President's Message
Many thanks to Steven Donahue who has volunteered to take over the helm of the Herding Committee. Since this committee has been lacking a chairman for sometime now, it is a relief that w e now have some leadership. Thank you, Steven!
We are pleased to announce that the 2009 AKC/ EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP will be held December 12 and 13, 2009, at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. Once again, we have been invited to host an AKC MEET THE BREEDS booth. This event attracts many people anxious to learn about different breeds. Since much of our club focus is on public education, it is a perfect time to help the general public learn about Pulis.
If you have any interest in helping with this event, please contact Nancy Donahue at [email protected]. I am certain she will be delighted to hear from you.
Please be sure to check elsewhere in this issue of PN for all the details connected with our National Specialty to be held in October, 2009. It is NEVER to late to make plans!!!
Have a safe and wonderful summer!
Carolyn Nusbickel

Caution, One and All!
Approximately two months ago, I was given a reprimand by the AKC for having an illegal collar on a trial site. I was ignorant of the rule, made no pretense of hiding the collar, but no one advised me that such a collar could get me into Big Trouble. Unfortunately, someone wrote on a scrap of paper that I had such a collar, and because it was in writing the Trial Committee had no choice but to act upon the complaint. Long story short, I was suspended from the remaining two days of the trial , fined $100.00 and published in The Gazette.
This was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life, and I urge you all to know the rules, advise anyone you see who might (unknowingly) be in violation to be aware that they had better be carefu l, and to ask directly the person published what occurred, rather than to gossip or to speculate. Be aware trial committees have no alternative but to act upon written complaints
I hope you will find this information of help and that none of you experience the humiliation through which I went.
Sincerely, Melinda Peters

BARNEY

Last week, Barney received a "G MAIL," from the Greatest Shepherd the world has ever known. It said " I need a well-trained herding Puli to take charge in the big pasture! Please be aware, by some greater power, the hand of Puli Club Artist Diane Fields was guided to create a lasting memorial to Barney by choosing his picture for her drawing on the cover of your 2009 Membership Directory.

Kiro achieved the points necessary for his VP-X in 2005 . Since he 's retired, we are updating his VP points to span his entire competitive years. He now spends his time patrolling the house and managing the younger Pulik. Kiro turned 15 years old last month. He sti ll thinks that he 's alpha. Jim and I have had so many fun times with Kiro whi le acquiring this variety of titles. He was and still is always ready to go (although now he walks instead of runs).
He is a very amazing Puli and we owe a big thanks to Barbara Stelz for letting him join our lives.

Bowmaker V Pipacs UD, HSAs, NA, AXJ Pipacs completed her VPA requirements in style, during October of 2008. After three years of painstaking work, many setbacks and occasionally, incremental progress, she completed her Utility Dog title with Q's in Utility A class on three consecutive days! It was her biggest accomplishment so far. Further progress in agility remains as her toughest obstacle (pun intended), but we' ll keep working on that, too. Her handler would miss the exercise ifwe had to give that up. Wondering how she can make the next level, but we ' ll give it our best. She' s very proud of herself when she performs and succeeds, and she ' s not done yet.
Thanks to everyone involved in providing us this challenge, and this recognition, as a Versatile Puli Advanced!

We been working on agility for quite some time and are entered in our first AKC agility trial in June (2009), are preparing for his CDX, are taking herding lessons, and are working on freestyle moves so we can compete in WCFO competitions . Kerge's training has been totally positive, he is a "poster child" for Clicker Training -- which I highly recommend for all Pulis. He loves to train!

We were delighted and surprised to receive this recognition, but THANK YOU!
More intense training has led to our being a bit more speedy in the ring, but still I wish my mom wouldn't get in my way to slow us down, or take her eye off me so that I go off course.
We remain addicted to agility and so long as it remains fun we shall continue!

MACH2 Bowmaker Szereto Kutya, CD,RN,NF 325 Points
Scootie has had a very busy year becoming the first Puli ever to attain a MACH2 combining that with another trip to the AKC Agility Nationals where he finished in the top third of the 16" class composed of Border Collies and Shelties.
Scootie has a terrific work eth ic and a marvelous sense of fun which keeps me on my toes whenever we're in the ring together. Even after all these years competing, Scootie can still make a split second decision to fly to the other side of the ring or run around the last jump.
He keeps me humble and I give him all the cookies he could ever want. Definitely a winning combination!'

