Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me. — Galatians 2:20

Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two

From the Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ, My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you who worked so diligently at last week's parish ba-zaar. Through your hard work you made the bazaar a great success. I would also like to thank you who took time out of you busy schedules to spend some time with us. It was wonderful to see so many of you here this past week. God's blessings on all of you! From this week's gospel: So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little." In today's gospel we hear of the encounter between Jesus and a woman who came to him with a broken heart. Her sinfulness was weighing heavily upon her and was crushing her spirit. But thank-fully she saw in Jesus a chance at being born again. Completely ignoring the jeers of the other people in the house she falls at the feet of Jesus and after washing Jesus' feet with her tears and drying them with her hair she anoints his feet with costly perfumed oil. She shows Jesus a great deal of love. Be-cause of her love Jesus takes away her sins and grants her a new beginning, a new chance at a life of virtue free from the guilt of her former sinfulness. Compare this to the reaction of the Pharisee who was self righteous. He suspects Jesus is a prophet and so he invite him to festive banquet. He shows Jesus little in the way of love and little is forgiven him. Just as the woman's love was the consequence of her forgiveness so to the little love of the Pharisee is the consequence of his being unforgiven. Some wonderful lessons can be understood from this scene in Jesus' life. The most im-portant, I think, is the lesson of the power of Jesus' forgiveness. No matter how bad we've been in life, no matter what evil we have done to ourselves or others, we can all be forgiven. The Lord's power is infinite and he desires that we be holy. The only obstacle to receiv-ing his pardon for our many sins is our stub-bornness and self-righteousness. But if we truly love him we'll know the seriousness of our sinful state and turn to him, like the woman, and receive his pardon. While we still draw breath not one of us is beyond re-demption if we but turn to Jesus in love and ask for his mercy. Let nothing and no one stand between you and the loving embrace of Our Savior.
