SHOWCASING THAT HIS OLYMPIC GOLD at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver
was no fluke, Steve and his Night Train won first place at the first World Cup
Bobsled Competition this season.
Steve remarked, "Everybody expects
you to win, wondering if our Olympic
win was a fluke. For me to come back
and duplicate it nine months later is a
relief.” Steve held the German team to
second place—they provided heavy
competition even after the post-Olympics
retirement of their lead driver Andre

Seems there’s a new “American

PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC RED EYES or yellow eyes or eyes with dark
spots on the whites that look “stained” can all be severely emotionally
affected by the constant line of questioning from co-workers, friends,
and even strangers. “Did you get
enough sleep last night?”, “Did you
party too much last night?”, “Are you
smoking pot?”, “Are you tired?” Over
time repeated questions like these can
grind down self-esteem and in some
cases lead to social withdrawal. In gen-
eral, eye doctors do not take these
patients’ concerns seriously and often
insensitivity respond with “You’re

Fortunately, there is now a procedure that whitens eyes, removing
the excess red veins, yellow areas, and brown “stains”. Please visit

Setting an Example for Micaela andJordanna by Their Dad’s Training and Racing in Rowing Regattas
“I HAVE BEEN ROWING “UP A STORM” since returning from my rowing trip on
Thames River in England last summer. I rowed and raced in college when
I was at UCLA and at Edinburgh University in Scotland on a Rotary Scholarship. I
always missed the ability to race following the college experience. Since being
back on the water again in Marina del Rey, I was happy to learn that anyone over the age of 27 is automatically
called a “Master” and there are even people competing in their 70s and 80s!
I recognize that my renewed interest in rowing and competing also provides an important example for our
daughters Micaela and Jordanna, now almost 5 years old. They see their dad train and prepare for months to
attain a goal on race day. This is a very important example for the girls since life is now often about receiving
things instantly. For example, when most of us were kids and we needed a definition of a word, we pulled out
Webster’s Dictionary exerted a little effort to flip through the pages and look up the word. Now, students merely
type the word into the Internet and, voila, there is the definition in seconds.
In November and December I raced in two regattas: one in Marina del Rey and the other in Long Beach. Selina
and the girls were on hand as the best cheerleaders to root me on through the finish line. After the Long Beach
race, Jordanna and Micaela helped me “derig” the boat for transport back to Marina del Rey and “rig” it
together back home. It was a wonderful family experience! You can watch race video on our Facebook page

MY STORY
PLASTICS IN OUR KITCHEN are every-where from the Ziploc freezer bagsand Glad sandwich bags to Tupperwareand Rubbermaid juice boxes. It’s morethan just in the kitchen though—plasticis the most widely used material in theUnited States and is found in toys, office products, and even clothes! Some plastic food containers have
plastics that can transmit chemicals to your food (and you then eat or drinkthe chemicals) while other plastics are considered safe. All plastics are givena number from 1 to 7 which denotes a different type of resin in the plastic—flipover your plastic container and you’ll find a number inside a triangle on thebottom of the container. Here’s what the numbers mean:
1 (PETE chemical) Often for soft drink, water, and cough syrup. Safe for single use.
2 (HDPE) Examples are milk jugs, toys, liquiddetergent, and shampoo bottles. Safe formultiple uses.
3 (V or PVC) Meat wraps, cooking oil bottles, and plumbing pipes. NOT safe.
4 (LDPE) Cling wrap, grocery bags, sandwichbags. Safe for multiple uses.
5 (PP) Syrup bottles, yogurt cups, diapers.Safe for multiple uses.
6 (PS) Disposable coffee cups, clam shell-looking, styrofoam take out food containers, plastic knives, forks, and spoons. NOT safe.
7 (PC or PLA) older style baby bottles, 5gallon water bottles like at the water cooler, some reusable water bottles. NOT safe.
What to look for in the store or your kitchencabinets and why?

not only help patients
improve their lives, but
do so with a minimal
amount of disruption to

schedules. Years ago I
developed the method
to perform Keratoconus
treatments on both eyes on the same day—Holcomb C3-R®,
Intacs®, CK for astigmatism, and Visian ICL. This reduces
the “back and forth” to the office, so patients can get
back to their daily routine quickly and with the expectation
of improved eyesight!

The safest plastics are considered to be 2, 4,and 5. They don’t transmit any known chemicalto your food or drink. These containers arerecyclable too. Containers with 1 on it arefine for single use, but do not recycle these. They are meant for single use only since theplastic absorbs bacteria that are hard to clean.
Why avoid these plastics?
3 chemicals interfere with hormonal devel-opment and are carcinogenic
6 Styrene can leach out which is possiblycancer causing according to InternationalAgency for Research on Cancer.
7 Bisphenol which disrupts hormones and hasbeen linked to cancer and obesity.
How can you remember 2, 4 and 5? Try this littlerhyme: “Two, Four, and Five Will Keep Me Alive”.(…and yes, I did make that up) Say it at loud tohelp you remember.

Visian ICL Featured on CBS News Throughout the United States
MILLIONS OF PEOPLE suffer from the hassles and inconveniences of contact lenses maintenance, tearing a contact lens, losing a lens,
and the nuisance of depending on an aid to see properly. Glasses do not always provide comfortable vision and the peripheral vision can be
especially bad. That is the reason CBS News featured BWVI and the Visian ICL. They followed the story of our patient Melinda Reichenbach,
a nurse, who had a high prescription and was frustrated when “contacts break and a piece sticks in the eye and takes an hour or two to work
to get it out.” CBS followed her before and after the ICL insertion. Melinda does not need to worry about her traditional
contact lenses again. Click on www.ICLinfo.com to learn how Melinda regained her freedom!
