“The rapid economic growth of the 1960s was driven by expansion of energy-consuming industries based onlavish use of cheap Middle East oil.”
Petroleum refinement includes varioussteps: fractionation separates thehydrocarbon compounds within thecrude petroleum; conversion changesthe hydrocarbon structures; treatmentto remove impurities and furtherseparation processes; blending andformulating produces the finishedproducts. The products of refinementinclude fuel oils, kerosene, gasolineand lubricating oils. Refinedpetroleum is 2.4% of worldwideearnings from exports.
The Middle East has the highest netrefined petroleum exports (US$), thisregion is where most extraction occursand has the largest known oil reserves.
