Pentecost Sunday

May 20, 2018

Solemnity of Pentecost

“Veni, Creator Spiritus, Mentes tuorum visita, Imple superna gratia, Quae tu creasti pectora.

Creator Spirit, Lord of grace, Come make in us your dwelling place. O purest Light, in darkness.”

So we sing, on this Pentecost Day, “Come, Holy Ghost, and in us take up thy rest.” But we know, as

baptized and confirmed children of God, there is no rest for those who claim Christ as our Savior! Amen? It’s

ALWAYS Go Time and Game On as His disciples. No longer allowed to sit on the sidelines of our catholic faith,

we are to teach and heal, preach and guide, listen and learn, love and bring love to the entire world as the Great

Commission was given to us.

The relay, so to speak, took place last week as we celebrated The Ascension of the Lord, when the Lord

passed the baton to His disciples and to Us – to take up His mission and to carry His Words and Ways to the

entire world by our words and actions, attitudes and deeds. And today, as the disciples are gathered in the Up-

per Room, the Spirit filled them WITH the power and presence of God to BECOME disciples of His Word and

Way. Baptized by FIRE and the HOLY SPIRIT, the Scriptures record that the Holy Spirit “came to rest on each

one of them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit en-

abled them to proclaim.”

Part and parcel of our mission to live and love and proclaim the Good News is to be of service and sac-

rifice for others. This weekend’s FOLLOW UP CATHOLIC CHARI-

TIES APPEAL is yet another way to extend our mission to be His ser-

vants in the world as we offer our treasure and prayer for the specific

Opioid Crisis. As the recent bulletin article called our attention to the

reality of that Crisis here in Cleveland, Bishop Perez has asked each

one of us to consider either a new pledge at this time or an increase

in our current pledge to support this endeavor. It’s a good thing to BE CATHOLIC

and it’s a great way to show our commitment to CARE FOR OTHERS -

#YourMercy. Envelopes are IN THE PEWS for your SUPPORT today.

AGAIN, Congratulations to our Confirmand who celebrated the gifts and

fruits of the Spirit last Saturday with Abbot Gary Hoover, OSB. Abbot highlighted

for our Confirmand the need to call on the Lord at all times and to invite Him into

our lives and the lives of our hurting brothers and sisters. Good words to live by!

Congratulations Confirmand!

THANKS to you all for your generous SUPPORT in the Sunday Collection and Roof Project! Blessings!

Father John

“Jesus Loves Us”

I think that this is something, that we must

live life beautifully, we have Jesus with us

and He lives us. If we could only remem-

ber that God loves us, and we have an

opportunity to love others as He loves us,

not in big things, but in small things with great love…..

heart. No prior knowledge of scripture is necessary.

Catholic Charities

This weekend, we will participate in an important Fol-

low-Up Parish Appeal for Catholic Charities. This is not

a special collection; rather it is a chance for all Catholics

to make a commitment to transform lives and communi-

ties by sharing with others the gifts which God as given

you. Funds raised through this effort will be used to

expand treatment and prevention services to fight the

opioid crisis that has a grip on our families, friends and

communities. In 2017, nearly 1,200 people in our dio-

cese died of drug overdoses. With your help, Catholic

Charities will be able to expand their reach into every

county and provide help and hope to those suffering

from addiction.

Double You Impact: All new, increased and additional

gifts returned in the In-Pew envelopes this weekend or

donated online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/

Challenge will be matched up to $100,000.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

THE GREAT SEND OFF

What a year! I cannot believe that we are already at the end

of the Easter celebrations, school year, and choir season!

Lots of fantastic music has been made and friendships have

been made: I am so pleased with how everything went!

Thank you to all music ministry members who have been so

dedicated to the song of our faith community! While we will

not be meeting for rehearsals, everyone is still welcome to

celebrate mass up in the loft with me! I will also be accept-

ing prelude auditions and requests from EVERYONE, music

ministry or from the general community! Let your musical

voice be heard this summer, and maybe consider joining us

for next year!

It’s our last week of singing our Song of Praise for the

Easter season! Here are the lyrics.

We worship and adore You, Bowing down before You.

Songs of praises singing, Hallelujahs ringing.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, Amen.

Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth

Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are wel-

come to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer

is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our

ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested

in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing

an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass

up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for

more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Family Perspective

The Apostles didn’t recognize Jesus until they saw his

wounds. Don’t look for God’s presence only in the joy-

ful moments of family life. Expect to find God in the

evening of the day, when you are exhausted and cranky

or when you are most aware of our family’s failures and

shortcomings. Today’s gospel reminds us that the

wounded Christ is standing among us through the Holy

Spirit, urging us to forgive and offering us peace.

one involved for a very successful year in our Faith Journey!

There may be some BIG changes next year. Stay tuned to this

column for more information. Have a GREAT Summer!

dent Evaluation Reports. These reports will be emailed to our

Parents during the month of June.

were sent home with students. Open enrollment forms are avail-

able on the parish website:

Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul

Mr. Andrew J. Carner, Principal

Earlier this month, students in grades Kdg. through Eighth

participated in St. Mary’s Annual Right-to-Read Week. We

began by having each classroom decorate their classroom door

with a chosen disciple. May 3rd was National Day of Prayer.

We began our day outside surrounding our statue of Mary. As

a school community we prayed and then raised the American

flag and all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. On May 4th stu-

dents in grades 5-8 attended the Center for Pastoral Leadership

in Wickliffe. Students were provided a tour of the facility and

ended the day with a Christian rapper concert. On May 7th, as

a school, students entered the school gym for a prayer service.

On May 8th students had the opportunity to participate in an

age appropriate version of Spiritual Trivial Pursuit. Students

broke down into teams during classroom religion time and

questioned each other on their Catholicity knowledge. On

May 9th students in grades Kdg. through fourth attended a

field trip to Our Lady of Lourdes in Euclid. Students received

a tour of the chapel, heard the story of the grotto, and a shrine

tour by the nuns. On May 10th the student body was visited

by Rabbi Eric Lakatos and received a lesson on Jewish beliefs

and customs. We finished the week on May 11th with our

own version of a Mini-Fest. Students wore their Faith Family

t-shirt they created during a recent Friday Fr. Marty /

Stewardship Dress Down Day. They got to dance to Christian

music and enjoy snacks. Everyone involved had a wonderful

week. Throughout the entire week, all students took 20 min-

utes each day to read and reflect on the Bible. A very special

thank you to Mrs. Merri Jo Meehan for coordinating such an

educational and fun-filled week for the students.

Would you like to help legally admitted refugees who have

come through the federal Refugees Admissions Program resettle

here? Our parish would like to start a group to do just that.

Partnering with Cleveland Catholic Charities’ Migration and

Refugee Services, our group would assist these refugees who

have fled their home countries in fear of persecution because of

their ethnicity, nationality, social group, religious affiliation or

political beliefs to establish their life in the Cleveland area.

As a group, we would decide what type of assistance we would

like to give. This can range from simply collecting furniture for

a refugee family’s new home to mentoring family and helping

them adjust to life in the U.S. If you would be interested in

joining the group, please contact Alane Mastandrea at (440)625
