychology and across both Eastern and Western
perspectives.
PRJ 3026 RESEARCH PROJECT
All students enrolled in this subject will be required to
undertake a small-scale research project that involves
designing a study, writing an introduction, data
collection and analysis, discussion and compilation o a
reerence list. The standards to which this report is writtenshould abide with that o the American Psychological
Association.
INT 3026 INTERNSHIP
Students are required to carry out a period o supervised
practical work that applies the skills learnt throughout
the psychology course. Practical may involve clinical,
community, child or human resource work.
