Here are some recent non-fiction books that have appeared, beginning with histories:
∎ Jessie Child’s God’s Traitors (Oxford) is about the Vaux family, prominent English Catholics of the time of Elizabeth I who strongly upheld their Faith and supported the Jesuits in a dangerous time.
∎ Caroline Morehead’s Village of Secrets: Defying the Nazis in Vichy France (Harper).
∎ Tristram Hunt’s Cities of Empire (Metropolitan) surveys the history of ten cities that were the second leading ones in their empires, including Boston, Bombay, Hong Kong, Dublin, Cape Town and Melbourne.
∎ Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (Random House)tells of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic long distance runner who was shot down over the Pacific in 1943, then spent 47 days on a life raft and two terrible years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. After the war, he overcame alcoholism, nightmares and post-traumatic stress through a Christian conversion, something not portrayed in the 2014 film version of the book.
∎ Timothy W. Ryback’s Hitler’s First Victims (Knopf) focuses on Josef Hartinger, a Bavarian prosecutor who, early in the Hitler regime, courageously indicted Dachau SS guards for the murders of inmates falsely said to have died as suicides or men shot “while trying to escape.”
∎ Mark Greengrass’s Christendom Destroyed: Euorpe, 1517-1648 (Viking/Penguin), is a densely detailed survey of the combined pressures, especially on the Hapsburg Holy Roman Empire and the Papal states, imposed by the Protestant Reformation, the Ottoman Empire and the ambitions of France.
∎ Jenny Uglow’s In These Times (FSG) describes the effects of the Napoleonic wars on everyday life in interesting detail.
∎ Charles Spencer (Princess Diana’s brother) colorfully explores the lives of the 59 men who
signed the British king’s death warrant in 1649 in Killers of the King: The Men Who Dared to Execute Charles I (Bloomsbury).
∎ Erik Larsen’s Dead Wake (Crown) recounts the 1915 torpedoing of the passenger ship Lusitania by a German U-boat, with the loss of 1,198 lives, including those of 128 Americans, in an incident that led America into World War I.
∎ Steven Nightingale’s Granada (Counterpoint) tells of the Islamic influence on Spain, focusing on the “Jewel of Andalusia.”
∎ Michael Farquhar’s Bad Days in History (National Geographic) recounts a disaster for each day of the year, which may help put at least some of our own disappointments and reversals in a different perspective.

PRESERVE A LOVED ONE’S NAME WITH A PERSONALIZED PAVER
You can still reserve an engraved brick in your name or that of a loved one to be placed in front of any of the statues in our “Garden of Saints” or added to the Com-memorative Brick Path between the church and the grotto. The donation is $125 for each brick. Order forms are available in the parish office/rectory or in our church literature racks. Orders must be received by August 1 so that the bricks can be inscribed and inserted before the Fall.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED TO VISIT ORADELL HEALTH CARE CENTER
Fr. Andrew is looking for more Ministers of Holy Communion to join Saint Joseph’s Ministry to nursing home residents. If you are a mandated Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and are able
to volunteer some time one or two Sundays a month to take Communion (after the 9:00 am Sunday Mass) to the residents of Care One’s Oradell Health Care Center, please contact Fr. Andrew at 201-261-0148 or by email at [email protected] If you are interested but are not yet a Eucharistic Minister, please feel free to reach out to Father Andrew. He would be very happy to help you explore the possibility of serving in this very special ministry.
PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN & PORTUGAL —OCTOBER 12-21
Join Fr. Roy Regaspi on a 10-day pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the
birth of St. Teresa of Avila. In addition to visiting the medieval city of Avila, the church where St. Teresa had frequent visions and the convent that contains her relics, pilgrims will also spend time at Fatima and the Shrine of Our Lady where three local shepherd children saw the Virgin Mary. Departing from Newark, the pilgrimage will travel from Lisbon to Santarem and Fatima (and the Shrine of Fatima), to Alba de Tormes (the burial place of St. Teresa), to Salamanca (“the Golden City”) and Avila, then to Madrid (and the famous Prado Museum), El Escorial (built as King Philip I’s residence, which now serves as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school), and ending at Toledo (the ancient capital that so inspired the famous artist El Greco). Masses will be assigned on a first-come basis. No prior requests can be taken. Mass Intention requests will not be taken over the phone. We can only honor requests made in person and submitted on the Mass Intention Form. Please tear the Form (p. 5) out of the bulletin.
Bring the completed form to the parish office when you arrange for the Masses.
State the full name of the person for whom the Mass Intention is requested. Please print clearly. Mass Intention Donation is $10 per request.
Donation is payable at the time of request to: “Saint Joseph Church.”
For the first two weeks that the book is open, there is a maximum limit of 5 Masses per family. Please do not request all Mass Intentions to be scheduled for Sunday and Holy Days. Mass Intentions may be requested for Christmas OR Easter, but not both

INDEPENDENCE DAY PRAYER
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
We all know these words by heart. They are from the United States Declaration of Independence. However, are these words held with the same reverence around the world as they are held here at home? Sadly, no.
There are many places in the world where it is a life-threatening endeavor to practice one's faith, that faith that was given to each human by that Creator who endowed us with inalienable rights.
Let us take a moment to remember all those people in the world who are not free to seek life, liberty or happiness.
Let us pray... O God,
You willed that the Jewish people be free from slavery by their Egyptian captors. You will that all people should be free
to worship you without fear and to celebrate their religious beliefs
freely, even if they have not yet found you.
Grant that those of us who live in this great nation
will thank you daily for our freedom, and work for the freedom of others
around the world that do not yet have the freedom
to practice their faith openly and proudly.
We seek your wisdom where hatred abounds,
and ask for humility to offer our good works
to others who live in fear and bondage.
We ask all this through Christ our Lord, Who frees us from sin and death through the wood of the cross.

FROM THE ARCHBISHOP IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE SHOOTING
IN CHARLESTON, SC
The almost 1.5 million Catholics of the Archdiocese of Newark offer their sympathies and prayers for the victims of the Charleston attack and their families. All of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Newark will remember them in the General Intercessions at Mass in the days and weeks ahead, in the sure and certain hope that those who have died have received The Embrace of Our Heavenly Father.
… Security for the people who come to our churches is a priority. … I do call upon all of the pastors of the Newark Archdiocese to work with local law enforcement agencies to strengthen and implement appropriate protections in our parishes. However, we need to balance those concerns against the reality that churches, temples, and all houses of worship are places of welcome and of God’s love.
I remind the people of this local Church of Newark that now is a time for consolation, for brave thoughts, and for turning fear into love—both for those who have perished in Charleston, and for our neighbors here in New Jersey.

SAFETY AT SAINT JOSEPH In line with our ongoing effort to make Saint Joseph Parish buildings and grounds safe for all, Facilities Director Tom Meli had already begun upgrading general security measures on campus prior to this terrible tragedy. Additionally he has consulted with local law enforcement officials and is implementing their recommendations.
Saint Joseph Parish offers their deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and to the members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston and will continue to keep them in our prayers.
