Word of the Week: Witness
Sacred Heart Herald Friday 24h January 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our KS2 choir sang beautifully at Mass on Sunday and were once again great ambassadors for our school.
We started the week with our Spring into Learning parental sessions and the children and staff enjoyed sharing their learning with you.
This morning our whole school enjoyed watching Robin Hood in pantomime which we are linking to our Talk for Writing class work. Later in the afternoon children in each class shared and celebrated their learning activities for Chinese New Year (Saturday 25 January) in a whole school assembly.
I am very pleased that children at Sacred Heart are consistently given so many enriching opportunities to engage them in their learning. When we welcomed other Headteachers and a Merton School Improvement Partner to our school on Friday 17th January as part of 'Peer Review', they interviewed a range of pupils across the school. They asked children questions about their learning, whether they feel safe happy and cared for and what they like about Sacred Heart. Our visitors all felt that pupil voice and leadership was exceptionally strong, demonstrated through children's involve-ment and opportunities to represent and express themselves at Sacred Heart. The visitors interviewed the Year 5 children who led our Sacred Heart General Election in December about the impact of their learning and their role in leading this. Our School Council and Eco reps were able to talk about the impact of their work as well as an-swer questions around safeguarding and bullying. Our visitors will be joining us for a second day later this month, in which we will be looking at 'Excellence in teaching and learning', particularly focussing on assessment for learning in the classroom.
On Monday 27th January we will hold a mufti to support Australia, in particular for a charity supporting the care and preservation of koala bears so remember to bring in £1 and dress in green/gold or any Australian themed attire. Have a great weekend Lorraine Dolan-Walsh

Facing Our Fears
I have always been scared of snakes. At scouts and cubs they always did a ses-sion on reptile handling and I never got involved until now. After our visit from Nick Carter who spoke about facing your fears I decided I was going to be brave and face mine. Last Wednesday when I went to Scouts we had a reptile handling session and I held an albino python. I was okay when they were walking round with them, they didn’t look very big but when it came up close to me my heart was pounding. I thought it would be really slimy and slippery and cold but it wasn’t. It felt quite warm and leathery, they put it in my lap – afterwards I felt really proud of myself.
Max—Year 6 We will definitely send this image off to Nick to see if Max could be sent a deep fear T-shirt.
This week in St Josephine Class What would it be like to win a golden ticket? This week, in St Josephine Class, we have been taking on the roles of different characters to imagine how they would act and feel. In Guided Reading, we did an activity called `Hot seating`. This is where one pupil pretends to be the character in question and the class asks different questions about how they are feeling, why they are feeling that way and the choices they will make because of this. This allows us to think at a deeper level about the story, it helps us to understand the authors’ choices and leads to our future story writing being more detailed, gripping and exciting.
Isabella (Speaking as Charlie Bucket) – “If I won a golden ticket I would feel over the moon. It wouldn’t just make my life better but the lives of everyone in my family. We are so poor you see and a lifetime supply of chocolate and sweets would mean we never go hungry again!”
Summer (Speaking as Grandpa Joe) – “If Charlie was to win I would be filled with energy. I could finally get out of this bed and go on an adventure. It would be so exciting to see that beautiful factory again after so many years. “
Year 6 at the Globe Last Friday Year 6 spent the day along the Southbank of the Thames. We spent some time exploring the river side and looking at the sights in order to put into context our topic on William Shakespeare. As well as visualising how the landscape has changed from Shakespearean times to our now modern built up city the children were able to explore the Globe Theatre.
“I was fascinated by all of the names around the outside of the Globe – so many people helped to re-create what it was like so we can experience it.” Joon Sung “To begin with when we got to the Globe I was a bit intimidated because I have never been anywhere like it before but I am glad we went because I learnt so much.” Leighton. “It was really cool that it did not have a roof.” Josh M “The drama workshop was amazing.” Min Jun and James
“It looked really old but I did not realise it was a copy because the real one burned down.” Camron “We learned so much about what it was really like in Shakespeare’s time which really helped us to understand more.” Eva
“I liked standing on the real stage at the theatre.” Marusha “I really liked seeing behind the stage and where the King and Queen would sit. It was all very exciting.” Lizzy “I really liked learning about all the secrets of the Globe Theatre; like how they used trap doors which symbolised heaven and hell – it was really cool to see.” Lucia
“The Globe has exquisite decorations and lots of detailed pictures unlike normal theatres. It was great to discover secrets from behind the stage.” Jacob
