From the simulated reality of TheMatrix to the rusty bars ofWentworth Prison,internationally renowned actorSteve Bastoni brought his years ofexperience to Broome earlier thismonth.

The Italian-born Australianactor worked in collaborationwith Mud and Saltwater ShortFilm Fest co-director ShayneThomson to conduct acting andfilmmaking workshops forschools and the public aroundBroome.

The three workshops, held at StMary’s College, Broome SeniorHigh School and Lotteries House,focused on acting, scriptwriting,filming, editing, uploading and

entering Mud and Saltwater. Bastoni said he enjoyed

working with Mr Thomson as hewas always looking foropportunities to join forces.

“I hope, by being here, I havehelped to spread the word aboutthe Mud and Saltwater filmfestival,” he said.

“It is exciting to see thepotential Mud and Saltwater hasto grow and I’m glad I can be apart of helping it.”

The Austrlian FilmInstitute-nominated actor runsthe Peninsula Short Film Fest,which is recognised as the largestshort film festival in Victoria,with the most recent eventrecording a total attendance of7000 people and 200 entries fromaround the world. However, the

visit wasn’t all work for Bastoni,who made the most of his time inthe Kimberley town.

“I really enjoyed seeing thecultural highlights of Broome,”he said.

“Sunset Pictures, Streeter’sJetty and Cable Beach were theparts of the town I enjoyed themost, and it was great to learnabout the history and heritage ofthis very unique town.”

Movies such as The MatrixReloaded, 15 Amore, The WaterDiviner and Macbeth andtelevision shows Prisoner,Neighbours, Hawaii Five-0, PoliceRescue and Wentworth made Bastoni a household name, butthe 51-year-old is not doneyet.

“I’m currently producing

a feature film called God’s Little Children, which I also will play the villain in,” he said.

“I also recently produceda web series calledWelfare, which I’m hopingto sell to a network, butit’s currently in theediting process.

“The series ofWentworth that I feature in is currently playingon Showcase on Foxtel too.”

Bastoni encouraged thetown’s residents toembrace their creativeside, with the Kimberley’sMud and Saltwater ShortFilm Fest on August 5 fastapproaching.

The Kimberley is braced forside-splitting laughter and gleeful gags as the MelbourneInternational Comedy Festival Roadshow arrives nextweek.

Australia’s biggest comedyfestival is returning to BroomeCivic Centre on Thursday, May 25 — 7pm for the 8pm show.

The event boasts a cast ofcomedy greats, talentednewcomers and internationalperformers including stand-up,sketch, slapstick and song actsfrom MC Cal Wilson, DanielleWalker, the UK’s Carl Donnelly,plus Daniel Connell and JoshEarl.

Wilson, who is originally fromNew Zealand, has made a namefor herself on television showssuch as Good News Week andThank God You’re Here.

She is joined by fellow Spicksand Specks rival Josh Earl, whohosts 3RRRFM’s Breakfasters.

RAW Comedy 2016 NationalChampion Danielle Walker willalso join the line-up as she brings

her dark and twisted everydayobservations to combine withcomedian Daniel Connell andEdinburgh Fringe royaltyCarl Donnelly.
