THE RECORD
REHOBOTH BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
Volume XXXVIII July, 2015 Number 4
Have you ever stopped to think what you might like to accomplish, if you could, in the final
years of your public ministry, if that happens to be your occupation?
Or, how you might contribute to the Church in such a way that would leave an indelible
legacy?
I will never accomplish what I am going to mention, but if I could, there would be two things I would like to see
happen in the local Church again. First, I would like to see the return of Bibles to Churches and to Christians’
lives again, and second, I would like to see Churches “clean up their language”, especially those in ministry and
those in leadership!
That’s the “New Movement” I would like to start….the Book Movement, and the Clean Air Act!
On the first, it’s interesting to me that the Gideons just announced giving away their 2 “billioneth” copy of the
Scriptures this year! We celebrate with them! It took the Gideons 93 years to distribute the first billion, between
1908 and 2001. The second billion was attained in less than 14 years, from 2002-2015! Gideons distribute over
80 million Scriptures annually, and more than two copies of the Scripture every second of every day!
While the Gideons are busy worldwide “giving away” copies of the Scripture in book form, we are seeing THE
BOOK disappear here in America in daily use, ministry, worship, etc. We’re now about convenience, speed,
public image, and anonymity. I just wonder, though, what would it be like to see Bibles everywhere again,
carried by the people of God in book form into our Churches for worship, and into our homes for daily reading
and study, and even on the job for a witness tool. That would be a movement I would like to start!
On the second, I have heard about all the profanity I care to hear among Church leaders and Christian men
today. It seems that this is now an important mark of our manhood, or even a mark of “authenticity” in our faith!
Really? Where is that in the Bible? Can you imagine Jesus using such language? Aren’t we still supposed to
seek to be like Him? Sorry, but I don’t buy the “copout”!
I have a note in the cover of my Bible. It reads, “If you can’t be interesting without profanity, then let’s face it;
you’re not that interesting.”
Profanity is still self-centeredness, a tool of control, an expression of pride, a bad habit, a sign of weakness, an
act of rebellion, and a form of sensuality! Let’s clean up the air around our Churches and Homes again! Let’s
replace profanity with praise and something that profits our audience! (Eph. 4:29)
Oh well, that’s the TWO new movements I would like to start! Honestly, I would settle for either ONE!
Yours, His!
