Our Mission Statement

We, the parishioners of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish,

serve Southeast Washington County with a spirit of

welcome, compassion and charity.

We are a community rooted in the Eucharist

and nourished by the Sacraments.

We come together to joyfully celebrate our faith in

prayer and worship, respecting our spiritual diversity

and cultural heritage. We are sent forth from this

Eucharistic community, in response to the call of Jesus

our Savior, to reach out to youth, families, elderly, and

all those in need in our parish, communities and

beyond. In the pioneering spirit of our patroness, we

offer support through witness, prayer and good works,

and we embrace the challenges and opportunities of

what it means to be a Christian

in an ever-changing world.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 4

Dear Friends in Christ:

Throughout all four Gospels, we hear

how Jesus often uses very basic things in life

to teach profound spiritual truths. Such is the

case on this Third Sunday of Lent. From the

portion of Saint Matthew’s Gospel a life

changing encounter happens over water – a

most basic need for survival.

The thirst experienced by the woman at the well

is not just about water to drink, rather it is about the deepest longings of the human heart – thirsting

for God.

The conversion experience of the woman at the well gives us hope in the midst of our spiritual

journey not only through Lent but all through life. Jesus met her where she was and led her to where

she needed to be, calling her out of herself by raising her awareness to focus on satisfying the thirsts

of the human heart.

The lesson for our spiritual lives in this season of Lent through the conversion experience of

the woman at the well is that we, too need to return over and over again to Jesus – the fountain of

living water who is the one for whom our hearts thirst to be spiritually nourished.

What are the areas of your spiritual life that need to be refreshed and renewed in the fountain

of living water who is Christ Jesus? May all of us use the remaining days of this season of Lent to

examine our spiritual lives to see where we thirst and allow the Lord to refresh us and lead us to

where we need to be in deeper relationship with him.

“Lent is the autumn of the spiritual life

during which we gather fruit to keep us going

for the rest of the year.”

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 6

LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES

Lenten Regulations

The penitential season of Lent calls all of us to acts of repentance through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Since Lent retains its ancient penitential character, we are to make the entire Lenten season a period of

special observance through the three practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In order to help you explain

how this is conveyed through the law that has been handed on to the Church, below you will find an outline

of regulations regarding the Lenten season as outlined by the Diocese of Pittsburgh:

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of

abstinence in the United States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at age 14. The law of fasting (limiting

oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should

consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not

obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are

educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. All members of the Christian faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten

season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not

be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding

rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

Eucharistic Exposition/Adoration – Fridays of Lent – Bentleyville Main

Church

Each Friday during Lent, we are providing you an opportunity to participate

in Eucharistic Adoration as an increased time for prayer. The 9 AM Mass will

be held in the Bentleyville Main Church each Friday of Lent followed by all day

Eucharistic Adoration until Benediction at 6:15 PM. At least two people are

needed to cover all the hours throughout the day. You can sign-up for a 60

minute slot. Captains are also needed who are willing to be on call during the

day who can fill in for any absence. Sign-up sheets are available at the

Bentleyville Main Church side entrance. Come and adore the Lord and grow

closer to Jesus this Lenten season!

FAITH FORMATION & EVANGELIZATION

SACRAMENTAL PREP SESSIONS

Children in 2nd grade preparing for First Eucharist along with 7th and 8th graders preparing for Confirmation are to

attend the next prep sessions this Sunday, March 15th from 9:15 to 10:45 AM in Drexel Hall. Parent attendance is

required for all families with children preparing for both First Eucharist and Confirmation programs.

RCIA FIRST SCRUTINY AND RITE OF ELECTION

On Sunday, March 15th, at the 9:00 AM Mass at the Richeyville Mission Church, our

catechumens will celebrate the first of three Scrutinies which are part of the RCIA rituals during

the Lenten Season. The Scrutinies bring about self-searching and repentance, and above all,

have a spiritual purpose. They are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective or

sinful in the hearts of those preparing for Baptism as adults; then bring out and strengthen all that

is upright, strong and good in them. Later, at 2:30 PM, they will then celebrate the Rite of Election with Bishop Zubik,

at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. Through this rite, the Church makes its “election” of the catechumens to receive

the Sacraments of Initiation. In the presence of the bishop, their names are inscribed in the Book of the Elect at the

cathedral as a pledge of fidelity. Catechumens are then known as “the elect” or “the illuminandi”—“those who will be

enlightened”. Please keep our catechumens (soon to be Elect) Mike Zekir, Jr. and Tom Zekir in your prayers as they

continue preparation for the Easter Sacraments.

L.I.F.T. SESSION FOR LENT

At the March 1

st

family and intergenerational catechesis session of L.I.F.T. (Living In Faith Together), we centered on

the importance of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving for the Lenten Season. Children’s sessions also included Stations

of the Cross, decorating “Goodie Bags” which will be filled and distribute at our local nursing homes at Eastertime.

Adults also viewed a presentation by Deb Augustine on Lenten and Easter customs and family traditions, and there

was a sharing of many experiences participants had experienced within their own families, in order to find a way to

continue or “rekindle” these within their own homes. L.I.F.T. families will participate in a Lenten project, doing at least

one act of prayer, fasting or almsgiving as a family for each day remaining in Lent. All families were also given a Saint

Katharine Drexel prayer card as our “Saint of the Month”. Her feast was celebrated on March 3

rd

.

