TASTETT OF THE WORLDWW ~ JULY 14TH ~ 12:00 - 4:

So – What’s in a Name?

Some weeks back Father O’Hara spoke about names. He made a point I had never really thought about. Our names: we had no choice, they were just given to us. My name was determined by Italian tradition. I

was to be named after both grandmothers: Mary and Ann. At least that was my mother’s story to my father. I don’t think he ever realized that my mother’s Mother’s full first name was Mary Ann!

I, on the other hand, regretted not being named after my mother. And so I chose my own Confirmation name, Mom’s name – Carol. Each of these three names has meaning for me: even the ones I did not choose. They name three women who loved me; whose lives helped to form my own.

A parish’s name is somewhat like that. We did not choose it, yet it is meant to have meaning for us. I’ve been stationed in a number of parishes. And in each one, more or less, I’ve thought about what each church’s patron could mean for my life.

In today’s gospel Jesus is called the carpenter. Jesus is identified, named by what he learned at Joseph’s side:. Joseph, who had no word of his own recorded in Scripture - sometimes called the “silent man” - and yet now known as Saint Joseph: Patron of the Universal Church, Patron of Fathers, unborn children, immigrants, workers, and of a happy death.

During this special year what will Joseph teach us? How can we become identified with him?

Soon, we will be able to take into our homes a special statue-our own “Traveling St. Joseph”. This Shrine will be a place for personal and family prayer; a place to grow closer to Joseph, to be by his side, to learn his meaning for our lives.

This weekend our Traveling St. Joseph will be presented at each of our Masses. During the rest of July it will rest in the Church’s “Meditation Corner” (on the right side of church). Visit this newest addition to our 100th celebration and “get acquainted”.

Soon there will be a Sign-Up book near the Shrine so you can volunteer to bring Traveling Joseph to your home for a week. Directions will be given during the rest of July for how and when this can take place with suggestions for family and personal prayer.

CENTENNIAL CENTENNIALENTENNNIAL

DOWN MEMORY LANE ~ A “Deer” Memory from Eleanor Slanga

As part of St. Joseph’s Centennial celebration, we are invited to write a brief recount of an experience or something that has stuck with us over the years. Well, here is my fond recollection. It was a beautifully crisp morning with the sun peeping through the stained glass windows when Jack and I arrived at the narthex. We were preparing things for Mass when Fr. Silveri arrived and said hello with his wonderful bright smile saying, “You know, I think this is going to be a very special day because it’s such a gorgeous morning.” People began arriving, Mass had not yet begun and, all of a sudden out of nowhere, a loud crash came through the door. The first thing one thinks of is a terrorist attack, maybe a bomb, maybe a truck veered off the road and slammed into the entrance of the narthex, maybe the building collapsed. Crazy things run through your head at lightning speed. We were all surprised and frightened at the same time and not knowing what we should do, we all scurried around the room chasing – chasing what? Lo and behold, it was a deer, yes a young deer – she came crashing through the window, glass flying all over the floor and she decided to just run rampantly around prancing and owning the room at that point. Fr. Silveri, in his calm manner, said to the deer, “Ok, Bambi, you can join us, but you have to sit in the back.” Coincidentally my cell phone rang, and Fr. Silveri said, “Ugh, that must be the bishop calling me again. Ok, I’ll take his call”. So Fr. Silveri then related this unprecedented event to the bishop; he was smiling and bouncing his head up and down saying “Yes, your excellency, yes your excellency. Thank you, your excellency.” until the call finally ended. Fr. Silveri then announced, “The bishop said the deer can stay for Mass, but he can not receive the Eucharist.” With the deer having left the narthex with the same gusto he entered, we all began sweeping up the broken glass, rearranging our seats, and finally calming down – somewhat, at least - for Mass. Fr. Silveri said, “Ok let’s go, let’s have mass now.” As he was giving the last blessing, he said, “I really felt that today would be very special – and it certainly was!”

Thank you Fr. Silveri for this beautiful memory!

They’re Back!!

The Paper Recycling Bins are back and located at the top of the parking lot beside the outfield of the baseball fields. Gold Medal Environmental is committed to regular removal and is very happy we are par-ticipating with them again. ATTENTION STUDENTS! Cleaning out your backpack? Don’t throw your books in the trash! Recycle them here! Textbooks, notebooks and any loose paper can be dropped off at the green “Paper Retriever” bins in the church parking lot. It’s an easy way for you to help raise money for St. Joseph and put another year behind you!
