17th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics & High
Technology Material Science SPO 2016”
17th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics and High Technology Material Science -
SPO2016” was organized 27-30 October 2016 . Traditionaly, the conference was organized by
undergraduate and graduate students, current members of OSA, SPIE and EOS student
chapters/club. Event was held at Faculty of Physics, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv
(Ukraine).
As usual this year conference brought together scientists from different countries to find new
colleagues, share experience and demonstrate results of the latest researches in the field of optics
and high technology material science. This year the meeting took another kind of format and was
combined with Autumn school in optics and applied physics. Young people showed high level of
interest in optics and photonics and good knowledge of their scientific themes despite the age.
The conference program included the following sections: physics of condensed matter and
spectroscopy; laser physics and modern optoelectronics; applied optics and engineering;
biomedical optics and sensors technology.
This year conference was highly standard organized. SPIE members and other students of our
Chair of Optics took active part in SPO conference’s organizing as usual. That specialty made SPO
outstanding from all other scientific events in Ukraine. The idea to provide the part of such a
meeting for younger generation was well-accepted by all participants. We hope this initiative
would be supported in the future by different universities in Ukraine.
SPO 2016 was attended by scientists from Japan, France, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine
of course. The ideas in presented reports were expressed by both famous experts in optics and
photonics and young scientists including students.
This year all young scientists (undergraduate/graduate students) got possibility to be awarded
for the best presentation. Conference’s program committee chose the best participants and
awarded them with award diploma.
Students who have successfully presented their scientific researches and were awarded for the
best oral and poster presentations:
1. MSc. student Veronica Cazac “Phase Retrieval From Off-Axis Digital Holograms Of
Diffractive Optical Elements”.
2. MSc. student Artem Levchuk “Analysis dynamics of optical speckles in the study pure
liquids: formalism of the transparent matrix”.
3. MSc. student Valeria Karpovych “Kinetics of Laser-Induced Incandescence of Porous
Carbon Surface”.
Autumn school in optics and applied physics
From conference end the Autumn school in optics and applied physics has started. The main
idea was to increase knowledges of teenagers and to make them interesting in optics. During the
first school day pre-college students had possibility to communicate with conference participants.
The 40 pre-college student have been participated this event. 15 of them was from other
regions of Ukraine. The school included series of optical lectures and laboratory workshops of
light polarization and laser physics.
There were organized lectures which covered following themes:«Ray Optics», «Wave
optics», «Spectroscopy», «Laser physics», «Biomedical optics», «Colorimetry» and
«Optoelectronics».
Participants have been participated in laboratory workshop on spectroscopy and laser
physics. All students was present during lecture «USA study system: How to get PhD in United
States»
Traveling Lecturer Visit
On October, 2016 during SPO 2016 conference and Autumn school in optics and applied
physics was organized two lectures by Andrii Maksymov. He was invited by SPIE Chapter due to
Traveling Lecturer Visit program from Tulane University of Louisiana New Orleans, United States.
Pre-college student scientific research competition
Second time during winter our chapter with collaboration with Minor Academy Science of
Ukraine provided optics and laser physics pre-college student scientific research competition. The
teenagers (13 – 16) can do their projects on Chair of Optics with advising of chapter members
and write their small thesis.
The competition consists of three stages:
1) Correspondence evaluation of scientific work: During December chapter officers and
professors of Chair of Optics evaluated scientific works. (1-30 points)
2) Optics test: Competitors should pas test about optics. (1-30 points) — January 2017
3) Oral work presentations: Include speech about research (7 min) and time for questions
(3 min) (1-40 points) — February 2017
The best teenager’s papers have adverted by diplomas and some funding prizes by TSNUK
SPIE Chapter.
All attendances received certificate of participation.
As the result after competition many teenager involved in optics and two of them Vladyslav
Kovaletov and Oleksiy Ul'yanov joined to SPIE as Pre-College student members. The many pre-
college students discovered desire to continue their investigation next year.
Action - lecture «Mysteries of light »
11 March 2017 TSNUK SPIE Student Chapter organized Action - lecture «Mysteries of light ».
Before lecture we have organized presentation of SPIE abilities and perspectives in optics.
Andrii Shcherbakov made SPIE presentation. Professors Leonid Poperenko and Sergiy
Kondratenko told about optics in semiconductors and new materials.
At the end, Prof Vasyl Yaschuk provided lecture about lasers and their application in real life with
optical demonstrations
.
Optical game "What? Where? When?"
Between the conferences and outreach, events there has been organized an event called
THE OPTICAL GAMES. Of course, knowledge is important, but every scientist has to be good in
humor. There were involved students from other specialties for this event.
The task for participant was to prepare the poster and the short presentation of their team.
Another activity was to give the funny answers for optics questions. By the way, the best poster
you can see below and the slogan of winners was “Imagination is more important than
knowledge”
Local school visit and local Olympiads

Annual Chapter party
On June 30, 2017 a remarkable event happened at our TSNUK SPIE Student Chapter. More
than ten years of existence and collaboration of our Chapter were celebrated, that’s why
a pizza party was organized.
Year 2017 wasn’t an exception. Almost all Chapter members attended that event. We
summarized all the provided activities during last year, shared minds about the future of
the Chapter, its development and next projects. We sincerely welcomed our new Chapter
members and expect for their own professional development and future active
participation in SPIE projects. A traditional speech was announced by our Advisor prof.
Leonid V. Poperenko. He thanked all members for their participation in Chapter activities,
noticed the importance of students’ motivation for their future. He also thanked Chapter
Officers for the responsibility and regular attracting of new students to SPIE and Chapter
activities.
The party cannot be provided without pizza so the formal part was finished by a few toasts
and pizzas.