2008 was a good year fo r Rombi and we are proud to be on the Puli Club of America's Top Ten List for 2008. This is Rombi's sixth time on the Top Ten list and his fifth consecutive year. He attended the December AKC Agility In vitational in Long Beach for the third consecutive year. He was the High Scoring Puli at the 2008 AKC Agility Invitational and received a very nice medallion.
Rombi a lso competes in USDAA agility. During 2008 in USDAA agility, Rombi completed his Master Agility Dog (MA D) title - the first Puli ever to complete this tit le. Every time we go to a trial we both have fun whether we Q or NQ. We have made great friends all over the Mid-Atlantic and Oliver has been a great ambassador for the breed, drawing much interest from both exhibitors and judges as being clipped he does not have cords !
He is reliable, constantly picking up double Q's. In 2009 we have been working on increasing our speed through the weave poles and between jumps. He has just won his first 1st place in Excellent B !
That elusive MACH may now be in sight and we hope to achieve this in 2009 as long as I can convince him that he has to put at least his toe nail in the ye llow contact zones on obstacles ..... however Oliver thinks it is more fun to jump over them instead!

We are very honored to be in the Top IO Agility Pulik for 2008. We work (and play) very hard on our agility ....... it is our passion!
We are proud that AKC had us listed as the # I Agility Puli for the calendar year of 2008 with 550 points and 6 double Qs for a total of 610 points. We were also thrilled to be invited to the AKC Invitational last December and had a good first experience there. We are hoping to go again this year and would love to make it to the final s.
We have improved a lot this past year but have a lot of room for more improvement. Buvi is quite fast and often with speed comes inconsistency .. .. .... we strive for more consistency. To date, we have 15 double Qs and 1,289 points; we are hoping to get our MACH before the end of the year. Tippy Sheppard

MACH Prydain Young Wizard CD RN OF 170 Points
I am so proud that Harry and I qualified for the top ten this year. The highlight of2008 was earning our MACH in December. While the journey was fun , it was for us also quite long. It is nice to have the title to validate our efforts.
Harry continues to entertain me, and our relationship deepens each year. He has taught me so much about myself, and Pulik, and agility, and I will forever be grateful. While not trialing in agility, Harry loves running through the almond orchards that surround our home. Even better than that is when he finds a mud puddle to cool off in.

"Kai" began her agility show career in Spring 2008, quickly making her way thru her AKC Preferred titles before moving on to her Performance titles. I' ve been absolutely beaming since I found out she made the Top IO agility list, alongside such impressive honorees - our agility idols. "Kai" is a perfectionist, to her. .. " running clean" is having fun. Almost as much fun as a ll the ' puppy crack ' (aka li ver treats) that she gets as her payout.
"Kai" and I thank all of the wonderful people in the Dallas area with whom we
train and show; they have provided us with great instruction and friendship. "Kai"
asked that I thank Inna Fertl (her co-owner, one of her breeders, and my mom) for
letting her ("Kai") pick me, to be her partner in life. "Kai" has been working hard
during 2009 to continue to make the Piroska kennel proud. ~ Dagmar Fertl

To be in the top ten is truly an honor and amazement. Just to be in the game is a reward in itself. Miss Peepers is so much fun , she makes these grunting sounds while she is running, I call her my "pig" girl. She is very unforgi ving with late commands. You didn't say anything so I will go do a few thing on my own. Doesn't help with getting those Q's. So much fun to run if you are not serious.

Squashie became my diva Puli , I'm not quite sure how that happened. She is more forgiving of my bad handling and a joy to run, when she is on her game and I am too she's awesome. She is quite vocal with her wants, which is "throw the ball" now. She is also food motivated and only works for the good stuff.

Each year I calculate the Fastest Agility Runs by a Puli from information that I get from the AKC. The Top Ten Fastest Agility Runs of each year are also posted on the Puli Club of America Website www.puliclub.org.
Jumpers with Weaves (JWW) classes are made up of jumps (single bar and spread), tunnels (open and collapsed) and weave poles. The Yards per Second requirement for JWW runs is much higher than the Standard agility classes since there are no contact obstacles in the course. I calculated Yards per Second by dividing the number of yards in the course by the dog's time.
This year the Top Ten Fastest JWW list was swept by Martha C Sheppard and her incredible Puli, Shaghaven Buvosh CDX RE MX MXJ NF, in fact this team had the top 18 fastest runs in 2008!

Standard Agility classes are comprised of the same selection of obstacles as in JWW, with the addition of three contact obstacles (Teeter-totter, elevated Dog Walk, A-Frame), plus a table . The dog must touch the 'contact' zone (last few feet of each 'contact obstacle' and the first few feet on the Dog Walk). Missing the 'contact' zone results in a nonqualifying score, at all levels of agility. The table is also a required obstacle, where the dog must sit or down for 5 seconds. The judge calculates the Standard Course Time based on the course length and required YPS then adds 5 seconds for the time that is spent on the Table. I calculated Yards per Second by dividing the number of yards in the course by the dog's time less the 5 seconds for the table.

