Ms. FrazierI am very excited
to teach STEM because it gives students a way to learn about science through investigation and inquiry rather than from a textbook
STEMStem is designed to reinforce material
learned in scienceStudents work in groups of 3-5 to collaborate
and solve a problem in the real worldStudents are given a problem that relates to
a topic from their science classThey take the problem and design and
construct a working model of their solutionStudents then present the idea to the class as
well as demonstrate how their model is the best solution to the problem
Examples of projects8th grade is designed and built a model of the
newest roller coaster for Six FlagsThey used equations learned in class to
calculate the speed, acceleration, potential energy, and kinetic energy of their roller coaster as well as implemented Newton’s 3 laws
Examples of projects7th grade designed and built a model of a dam
along a river and described the benefits and concerns of the dam on its surrounding ecosystems
They presented their model to the Core of Engineers and American Wildlife Association (class) to demonstrate how their model is the safest for ecosystems after a dam is built
Examples of Projects6th grade designed and constructed buildings
that could survive an earthquakeStudents chose the best type of soil to hold
up a building after a fault is created Students also chose the best type of material
for the building to withstand an earthquakeThe groups presented their model to the city
government (class) and demonstrated why their building is the best fit for a new building in the city
