May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do
and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
We continue to pray for those of our Parish who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. This past weekend and today and next weekend,
the Elect will go through the Scrutinies. The initiation rites of the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent don’t have the most
comforting of names. On these days we engage the elect in rites and prayers called scrutinies and exorcisms. The first connotes
probing and critical examination of one’s life, and the second—well, let’s just say many of us have had nightmares because of what
Hollywood thinks exorcisms look like. Yet if we understand the history of these initiation rites, we’ll see that they are both more
pastoral and comforting than we may think.
What does this mean for us then? I think the scrutinies give us three points to remember:
The scrutinies and their accompanying exorcisms are a series of rites that cannot be condensed in time; they need time “to
work.” Nor should we diminish their ritual symbols of silence, posture, litany, and hand laying.
The scrutinies focus as much on the grace of God as on the sin of humanity. We can’t truly call a scrutiny a Christian rite of
initiation unless our self-searching leads to acknowledgment and praise of Christ who saves us.
The scrutinies are for the elect, not for the baptized, for we believe that baptism matters. That is, when one is baptized, one is
freed from the power of sin. The baptized are no longer enslaved by Satan. Those who have not yet entered the waters of the
font are still vulnerable; they have not yet been clothed with Christ; they have not yet been reborn as new creations. That is why
those who have already been released from the devil’s grip are able to pray these scrutinies and exorcisms for the elect.
During times when we wish to express repentance and especially during Lent, it is customary to pray the seven penitential psalms.
They are Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, & 143. The penitential designation of these psalms dates from the seventh century.
Prayerfully reciting these psalms will help us to recognize our sinfulness, express our sorrow and ask for God’s forgiveness.
Q. I've noticed that restaurants
and grocery stores advertise
specials on expensive types of
fish and seafood on Fridays
during Lent. Some of my
Catholic friends take advantage
of these deals, but somehow I
don't feel right treating myself
to the lobster special on Fridays
during Lent.
A. While fish, lobster and other
shellfish are not considered meat
and can be consumed on days of
abstinence, indulging in the
lavish buffet at your favorite
seafood place sort of misses the
point. Abstaining from meat and
other indulgences during Lent is a
penitential practice. On the
Fridays of Lent, we remember the
sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday
and unite ourselves with that
sacrifice through abstinence and
prayer.
We have had many faith growing opportu-
nities recently at St. Francis and the
mission was a great start of Lent. Many of
you may be wondering how to keep the fire
going since the mission. You are encour-
aged to attend a couple hours reflecting on
the mission and asking God in what ways
He wants you to grow from here. Please
consider attending the Parish Mission
Night of Discernment on Sunday, March
18 at 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the church.
Another special way to grow this Lent is at
our Parish Lenten Evening of Reflection at
the White House Retreat Center. This
special night will be held on Sunday,
March 25 at 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Reserva-
tions will be taken only until March 15, so
register soon! You can register and pay
online at our website or using the form
found in the bulletin. Join me, Fr. Pollman
and Deacon Sinak as we discuss the holiest
week of the year and ways you can enter
into this special time in the Church.
Spending Time with God in Prayer.
Take advantage of the Lenten Opportunities. Attend an
extra Mass each week. Go to confession every other
week. For a full list of Lenten Opportunities, see page 7
of the bulletin.

Recap for week of 2/25/18
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…”
- John 3:16
Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of
His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God
for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own
precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and
generous with our God-given gifts. That we nurture and
develop them and return with increase.
Please consider switching from paper envelopes to giving online.
It helps our parish plan and budget, while ensuring continued
support when parishioners travel. Visit www.sfastl.org and click

Parish Mission
Every single day of our lives, we have the freedom to make lots
of choices. We can choose to share the love and truth of God in
different situations, making the conscious decision to choose
goodness and light. On the other hand, we can choose to reject
God as the ancient Israelites did before going into exile. The lay
faithful have the beautiful blessing of sanctifying the
world. While priests and religious sanctify the Church, the lay
faithful can sanctify the world in its increasing secularity. What
does this mean for us? It means choosing prayer, silence,
patience, compassion, and selfless love over unnecessary noise,
anger, self-gratification, and individualism. Choose wisely in
each situation and help lead people to encounter God through
you. archstl.org/dynamic
The Parish will be praying the Prayer to St. Michael the
Archangel at the end of all Masses. It can be found on the back
of the Breaking Bread Hymnal.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Please consider honoring the Blessed Mother by having the
Lady of Fatima Statue in your home for one week. It is a
wonderful way to show your love for Mary and ask for her
blessings. For additional information or to schedule a week call
Chris Cuneo at 846-4439.

