In the today’s Gospel from Mark (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15,
21-23), Jesus is once again confronting the Pharisees and the scribes over apparent violations of Jewish
purity laws. His disciples were accused of not wash-ing their hands before they ate a meal. Jesus quotes Isaiah to these ex-
perts in the law (the Pharisees), “This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts,” (Isaiah 29:13) and says, “You disregard
God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” (Mark 7:8) The Phari-sees did not mind hearing about sin, as long as it didn’t apply to them.
They were righteous, but self-righteously so. They honored their self-images and projections and their own traditions, but did not see the hy-
pocrisy of their own actions. As disciples, we are also challenged by this
Gospel to evaluate our own beliefs and perceptions in light of following God’s way in every aspect of our lives. Then, we are invited to see if we
live these out in our lives as well instead of saying we follow God’s way and then judging others for an apparent lack of following a Christian life-
style. For myself, this stings a bit. I cherish the words of Jesus and try to
live them out each day, yet I find moments when I judge others unfairly, when really I need to challenge myself to live out God’s way better in my
life. Must I not be vigilant that my heart is in the right place? A secret consolation is this: if our hearts are stung by Jesus’ challenge to the
Pharisees, our hearts are almost healed. But, we must be constantly vigi-lant in our lives to be “doers of the word and not hearers only.” (James
1:22) A gifted and forceful woman once told me of a horrifying revela-
tion. She realized at prayer that she was the Pharisee, she who judged others, she who did not trust God. What a lovely moment. If you think
you are a Pharisee, you most surely are not. If you think you are not, watch out.
