Recently, we purchased some privacy Arborvitae

trees to separate the property line of the rectory with our neighbor and to continue the line of trees along the

pathway between Elm Street and Halsted Street.

If you would like to donate one or more of these trees in

loving memory of your parents in honor of Mother’s

Day or Father’s Day, please contact the Parish

Center. We will have small plaques placed at the base of each tree with their names. Thank you for your interest

in keeping our property beautiful.

Each tree is $95.

“There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of work. This is where the respect and the love and the

CANCELLATIONS

Our Saint Mother Teresa Food Pantry will reopen on Wednesday, June 3rd starting at 10:30am-12:00Noon.

All our volunteers will be following all the safety guidelines which have been put forth by the State of New Jersey.

We are very grateful to those who have made donations to our pantry during this Wuhan Virus

epidemic. Right now, the best way to support our food pantry is

financially; we accept Walmart gift cards along with Weis Supermarket or ShopRite gift cards. You may also make a direct contribution online or send a check

(or drop one off) at the Parish Center Office during the week from 9:00am-12:00Noon.

Thank you!

Special thanks to all of you who have continued to support your parish family. With the help of our PPP Loan, we are able to continue paying our employees and making sure the lights are not turned off! If you have not yet helped us, you may do so online, send via USPS or drop it off at the Parish Center at 22 Halsted Street during the week from 9:00am-12:00Noon. You can continue to support your parish family

by making a one time or weekly online (secure) donation. Just scan this code (or if you have an Apple phone, you only have to take a picture of this code) and follow the directions.

Thank you for your continued generosity!

Parish center closed

By mandate of the Bishop, the Parish Center Offices

ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Salvation of souls

Although Confirmation and First Holy Communions have been postponed, we are still in the process of making the necessary preparation for when the ban is lifted and we are able to open our church. In the interim, there are still some outstanding issues: 1.) If you have not picked up your child’s First Holy Communion Banner Kit, please do so this week at the Parish Office. 2.) Confirmation students, if you have not handed in the following paperwork at the Parish Office, please do so this week:

a.) Sponsor Certificates b.) Report on the Saint chosen for Confirmation c.) Letter to Father ST requesting to be confirmed d.) Community Service hours completed

3.) Grades 1-7, need to submit their homework assignments even if they are incomplete. This work can be dropped off at the Parish Office this week. The Parish Office is open Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:00Noon. If you have any questions about these requirements, please call the Faith Formation Office at: 973.383.8413. We do not want to add any undue pressure on your families, but we also want to make sure that no children are left behind and are able to celebrate these beautiful sacraments when we are finally allowed to open our church doors again. Know that we are praying for you and your families until we are reunited once again as the family of faith here in Newton.

No More Second Collections

The Don Bosco Columbiettes #7784 are sponsoring a campaign to seek our Blessed Mother’s intercession

for the Salvation Of Souls. Please support this endeavor to pray

ONE MILLION HAIL MARYS.

The campaign will continue until May 31, 2020.

You can e-mail your tallies to: [email protected] or write the number on

a slip of paper and drop it into the container by Mary’s statue.

The tally so far is: 1,093,487

A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She walked around to look at the artwork. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl replied, “They will in a minute.” Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Christian school for lunch. At the head table was a large pile of apples. Someone had written a note and placed it next to the apples. It read, “Take only one, God is watching.” Moving through the line, to the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One little boy wrote his own note and snuck it next to the cookies, “Take all you want, God is watching the apples.”

Quarantine humor

As a result of your great generosity, we have eliminated almost all second collections for the past four years. Because of this great success, we are planning to continue this special collection again this year even though our doors have still been closed by the government and diocese.

In a few weeks, each family will receive a letter with a special envelope requesting a yearly contribution of one hundred dollars ($100) or more, to once again eliminate most second collections.

I am more than confident that your weekly contributions will continue as they have in years past and we will be able to accomplish more and more through your generosity and commitment to your parish church as we strive to reach our weekly goal of $10,000.

Thank you for all that you do for your parish family.

What have you been doing?

When so many people have been furloughed or lost their jobs and many businesses have had a hard time keeping afloat because their base of customers has been depleted, I have gone out of my way to support these local restaurants and smaller stores in order to help them survive through this imposed quarantine and shut-down. This has also been the time for many people (including myself) to take inventory of our homes, our relationships and our faith. To say the least, many people (priests included) have had a lot of “downtime” to be at home and some of us alone.

