    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH ~ DECEMBER 27, 2020

As we get ready to see what awaits us in 2021, I’d like to take note of different events from 2020. With all the constant coverage of topics

related to COVID-19 and the presidential election, there’s no need to remind anyone about those. The other occurrences, except for the first two, have to do with the turmoil-ridden Middle East, including its impact on the West. In Moore, Oklahoma, Max Townsend, 57, drove his

pickup truck into a crowd of cross-country runners, killing two of them. This happened a week after his son, Cody, was killed in a car crash. It was a sad example of how our sufferings can derange us and spread our grief to other innocent people.

The Goya corporation, one of our nation’s largest minority-owned businesses (well known for its charities to the needy, including many in our Archdiocese), was made a boycott target after its CEO, Robert Unanue, visited the White House. Mr. Unanue noted that during the previous administration he had accepted an invitation to help promote Michelle Obama’s healthy-eating initiative.

Near Baghdad Airport, a U.S. drone strike took out Iranian Major Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp’s foreign activities, and Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, Iran’s top paramilitary commander in Iraq. This occurred soon after our embassy in Baghdad was invaded by a mob of attackers. Our government said that the two were planning to attack diplomats and servicemen throughout the region. More than 600 U.S. military have been killed by Shiite militias. Retired General David Petraeus, once our armed forces’ commander in the region, called Soleimani “a truly evil figure.”

As just one example of how terrible the violence in Afghanistan has been, in the capital city of Kabul terrorists killed 16 people, including 2 babies, at a maternity hospital. The government blamed the Taliban, which denied responsibility. The same day, adherents of Islamic State killed 24 people at a funeral.

Turkey’s highest administrative court declared that the famed and magnificent Hagia Sophia is

    (continued above)

to revert to being a mosque, a decision President Tayyip Erdogan immediately moved to implement. Haggia Sophia was built as a Christian church in the 6th century and later turned into a mosque by Faith Sultan Mehmet in 1453. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk made it a museum in 1934, as part of his efforts to modernize Turkey. Art scholars fear that the survival of its important and beautiful interior adornments is in doubt.

In October, Samuel Paty, an 8th grade teacher in France, was beheaded by Abdoullakh Abouyezidvitch, an 18-year-old Russian national of Chechen origin. The assailant was moved to kill Paty after the teacher held a classroom debate on free speech, at one point showing two cartoons that had been published by the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which the killer found insulting to the Prophet Muhammed. A parent of one of Paty’s students had posted the cartoons on social media, inflaming the assailant, who was later shot dead by police. Thousands of French citizens gathered in Paris to decry the attack.

Three French worshippers were knifed to death by a Tunisian immigrant as they attended Mass at Nice’s basilica of Notre-Dame. The murderer coupled his deed with the familiar terrorist exclamation, “Allahu Akbar.”

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “…as the Lord has forgiven you,

so you must forgive.” - Colossians 3:13 Forgiving is one of the hardest things for people to do. We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness first before we can give it to others. Go to the sacrament of Reconciliation and receive God’s mercy and forgiveness. Then, share the gift of forgiveness with someone – a family member, a friend or a co-worker. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.
