In 2012, the Free Press profiled the neighborhoods around three Detroit school campuses,
Cody on the west side and Denby and Osborn on the east side, to chronicle the dangers
students faced on their way to school. This spring, the Free Press returned to those
neighborhoods to gauge the citys progress on making neighborhoods safer. Data show the
situations are improving, albeit very slowly. New streetlights are up and working across the
city, where thousands of old streetlights were out. But crime and blight continue to plague
Detroit neighborhoods. The maps below show the number of abandoned buildings that
remain in these neighborhoods as well as the change in number of crimes in 2011-14.