In my attempt to reach out to my brother priests, who also have been directly affected by the Wuhan Virus shut-downs, I initiated an Evening Prayer via Zoom for two reasons; first to gather as brother priests to pray for our communities and secondly, to offer an opportunity to support one another by our fraternity and brotherhood. It certainly has been a learning experience, not only to navigate through a new software, but to make sure everyone is on-site and not muted. Then comes the challenge of more than one person speaking at a time and trying to moderate everyone trying to speak at once. The final challenge is not to get overheated during debates on current issues and ecclesiastical difficulties that we all face.

I know you will find it hard to believe, but I am pretty (in the words of my Fifth-Grade teacher Mr. Roy) “loquacious.” I constantly remind myself, to not only moderate the room, but to give everyone a chance to speak freely, openly and without any fear of recrimination. Interestingly enough, we have invited other priests to join us, but it seems to return to the original five that can handle such psychological prompting and moral theological banter.

This week, I thought it might be interesting to know what I have been doing during the past eight weeks of confinement and ask you the same question. Unlike many of you, I live alone and for the most part, I thank Almighty God for this gift. I actually enjoy being alone. I am one of those odd people that genuinely enjoy going to a restaurant and eating alone (as long as they have cloth napkins and tablecloths). In recent times, I have been asked: “Aren’t you bored?” To which I have to laugh, because it seems that I have more things which I am involved in, things that have taken a back seat

over the past few years, like cleaning my basement, cleaning my office and even emptying the very few remaining boxes which I came with nearly five years ago. But the greatest challenge for me is to find a new “norm” of Priesthood which does not involve face to face interaction with parishioners, burying the dead, visiting the sick, marrying couples and baptizing children.

As I have often quoted, the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our faith. However, now it is very difficult to put that maxim in the context of celebrating Mass in private. I know the old carefully rehearsed and pious answers of how all the Angels and Saints are present at every Mass. Still, it is hard to have a personal, face to face relationship with bodiless creatures and men and women who exist on another plain of reality.

One of the questions I posed to our small priestly group was “What is it that you miss the most during this quarantine?” To which I responded: “My family of faith.” Saint Joseph Parish Family is hard to exist without the family. Being separated from you, my family of faith, has been very difficult for me over the past several weeks. It is almost like being in a long-distance relationship with someone where you can talk on the phone, write emails and even send cards, but the personal face to face interaction is lacking and makes it difficult to sustain.

That is why I have been reaching out to the “mature” of our parish family. I called for just a few minutes and reminded them that I am praying for them, thinking of them and missing them. It is truly amazing how this short telephone call has been met with such enthusiasm and genuine appreciation. We often overlook the effects of loneliness and isolation on the elderly who are confined to their homes or apartments at this time.

I have also tried to keep my weekly bulletin going with contemporary issues which I have been asked to address honestly and prudently. For the most part, I usually get the first part down at least. I also have taken the time to read each and every email, letter, card and note which I have received from so many people who are sending in their generous donations to our church while it is still closed.

Article continued...

I am truly honored and humbled by so many people’s generosity, thoughtfulness and prayerful remembrance.

So, to answer that question “What have you been doing?” I have to honestly answer “A lot!” There never seems to be a day that comes and goes that I have not driven my staff crazy because now I am looking into how things have been done in the past and how we can be more efficient and effective in the future. But even in the midst of new and old routines, the one I miss the most includes all of you.

I remember when I first arrived nearly five years ago, I remember looking out into the new congregation of faces and thought to myself, “How I will ever remember their names? Well, nearly five years later, I have encountered so many of you each and every week, I got to know your names, your children’s faces, your newly married children and unfortunately, even had the difficult task of burying your loved ones. In each of these encounters, I have come to know and love my parish family of Saint Joseph.

I remember when I first came to the diocese, after serving in my former bishop’s office for nearly fifteen years, I knew that my true calling as a priest was with and for the people. I truly believe, now from a lived pastoral experience, that being with the people, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, that I have come to “smell like my sheep.” The odor is kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness mixed with emotional and psychological pain and even great challenges to my personality, theology and philosophy. But in all, like most families, we have come to know and love each other and THIS is what I miss.

So, if you are home feeling alone or maybe even isolated, know that you are not alone. You may be separated from your family of faith, but hopefully, that will change in the coming weeks. I read that our neighboring dioceses are starting to implement the gradual return to our “normal” church schedules. Until that time comes for our parish family, I want you to know that you are in my daily prayers, my daily private Masses as I pray with and for you.
