THE REVIEW
their understanding of mental health needs and
issues, and the prospect of their future support.
With 11 candidates on the agenda, there
was some concern that everything would come
off smoothly. Thanks to RSS’ Michelle Ciko,
Denise O’Brien, Tony Siracusa, and John
Paduano, the event was so well orchestrated that
it went without a hitch. After a brief introduction
by moderator, Bill DeVita, each candidate was
given a 12-15 minute segment to speak about
who they are, what they stand for, and how they
would respond to mental health issues if elected.
While speaking, the legislative district which
they represent was projected on a large screen.
Following their presentations, MHANYS
Executive Director, Glenn Liebman asked each to
respond to select questions submitted in advance
by audience members. Most questions pertained
to the candidate’s positions on the 85-90%
unemployment rate of persons with mental
illness, their view on the need for increased
housing and various community support services,
and where
mental health
stands as a
priority in these
tough budget
years.
The success
of Candidates
Night sets the
course for similar

RSS & MHANYS Sponsor “Candidates Night”
As the candidates for the NYS Assembly and
Senate scramble to make their pitch in the final
weeks before the November 6th election, eleven
came to The Desmond Hotel and Conference
Center on the evening of October 18th to address an
audience of mental health consumers and
professionals. The event, entitled, Candidates
Night, was sponsored by Rehabilitation Support
Services, Inc. (RSS) and the Mental Health
Association of New York State (MHANYS).
While the event was hosted by RSS and
MHANYS, Joe Lemmond can be credited as the
driving force behind it. The 125 seat capacity of
the Desmond’s Town Hall was completely filled,
leaving standing room only. The evening was
described as interesting, informative, and an
opportunity to evaluate the candidates regarding