We know that students learn so
much more when they are
engaged in the learning.
Recently our youngest pre-
school students participated in a
Breakout. This activity is like
an Escape Room in a box.
There is a treasure inside a box
covered in many locks.
Students have to solve clues to
open the locks and reveal the
prize. Mrs. Paeper’s class was
showing off their knowledge of
letters, numbers, patterns, and
the Rainforest when they
revealed their treasure of Rain-
forest animals.
During our parish mission, we previewed an engaging faith
formation program we’re bringing to St. Francis next year called
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This Montessori-based
program began in Italy in the 1950’s, was brought to the US in
the 1980’s and is currently used in 37 countries. It’s a hands-on
experiential approach to enrich the faith formation of our
students. We previewed this program during our parish mission
when the kids in the learning commons were introduced to the
region where Jesus lived and worked while he walked on Earth.
We used topographical maps, dioramas, and models to help
younger students have a visual to associate with these places they
will be hearing about in the scriptures during Lent and especially
during Holy Week. Mr. Herries then added a STREAM twist
when he got out our new Virtual Reality goggles and allowed the
students to “visit” the Jerusalem of today to see what it looks like
now. During our third trimester electives, some students will be
creating materials for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as a part
of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. (pictured below)
Parking Lot Safety on Fish Fry Fridays: We have had two near misses in the past two weeks of children getting hit by cars on the
south parking lot (near the rectory) on Fish Fry Fridays. Please, please, please do not move your car on that lot between 3:00 and
3:10 while we get children into their vehicles. If you arrive during that time, we're going to hold you in the back of the lot until we
load the cars. If you're leaving during that time, please stay in your car until we've loaded the cars and have waved you forward to
go. If you are a parent, please try to get your child in the car and safely seat belted quickly so that we aren't holding up others any
longer than necessary. For the safety of all involved, please either avoid the parking lot between about 2:55 and 3:10 or wait patient-
ly for those moving the traffic to wave you forward. A few minutes of inconvenience is worth a life. Thank you for your support.
Please join us at the White House Retreat Center for the 2018 Lenten Evening of Reflection on March 25th from 4-9 p.m. The cost
is $15 per person. Dinner is included. Adults only. Dress for walks between buildings and outdoor reflection. Reservations are due
by March 15. Put your registration and a check made out to SFA in an envelope marked 2018 Lenten Evening of Reflection and
place in Sunday Collection or bring it to the Rectory Office.

We hope that you’ve noticed the new lighting upgrades inside
Church. These upgrades started last summer and were made
possible by the generosity of your support through the Beyond
Sunday Campaign. All the new lights are LED, they produce
light approximately 90% more efficiently than incandescent
light bulbs and they can last as long as 25,000 hours. With this
information we are happy to report the savings we have already
began to notice. Over the 6 month period from July 2017
through January 2018 our electric bill for the church has
decreased $3,190 or 12% from the same 6 month period a year
ago (2016-2017). Again, we thank everyone for their support in
the Beyond Sunday Campaign as we now have better quality
lighting for the church at a lower cost.
We are also in the process of replacing approximately 2,000
fluorescent lights with new LED lights in the school buildings.
The new lights use approximately half the wattage compared to
the old lights. This process includes removing the ballast that
was required for the fluorescent lights and installing the new
LED lights. This is not a simple task but with the help of
wonderful SFA volunteers the project is over half completed!
The best part is through Ameren Missouri rebates many of the
bulbs are FREE! We are excited to report back to our parishion-
ers with the savings we will see with these new lights. Up next
the Rectory!
All Volunteers Welcome! Thank you for sharing your Time,
Talent, and Treasure with SFA Parish! Reservations required
and due by April 6th. Adults only. Complete this registration
and drop off at the Parish Office or in the Sunday Collection.

The annual Food for the Hungry Challenge is running through
April 30th. All the money collected will go to our food pantry.
The need for food continues to grow as we are getting more
requests for help daily.
We will provide special envelopes for the challenge. They will
be on the food baskets at all entrances to the church. We ask
that you make your check payable to St. V incent de Paul
Society and mark in the memo line Food Pantry. We also ask
that you continue to donate food to our pantry.
As you might know the State of Missouri has a Food Tax
program. Every dollar you donate they will give you 50% off
your tax liability. For example if you give $200 you will get
$100 off your taxes owed. This is a win win situation for both
you and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We will provide you
with a tax form at the end of the year.
We want to thank you for all your help in the past and also in
the future. If you have any questions please contact our
treasurer Jim Hahn at 892-2392. Thank you again for your
continued support.