From Ruth Boatright - PCA Historian
This article is taken from "THE PULi", Editor, Dr. Sandor Palfalvy, M.D. and Published by Dr. and Mrs. Fred Thardy,
I SI year, I SI issue, November 1965.
PULY - PULi "Precious Animal" "Precious Value"
Did you ever think about the meaning of the word: Puli? When you saw it in print, heard, read or pronounced it, did you wonder if it has any special meaning, or you simply used it as the name of a certain breed of dog? Did you know that it contains a lot offeeling, sentiment and appreciation? Yes, it does.
The word Puli has a very interesting history. It had been created by not one person , but a whole nation, the Hungarians, who at that time were called "szabir," and were a part of the sumer people along with other tribes, such as the Huns, Dacians, A vars, and Chuz.
They valued this animal highly, loved him, appreciated his work and thought of him as their very own, regarded him as a useful member of society. All this is condensed in the word: Puli.
I think it worthwhile to analyze this word and take it under the dissecting knife of linguistics and see its evolution, its meaning and to follow how did it develop?
The word: "ASAL Y" means: cattle, worth, livestock, value, asset in old szamer-szumir (summer) according to linguistics and this is the base word of Puli. At that time livestock meant wealth. Even under the first Hungarian King, St. Stephen (1001 -38) young bullock (ox) was the standard of value.
"The word ABAL Y has a variation: APAL Y. Since the labialis and semilabialis consonants: b, p, v, m, f may change in the development of a word with the hard and soft sounds without change in the meaning, the most easily exchanged consonants are the "p" and "b" in the vocabulary deve lopment of any language." (Quotation)
You are probably wondering about these two words: ABAL Y - APAL Y; these certainly sound a little strange to the ears. But we should keep in mind that in the course of7-8000 years, language goes through great changes. There are lots of words used in present-day Hungarian which originated from this base word, but are not easily recognizable because of their phonetic change. Reading scripts originating only a few hundred years ago the change of times is apparent.
There are few present-day variations of ABAL Y-AP ALY, originating from these two words according to linguistics; today' s "goboly" (fatted ox) and "bivaly" (buffalo) are similar in meaning and form. The old word GU meaning neck is included in the modern GUga, Gga, GEge words (Guga, giga=animal neck, Gege=throat) . The composition of the two words Gu-Baly gives us the modern word Goboly meaning yoke-draught cattle. BU=meaning dark or black in the old language, and in today' s Hungarian bubanat (sadness) and busulas (melancholy) are certainly not gay or happy feelings. The long-ago used word BU-BAL Y (black cattle) is obviously the equivalent of SIBAL Y (water buffalo) in modern Hungarian. Also from these two words had developed the word V AJ (butter) meaning the rich part of milk. There are family names (surnames) taking their origin from this base word: BAY, VAY and FAY. These surnames refer to the family's financial standing too, besides being family names. Bojtar (shepherd boy), Puli and Pulya (child) can be traced back clearly to these two words.
All this research has been done by scientists recognized all over the world. We can hardly accuse them with national prejudice since the English, German and French scientists greatly outnumber the Hungarians in this field. It has been generally acknowledged as fact that the Hungarian language takes its origin from the Szamers - Szumir (sumer) since their words, suffixes,
Puli News - June 2009, Page 24
inflection, conjugation and structure of grammar show such similarities which are not found in any other language.
There is another variation of ABAL Y - AP ALY and that is APUL Y (A PUL Y - The PUL Y) meaning: valuable, precious, dear to someone' s heart. According to the laws of etymology the words: Puli and pulya (child) take their origin from this word.
"The first vowel at the beginning of these words can be completely omitted during the word's development, or separated from it, can play the part of an article." (Quotation)
This is what happened to the word APUL Y when it became Puly and Pulya (child). It is not nonsense but can be proved by the laws of etymology.
I am sure it is surprising to state that in the old language, the pride and joy of the family, the child, and an animal take their name from the same word, and are called practically the same but it is a fact. Both were valuable, dear to the heart and treasured.
To understand this clearly I have to say a few words about the Hungarian people, about their way of life and to explain how is it possible to have the word Puli and the word child so similar in the vocabulary. Our ancestors lived in kinship systems at that time; all property was owned jointly; each member of the family took equal part in chores to multiply their wealth under the head of the family's leadership. They were self-dependent; each member of the family doing necessary jobs. In kinship systems where livestock meant wealth, children were considered equally valuable; grown to manhood they meant working hands helping to increase the family's property and respect. Even today we hear from Hungarian parents: "My children are my wealth." It was the same way thousands of years ago.
And how did the Puli fit into society living in kinship systems? How did he share in the common work? By guarding and herding the all-important livestock, he played an important part indeed. In this capacity he freed three or four men making it possible for them to work on some more complicated job; thus becoming a very useful member of society, just like the child. "A good Puli is worth more than three shepherd boys," has been said many times and it still holds true to this day.
The Puli was owned by the whole family, the work he did was for the common good; that is why he is spoken of as a member of the family among shepherds. It explains the similarity between the word Puli and pulya (child) meaning valuable and esteemed.
Our ancestors did not use the Latin alphabet in their written language, but used the so-called "runic" writing which was burned into pottery and carved into wood and stone.
Among hundreds of other words left to us in runic writing can be found the words ABAL Y and APUL Y. These were found by archeologists in the ancient territory where the Sumer-Hungarians were living in the cities UrKald, Szerir, Madzar (Magyar), Szurozs, Perin, Kelermes, Ogyeg. This territory was named by the Greek historian, Herodotos : HIPPOTOXOT AJ (phonetically) country of the people where men shot with arrows from horse back.
The symbols shown at the beginning of the article meaning Puli have been found by archeologists excavating anc ient graves in the Baknan-Csegem and Csigirin valleys. There is no doubt that this word Puly is the old fonn of the today Puli word because on the findings this word appears with another word which is the old name of the sheep used long ago and above these two words , there is no other word.
These findings are so exciting and have such documental value, I will devote a separate article to their detailed discussion at a later date.
I have no infom1ation as to when the letter "Y" has been transformed into "I" at the end of the word: Puli. Presumably it had been pronounced " I". Fay is a good example to demonstrate this, because it originates from the same base

