Rethinking the Qur'anTowards a Humanistic HermeneuticsSince the reign of the Abassid Caliph at Baghdad al-Mutawakil(847-861) more than eleven centuries ago, the discussionabout the nature of the Qurân has been blocked in favour ofthe Orthodox view that it is the exclusive verbatim Word ofGod. The human dimension, which includes the language aswell as the recipient, is almost absent. This book aims toreopen the debate by rereading the classical material andaddressing the present situation of Muslims in the context ofthe challenges of modernity.

The basic question is whether or not Muslims can modernizetheir societies without disregarding their own belief. Theimplicit answer is that this is indeed possible once the humandimension of the Qurân is regarded. So far, Muslims haveonly been able to rethink Tradition while the question of theQurân is untouched. Those who dared to open the questionwere condemned as heretics, and some of them wereexecuted. Nasr Abû Zayd, Ibn Rushd Professor at theUniversity for Humanistics (Netherlands), delves into theacademic adventure of reopening the debate that has beenblocked for so long.
