The Rhythm Of Parish Life

As I have mentioned before in the bulletin, living the Paschal Mystery is, often times, very hard. The

dying and rising rhythm of life can cause pain as new challenges present themselves. There is a saying in

ministry, based upon the model Jesus gave us when he chose 12 Apostles: "Always be looking for people

who can lead people to the Lord." When a ministry leader is constantly looking for gifted people and those

people are mentored into leadership, there is never a shortage of fresh ideas rooted in the Lord. The leaders

recognize that, one day, they will also grow and will be called to go deeper. Thus, dying and rising. Or, to

put it another way, in order to remain vibrant, to grow in faith, and to remain inspired, things must die or

new things must be attempted in order for rising to occur. Theologically, we can think of Good Friday.

Jesus' death was exceedingly painful. No one understood, initially, why he had to die and in such a brutal

way. But, in order for us to be saved through the Resurrection, Jesus had to die. There is no rising without

first dying. If reading about dying and rising has made you think of our recent staff members who are no longer on

staff, good! We have thanked Jim Kelly and we thank him again today. The new music ministry torch has

passed onto musicians whom he has worked with for years at St. Cecilia. We wish Jim continued success at

his full-time job. We thank Carol Klinger who was on staff as our religious education secretary. Due to

lack of enrollment, which I spoke about at Masses not too long ago, there is no longer a need for an RE

secretary. We hope to see Carol again soon when the Tall Ship Windy season ends for the year. We thank

Audrey Taylor who was on staff as our bulletin editor. We are trying out a new idea for getting the bulletin

ready for publication and, as such, Audrey's position as bulletin editor was phased out. To all three, thank

you for how you have ministered to God's people.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Lisa Mersereau

Responding to Domestic Violence in Our Community

On Saturday and Sunday,

December 8 and 9

Fr. Charles W. Dahm, O.P.,

Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago, will preach

at all the Masses at St. Cecilia parish.

Although largely unseen, domestic violence is rampant in the United States, including in our

community. Calls about domestic violence are the most frequent received by local police.

Fr. Dahm will speak with those parishioners interested in learning more about domestic

violence and/or helping our parish respond to the needs of victims in our community as

sensitively and compassionately as we can.

When: Thursday, December 13

Time: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Where: Bernardin Room

5 Reasons to Stay Until the End of Mass

It is an interesting phenomenon. An isolated incident is not that concerning to me. But when half the parishioners

have disappeared to the parking lot before the closing song has ended, it makes my heart a little sad. I want to

say, "You have Jesus inside you! Take a minute to talk to him, to thank him, to love him!". Here are reasons I

stay until the end of Mass:

1. Communion Is About Communing:

When we receive communion, we receive Jesus himself. When we eat and run it is like visiting a friend and the

moment he is able to sit down and be present to us we jump up and run out the door yelling, "It was so great to

spend time with you, see you next week!"

2. It's Not Nice to Be Rude:

My motivation to be on time should not be to avoid embarrassment but because I am going to see Jesus. But

why is it easy for us to leave early and come late when it is the Creator of the Universe who is hoping to see us?

3. Mass Is Not An Activity on a To-Do List:

The Christian life is not a to-do list. It is an invitation to be in relationship with God. If we are going to Mass to

avoid mortal sin, we are missing much. We are called to relationship, to holiness, to transformation.

4. The Final Blessing Is Important:

Blessings are precious. When a priest, who by his ordination is configured to Christ, gives his final blessing, we

are being blessed by God himself. If Jesus were standing ready to give us a blessing before we left Mass and

went back out into the world, wouldn't you wait for it?

5. You Get MORE Grace:

If we are rushing out of church after communion, chances are our disposition is not such that we are reverentially

aware of the amazing fact that we are consuming the body, blood, soul and divinity of God himself. It's heavy

stuff. And it deserves a disposition of great respect, if only because we all need all the grace we can get.

St.Vincent de Paul is an emergency source for food and short-term financial

help for parishioners and those living within the parish boundaries. Please

call 847-437-6208. Requests will be handled with care and confidentiality.

Ask yourself “Am I only giving from

my surplus wealth?” and then put your

gift in the Society of St. Vincent de

Paul poor box so that those who are

suffering will be able to know God’s

love and care.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us: “I want you to observe

that this poor widow contributed more than all the others

who donated to the treasury. They gave from their surplus

wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live

on.”

The Respect Life committee will be collecting

Christmas gifts for the children of the Women’s

Center again this year. The tree filled with gift

tags will be in the Gathering Space. Please take a

tag and buy a gift for a deserving child. Remember the un-

wrapped gift should be in a store bag only. Then attach the tag to

the bag. Be mindful of the weight of the gift as the moms have to

transport these gifts on the bus. Gifts must be returned to the

Giving Tree no later than Sunday, December 2nd.
