If you close your eyes and think about breast cancer, what comes to mind? Probably words like mammogram, medicine, heredity, chemotherapy, self-breast exam and radiation, among others. You probably wouldn’t think about the word “prevention”, and yet, that’s the most important one.

Make friends with your scale and control your weight, especially if you’re going through menopause.
Take care of yourself by eating a healthy diet. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your diet. Limit alcohol, saturated and trans fats.
Work out. Half hour work-outs every day will give you lots of energy and will help you maintain a healthy weight.
Don’t forget regular check-ups with your physician. Remember, your health is your most important asset. You can fight breast cancer. The battle begins today.

To prevent breast cancer, it’s im-portant for us, as women, to think about everything from risk factors to detection methods to lifestyle.
We know that the prognosis is better when breast cancer is detected early; however, many women don’t get the necessary tests done in time. To prevent or diagnose breast cancer in time, you must make the commitment to do breast self-exams and to get a mammogram when your doctor recommends it. Even if you have no symptoms, a mammogram will show abnormalities that might other-wise go undetected.

Nowadays there is a contro-versy: The U.S. Preventive Service Task Force recom-mends mammograms for women over the age of 50. On the other hand, The American Cancer Society recommends mammo-grams begin at 40 and that decision must be made on a case-by-case basis. I also agree that every case is different. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of a mammogram in your specific case and make desicions according to the advice you get.
At what age should you get your first mammogram?

Raising bilingual and bicultural children
Presented by BabyCenter® en Español
Raising bilingual children isn’t easy. Around the world, people migrate in search of a better life and better opportunities for their families, but along the way, they face many obstacles. One of them is culture shock; they need to adopt new ha-bits. Children are very intelligent and can easily adapt to the environment where they are born or where they grow up.

culture which is totally different from what their parents knew.
Maybe you don’t want your chil-dren to abandon their roots and traditions, since those are the most valuable gifts you can give them. According to experts, keeping a child’s cultural heritage will reinforce in them their sense of identity and their self-esteem.
Raising bilingual and bicultural children is not an easy task. It requi-res a great deal of commitment from the parents. You must keep your tra-ditions, language, and history alive in your children.
In general, the goal is for you to continue speaking your native lan-guage around your kids, to read books in your language, and to visit your country from time to time with them so they can have an opportuni-ty to experience it firsthand.
TIPS FOR RAISING BICULTURAL CHILDREN No matter how old your children are, the first thing you have to do is develop an action plan which will include strategies, suited to your lifestyle, like the ones we present to you next:
Who is going to speak which language? If both parents are bilingual (or just one of them), it’s important that they agree on who is going to speak which language. If the-

How to get involved in your children’s education
Presented by Box Tops for Education®
There are many ways to partici-pate in your children’s education. One way is to attend parent/teacher conferences at your children’s schools. At these conferences, pa-rents are informed about their chil-dren’s performance and progress, or problems they are having with their studies. You can also attend conferences that relate to activi-ties planned for the school. Topics discussed may be related to school organization, repairs to the building, planning festivities, services for pa-rents, and extracurricular activities.
Each school has its own way of organizing these meetings; how-ever, the common goal is always to create and maintain communication with parents. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about your chil-dren’s academic needs.
Learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom. It’s important that you agree with the educational and formative policies that your child is expected to follow at school. This way, you will know which rules you need to enforce at home, in order to achieve continuous education.
Your actions count. Schools need the participation of parents. This is the reason behind Parents Teachers Associations, PTA’s, whose main func-tion is to raise funds to provide better financial resources and tools for learn-ing. Go to these meetings. You will be supporting your child, as well as his/her school and classmates.

Listen to what they have to say. Each school has its own way of holding meetings to present relevant issues to a designated number of participants.
Cross the bridge. When kids switch schools, they are not the only ones facing obstacles to fitting into a new environment. It’s natural that, as parents, we also have to overcome the difficulties that arise, and try to participate in school meetings as soon as possi-ble, in order to clearly understand the ideas and policies. Getting involved in school activities is one of the best ways we can support our children.
Ask for extra help. If your child requires special help in any subject (for example, science, mathematics, social studies, or art), ask the school about a program or courses available to help him/her.

Here are some suggestions for fill-ing your pantry with the ingredients you really need.
ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS IN YOUR KITCHEN
CHICKEN When I go to the supermarket, I like to buy a whole chicken and ask them to cut it into pieces for me, and that way it yields more. When I get home, I cook it and use it in different dishes like chicken tacos, chicken with green sauce or chicken with rice. There are so many things you can do with this ingre- dient. Let your imagination fly!
GROUND BEEF Ground beef is one of the least expensive
meats you can find. After buying it, I place por-tions of It into packages and I use it to prepare meatballs, hamburgers, ground beef casserole or lasagna.
RICE AND PASTA These ingre-dients can be very inexpensive, and you can enjoy them as a side dish or a main dish. For example, you can prepare a cold pasta salad or noodle soup for lunch or pasta with meat-balls for dinner. Rice is an ingredient Hispanics use a lot to create delicious meals like rice and beans. Choose whole grain versions when possible.
BEANS AND TORTILLAS In our Hispanic homes we usually accom-pany our meals
with cooked or canned beans and at the same time some delicious corn or flour tortillas. I suggest you buy a large package of tortillas and freeze them so you can always have some with every meal.
¡Echa a volar tu imaginación!
