IHC commitment All contracts identified and will be renewed in due course
but... Contracts still held by different organisations Opportunities for rationalising procurements (by IHC or jointly
with Higher Education) Timing, funding, identifying common need, common & unique users
Renewal subject to evaluation as ‘fit for purpose’ – Advisory Group role
Evaluation centres on realising benefits Equity – Geography, profession, organisation Increasing access – more users Patient care, lifelong learning
Realising benefits relies on marketing

Ron Pope, Lead Theatre Practitioner at Glan Clwyd Hospital is involved in improving patient safety during surgery as part of the Health Foundation’s Safer Patients Initiative (SPI ).
Ron visited the hospital’s library to find out about the latest research on the topic to help him produce the evidence in order to change practice. The library provides a full range of services, including loans from stock, journals, computer searching, Internet/ Intranet access and much more.
One aspect of the SPI initiative looked at the prevention of hypothermia in patients during operations. I f no preventative action is taken it is estimated that 85% of patients suffer from its effects. Adverse effects of hypothermia include:
Poor wound healing Cardiac arrest Blood loss Organ dysfunction/ failure Longer hospital stay
