Saint Canera, patroness of Irish Sailors, is sitting in a boat with an oil lamp, the symbol of wisdom and virginity, with a monastery on an island in the background where she sought spiritual rest. She was refused

entrance to the island but was given Eucharist just before she died. The shamrock speaks to her Irish ancestry.

R E F L E X I Ó N

R E F L E C T I O N

Fourth Sunday of Advent

Signs are very important. In the same way we

understand language, signs can sometimes pro-

vide powerful messages and sometimes they

communicate even more than words do. A per-

son in love waits for a sign of love of his or her

beloved. Someone who has a loved ill seeks

signs to give him or her hopes of life. A person

walking through the desert keeps his eyes open

for signs of water or life. Give me a sign, we tell

God many times.

There are people who see signs of God in

things that are not really such signs; in other

words, they might see a sign in something that is

clearly the opposite of what God may want. We

seek signs, symbols, lights to show us where to

go or where we are heading; and sometimes this

search is an escape from the need to make a de-

cision. We expect God to give us a sign about

what we should do with our life and, since we

don’t see any, we don’t do what deep in our

heart we feel should be done. Perhaps what we

should see is that the sign is precisely the thirst

or desire of the heart, the inclination to doing

something in the service of others.

This reflection was taken from Nuestra Parroquia.

Diocesan Stewardship Message

When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph re-solved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as

open to the leading of the Holy Spirit!

Prepare the way of the Lord . . .