PRAYER TEAM MINISTRY

Our parish Prayer Team has increased its efforts to reach more of those in need of prayer in

our parish family and the greater community. At each weekend Mass, all greeters will

distribute prayer request forms, which can be completed and then handed directly to our

Prayer Team members after Mass, or placed in the prayer request box in the vestibule.

The collected prayers will then be offered as intentions among the team, and remembered

throughout the week. Each Prayer Team member will be clearly identified with a bright blue

badge. During the announcements prior to Mass, team members will stand to signify who will be leading and offering

prayer from the team. The team will continue to invite those in need of prayer to come forward after each Mass to pray

in person for you and for any special intentions. If you would like to contact our Prayer Team to request prayer or to

be part of the team please send an email to [email protected].

ARISE PITTSBURGH

Students in Grades 8-12, experience ARISE—a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ, unlike

any you’ve experienced before. Includes a performance by Unaltered, a dance party, an

opportunity for Confession and Eucharistic adoration. The heart of Unaltered is to “lead students to

fullness of life.” Freedom and fullness is not found in following any patterns and systems of this

world but by yielding your life to Jesus Christ, holding fast to his teaching and walking in His ways.

He is the way, the truth and the life! Within the context of the event, the focus is 1 Timothy 4:12

which states, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for

the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” The entire message of the event

speaks of how we are to be ‘in’ the world but not ‘of’ it and what are some distinguishing marks of

those who follow Jesus Christ. Held at Stage AE in Pittsburgh from 6:00-10:00 PM, Saturday,

March 28

th

. Cost is $10.00 / person in advance or $15.00 at the door. Parents who drive have

access to a special hospitality room while waiting during the event. Check out more about ARISE

PITTSBURGH at ARISEPGH.COM. For even more details on this event, contact Deb Augustine at

[email protected] or 724-209-1370 ext. 412. (The event is sponsored by the Diocese

of Pittsburgh).

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE 9

PARISH SHARE 2020

Annual Diocesan Parish Share Campaign for 2020

Our annual Parish Share Campaign began March 1

st

for the current 2020 calendar year. The Parish Share Program

supports the needs of older adults and the less fortunate: Catholic Charities, Roselia Center and Mon Valley Social Services

are among the many social programs that receive support through Parish Share. In addition, your contribution provides a

vital role in helping more than 85,000 young Catholics receive a firm grounding in their faith through parish based religious

education programs as well as through campus and youth ministry, helping to bolster the spiritual development of young

adult Catholics. Supporting Parish Share promotes new vocations to the priesthood and religious life, provides for the

continuing spiritual and educational formation of our current diocesan priests, and the care of retired priests who have given

their lives in service to us. Parish Share also helps in educating parishioners on pro-life issues, counseling women and

teenagers in crisis, and reaching out to women and men suffering from the trauma of abortion. In all, Parish Share helps

parishes achieve things they cannot do on their own. Your contribution helps to provide our parishes with property planning

and insurance expertise, legal and judicial counsel, stewardship and development services, financial and auditing services

that allow the parish to serve you better.

The assessment as issued by the Diocese of Pittsburgh for Saint Katharine Drexel Parish in 2020 is $83,086.00.

Our Parish Share assessment for the parish continues to increase as does the cost of living. This year, each household

is asked to please consider a pledge of $350.00 to the Parish Share Program for 2020 that can be payable over the course

of the year ($100.00 as the initial gift plus a monthly gift of $25.00 over the next ten months). You are asked to be as

generous as you are able according to your means.

For the 2020 Parish Share Campaign contribution, plan to use the bright pink colored envelope in your monthly offertory

envelope packet, or you may place your gift in an envelope and drop it in the regular collection at weekend Masses the

churches where you participate in Mass. You may also send it via U.S. mail in care of the administration center office, or you

may drop it off at the parish office during regular business hours. May God abundantly bless you for your generosity!

Palm Sunday – Service of

Tenebrae – 6:30 PM –

Bentleyville

On Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020

at 6:30 PM in the Bentleyville Main

Church we will gather for

Tenebrae. The service called

Tenebrae (or ‘darkness,’ the

‘shadows’) used to be part of the

Liturgy of the Hours or ‘Divine

Office.’ The service includes music

and Sacred Scripture along with

the gradual extinguishing of

candles and other lights in the

church until only one single

candle, considered a symbol of the

Lord, remains. This beautiful

prayer service invites your

participation and quiet meditation.

The music and texts are to speak

symbolically of our lives identified

in the death and resurrection of

Christ. Come and join us for this

beautiful service of God’s Word

and music!

Parking – Please Comply

Please park vehicles using the

designated parking spaces in the

parking lots of both our parish

campuses. Complaints have

reached the parish office where

people coming to our churches are

making up their own parking

patterns. It is necessary to park in

the designated parking spaces. If

there should be any kind of

emergency and responders are

unable to have proper access to

our campuses - you will be subject

to fines. Please cooperate by

parking in the appropriate parking

spaces. Thank you!