word and is pronounced Fai not Faj . Later the spelling followed the pronunciation changing y to i. I personally have an irresistible feeling about this i-business, that the change has been brought about not only by grammar or phonetic rule, but by sentimental factors as well.
It is generally known that changing the end ofa noun to I we express love and closeness. This is how Katalin will become Kati, Anta l=Anti , Marton=Marci etc. I could go on and on, but it is easy to see that the I at the end means: love, being on friendly terms, familiarity.
Knowing the mind of Hungarian people I think this is how the "i" got to the end of the word Puly.
The shepherd was all by himself with the Puli and the flock for long periods of time: the Puli was his only companion and help: no wonder he grew fond of him . "I used to talk to my Puli who understands every single word" - sa id to me several times (Maerton Kovacs, eighty years old shepherd's from Zsaka (Bihar county).

Puli means "precious animal" (valuable animal)
in the language of Hungarian ancestors as long as 7-8000 years ago, and the same and its meaning is unchanged to this day.
We can be proud of our Puli and his name; there is not another species in the world which was immortalized in such a beautiful word expressed by the human love and appreciation.
The name of the Puli means even more that this analysis for the scientific world and for you also. The foregoing analysis is just the first step enroute to the "treasure house" given to the world of the Puli . Therefore, if you are interested in these things, I will continue this study and step by step you will arrive to the goal and you will have a knowledge which all Puli owners have to get because after knowing this, I can certainly tell that above your present love, you will feel your Puli nearer to you.

Breeder Information listings are accepted by Puli Club of America members in good standing. Breeders listed here will also be listed on PCA 's web s ite at www.Puliclub.org/pcabreeders.htm. If your kennel has a web site, \.ve can provide a link. Just send a note to the Web Page committee at [email protected].
Zeal to produce champions or perpetuare a bloodline must never compromise a breeder's sensitivity to the quality of life rhat every Puli bred will experience. Breeders must consider the welft,re of the Puli above personal gain or profit. Breeders have the responsibility to insure the welfare of aJJ puppies they produce and remain responsible/or those Pulik throughout their entire lifetime. Should the s ituation arise. breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.
This wording has been added to insure that breeder 's own the ultimate responsibility for the dogs they produce throughout their lifetime. The Puli Club of America Rescue Trost is not responsible for p lacing dogs bred by knoun people in the breed, and the Board felt that clear lines need to be es1ablished to advise everyone of their responsibility in 1he future. Should Rescue be advised of a Puli in need of re-homing their firs t obligation is 10 try to determine who 1he breeder is, and then comact that person in order that 1hey can make the necessary arrangements fo r their dog.
