Rice

Wholesale

Prices of all the types of local rice

varieties except raw red and raw white

have decreased further due to increased

supply of newly harvested stocks to the

market. Prices of both samba grade II and

nadu grade I have decreased by 3%. Price

range for samba grade II was Rs.115.00-

120.00/kg and the average price for nadu

grade I was Rs.98.00/kg. Price of nadu

grade II has decreased by 2% and the price

ranged between Rs.90.00-95.00/kg. Prices

of raw red and raw white have not

changed significantly during the week.

Compared to the same period of last year,

prices of samba grade II has increased by

26% and prices of all the other local rice

varieties have increased in the range of

2%-5%.

Retail

Prices of samba grade II, nadu grade I,

nadu grade II and raw red have decreased

in the range of Rs.1.00-2.00/kg. The

highest price decrease of Rs.2.00/kg was

reported for nadu (grade I and II). Price

ranged between Rs.105.00-110.00/kg and

Rs.100.00-104.00/kg respectively for nadu

grade I and II. Price of samba grade II and

raw red have also decreased by Rs.1.00/kg

and the price ranged between 120.00-

130.00/kg and Rs.98.00-110.00/kg

respectively. The highest price of

Rs.145.00/kg was reported for samba

grade I in Kirulapone, Nugegoda and

Kadawatha markets, while the lowest price

of Rs.98.00/kg was reported for raw white

and raw red in Nugegoda market. Limited

stocks of samba grade I and II were

available in most of the markets.

The average price of short grain paddy has

decreased considerably in the range of

between Rs.47.00-59.00/kg. The highest

price was reported from Kalawewa area,

while the lowest price was reported from

Polonnaruwa area.

20% and the price ranged between

Rs.210.00-350.00/kg.

between Rs.80.00-135.00/kg (Price ranges

were Rs.80.00-90.00/kg for Netherland

and Turkish stocks, Rs.90.00-100.00 for

Pakistan stocks and Rs.120.00-135.00/kg

Prices of most of the vegetable varieties

have decreased due to increased supply

with the commencement of Maha

harvesting.

With reference to upcountry vegetables,

prices of most of the vegetable varieties

have decreased. Prices of carrot and leeks

have decreased by 21% and 12%

respectively due to low quality stocks

from Welimada and Ragala areas. In

addition, prices of knolkhol and raddish

have decreased by 8% and 7%

respectively due to high supply from

Ragala area. Further, the price of beans

has decreased by 3% due to increased

supply from Bandarawela and Keppetipola

areas. However, price of cabbage has

increased by 41% due to low supply from

Nuwara Eliya areas.

Meanwhile, the price of tomato has

increased by 15% due to limited supply.

However, price of capsicum has decreased

by 11% due to high supply from Ragala

area.

Regarding lowcountry vegetables, prices

of most of vegetables have decreased. The

highest price decrease of 54% was

reported for brinjal due to high supply

from Embilipitiya and Thissamaharama

areas. Price of long beans has decreased

by 32% due to increased supply from

Thissamaharama area. In addition, prices

of snakegourd and ladies fingers have

decreased by 29% and 25% respectively.

High supply of snakegourd was recorded

from Hettipola and Mahiyanganaya.

Further, the prices of bittergourd and

pumpkin have decreased by 22% and 14%

respectively. Price of ash plantain has

decreased by 4% due to high supply from

Embilipitiya area. However, price of luffa

has increased by 20% due to the

availability of high quality stocks supplied

from Beruwala area and price of cucumber

has increased by 5% due to limited supply

from most of the major producing areas.

Meanwhile, the price of green chillies has

decreased by 35% due to increased supply

from upcountry producing areas. Further,

price of lime has decreased by 3% due to

high supply from Moneragala area.

in the range of Rs.2.00-11.00/kg.

However, the price of cabbage has

increased by Rs.5.00/kg.

Meanwhile, the price of tomato has

increased by Rs.49.00/kg and price of

capsicum has decreased by Rs.6.00/kg.

Regarding lowcountry vegetables, the

highest price decrease of Rs.101.00/kg

was reported for brinjal. Prices of rest of

the lowcountry vegetables have decreased

in the range of Rs.1.00-36.00/kg.

Meanwhile, the price of luffa has

increased by Rs.4.00/kg.

Further, the prices of green chillies and

lime have decreased by Rs.216.00/kg and

Rs.28.00/kg respectively.

due to availability of low quality and small

sized fruits in the market. Further, the

prices of all the varieties of banana except

anamalu and ambun have decreased in the

range of 1%-5% due to increased supply

from Embilipitiya and Jaffna areas.

Furthermore, prices of all the sizes of

pineapple have also decreased in the range

of 4%-10% due to high supply from

Gampaha, Kirindiwela and Minuwangoda

areas. In addition, prices of slimeapple and

papaw have decreased by 9% and 17%

respectively due to high supply with the

commencement of harvesting season.

However, the highest price increase of

24% was reported for avocado due to

limited supply. A price increase of 17%

was reported for woodapple due to limited

supply at the end of the harvesting season.

Further, prices of king coconut and

passion fruit have increased by 7% and

11% respectively due to high demand with

dry weather.

coconut has increased by Rs.4.00/fruit.

Prices of banana varieties, ambul, seeni

and kolikuttu have increased in the range

of Rs.2.00-3.00/kg, while prices of

anamalu and ambun have not changed

significantly. Further, prices of mango-

karthakolomban and passion fruit have

increased by Rs.3.00/fruit and

Rs.2.00/fruit respectively.

However, the price of papaw has

decreased by Rs.9.00/kg due to high

supply. Prices of all the sizes of pineapple

have decreased in the range of Rs.1.00-

2.00/fruit due to high supply. Prices of

slimeapple and orange have decreased by

Rs.2.00/fruit and Rs.1.00/fruit

respectively. In addition, price of imported

grapes have not changed significantly.

1,220.00/kg. Further, price of balaya,

paraw, mora salaya and thalapath have

increased by Rs.16.00/kg, Rs.3.00/kg,

Rs.3.00/kg, Rs.2.00/kg and Rs.2.00/kg

respectively and the prices ranged between

Rs.380.00-800.00/kg, Rs.1,000.00-

1,240.00/kg, Rs.900.00-1,200.00/kg,

Rs.200.00-300.00/kg and Rs.1,200.00-

1,400.00/kg respectively.

Rs.1.00/kg respectively and prices ranged

between Rs.600.00-800.00/kg,

Rs.1,200.00-1,500.00/kg, Rs.800.00-

1,000.00/kg and Rs.520.00-800.00/kg

The Food Commodities Bulletin is a

weekly publication containing information

relating to wholesale and retail prices of

selected food commodities in nine selected

markets in and around Colombo and main

markets in the major producing areas.

The information is analyzed and presented

as prevailing prices, price ranges, averages

and comparison of weekly prices. The

changes in prices reported are always in

relation to price prevailed during the

previous week unless otherwise stated.

The frequency of collection of wholesale

price information is twice a week (i.e.

Tuesday and Friday) while with retail

prices, it is thrice a week (i.e. Friday,

Monday and Tuesday).
