Carlos Eduardo Japiassú is a professor of criminal law and
international criminal law at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He lectures
on a regular basis on the topics of criminal law and international human rights law at
the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France), the Université Montesquieu
Bordeaux IV (France), and the University of Warwick (United Kingdom). Japiassú
holds several law degrees awarded by the State University of Rio de Janeiro—a bachelor
of law, a master of laws, and a Ph.D. in public law.
Japiassú has served in numerous domestic and international organizations, including
the International Association of Penal Law (deputy secretary general) and its Brazilian
National Group (president), the Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences
(director), the Brazilian Bar Association (member of Bar Exam Expert Committee),
and the National Council of Criminal and Penitentiary Policy in the Brazilian Ministry
of Justice (member). He is also a consultant with the International Monetary Fund on
projects in his area of expertise.
