I. RESEARCH ORIENTATION
In the last 10 years, I have been actively involved in the identification,
pharmacological screening and evaluation of the therapeutic benefits inherent in
the local medicinal plants locally used by Yoruba traditional healers in the local
management of diabetes mellitus, obesity, hyperlipidemia and other endocrine
disorders. The reason for this was borne of out the fact that the incidence and
prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its associated neuro-endocrine disorders in the
world and indeed, in developing nations, such as Nigeria, is fast increasing at an
alarming rate. For example, in the year 2000, the global prevalence of diabetes
mellitus was estimated to be 170 million sufferers and this figure is expected to
double by the year 2030 (Wild et al., 2004). In addition to this, the attendant
complications of diabetes mellitus account for the high mortality and morbidity
associated with the disease. However, despite the scientific breakthrough that has
been recorded with the orthodox management of the disease, the prevalence,
morbidity and mortality of the disease continue to rise. This necessitated the
setting up of a fact-finding expert committee by the World Health Organization
(WHO) in 1979 which was mandated to investigate and form policies that would
help in stemming the prevalence of diabetes mellitus globally. The WHO expert
committee then recommended that indigenous medicinal plants in different
countries of the world should be investigated for their antihyperglycemic
potentials (WHO, 1980). Also, many of the conventional antihyperglycemic
remedies are associated with intolerable and sometimes, life-threatening side-
effects which often result in poor drug adherence. For all these stated reasons,
over the last half a decade, I have been involved in the screening and
identification of indigenous medicinal plants with antihyperglycemic, anti-obesity
5
and antihyperlipidemic activities using standard pharmacological procedures. In
addition, efforts have been channeled towards investigating the antihyperglycemic
mechanisms and standardizing the appropriate and effective dosages of these
medicinal plants, particularly, flora that are of Southwest Nigeria origin. Further
to these, I have also been involved in drug discovery and development from some
of these plants. One of particular interest is the recent discovery of a new
antihyperglycemic compound named erinidine. Erinidine is a bisindole alkaloid
isolated from the aqueous seed extract of Hunteria umbellata (K. Schum.) Hallier
f. (family: Apocynaeceae) and whose chemical structure as well as its
antihyperglycemic profile has been investigated. This compound’s
pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile in an animal model is currently
being investigated, after which clinical trials of it will begin.
